Screening of Elevated Blood Pressure in Patients Attending Endodontic Clinics: A Cross-sectional Study Adil Othman Abdullah, Hezah Saadi Hassan, Shaima Othman Muhammad, Seyyedeh Shima Hakimi Manesh, Sara Kawa Muhamadamin, et al. Polytechnic Journal, 2025 One of the most important cardiovascular conditions that account for the highest mortality rate around the world is Hypertension. It is defined as a condition where systolic and diastolic blood pressure values are ≥ 140 mmHg and ≥ 90 mmHg, respectively, or a use of antihypertensive drug is being made. TThis study aims to identify and report the prevalence of elevated blood pressure levels among patients attending an endodontics clinic. The study was conducted among a group of 100 patients who sought endodontic treatment at university hospital, endodontics department. The collected information included blood pressure measurement and answers to a structured interview about their health and medication history. The collected data showed that The collected data showed that among the 100 patients screened, 10% exhibited elevated blood pressure. Of these, 1% were previously undiagnosed, 9% reported a history of hypertension, and only 2% were on antihypertensive medication. Male patients showed statistically higher mean systolic blood pressure compared to females (p = 0.148), and a significant gender difference was noted in age and occupation variables (p < 0.05). Based on this data, only 10% of patients attending the endodontics clinic exhibited elevated blood pressure, with no statistically significant difference between genders (p = 0.148). The reality of unnoticed hypertension highlights the need for consistent blood pressure checks within dental practices for better detection and treatment in due time.
Surface Modifications of Zirconia Dental Implant for Improving Osseointegration: A Literature Review Adil O. Abdullah, Saya Hadi Raouf Zanco Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences, 2024 The aim of the current review is focused on compiling a comprehensive overview of the zirconia surface modification for implant interface osseointegration. Background: The importance of osseointegration for patients has notably gained importance and been accompanied by a dramatic increase in the number of relevant products and procedures over several decades, with a concomitant rise in publications on this topic. An electronic search was conducted across Ovid Medline, complemented by a manual search across individual databases, such as Cochrane, Web of Science databases, and Google Scholar for the purpose of literature analysis on the mentioned topic. The studies were reviewed and compared. This article summarizes the current scientific and clinical opinions through a brief review with regards to the preferred way of zirconia surface treatment and its impact on osseointegration. There are controversies in terms of performing zirconia surface treatment. Surface bio-inertness of zirconia implants result in limited osseointegration compared to titanium implants.

Assessing the Impact of Varied Dark Chocolate Concentrations on Enamel and Dentine Microhardness Niaz Hamaghareeb Hamasaeed, Intesar Saadallah Toma, Adil Othman Abdullah, Shakhawan Kadir Kadir Applied Sciences Switzerland, 2024 (1) Background: The objective of the current investigation was to determine how different dark chocolate concentrations impacted the enamel and dentine microhardness. (2) Methods: Twenty noncarious premolar teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons were used in this study. Each tooth was divided mesiodistally to obtain 40 specimens of enamel and dentine 4 × 4 mm. Initial and final assessments of the surface microhardness of the enamel and dentine were created using a Digital Micro Vickers Hardness Tester (Laryee, Beijing, China) under (0.24 N load for 15 s). Four random groups (n = 10) were created: G1 (control, immersed in artificial saliva), G2 (70%), G3 (85%), and G4 (100% dark chocolate). Each sample underwent four cycles of 60-s immersion in suggested concentrations, followed by 30 min in artificial saliva. The attained values underwent statistical analysis employing SPSS version 26, with the utilization of T-tests and ANOVA. (3) Results: The results revealed a significant, incremental increase in the average microhardness values for enamel, specifically 61.72 ± 22.729, 64.17 ± 23.397, and 109.15 ± 34.625, and for dentin from 57.91 ± 8.332 to 72.29 ± 2.752 and ultimately reaching 88.67 ± 8.602, corresponding to the escalating concentrations of dark chocolate (70%, 85%, and 100%) (p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: Immersing the specimens in different concentrations of dark chocolate had a significant positive impact on the microhardness of both enamel and dentine.
Validity of nolla's method for age estimation for children in Kurdish Iraqi population-A retrospective study BushraR Noaman, AdilO Abdullah Indian Journal of Dental Research, 2022 Context: Radiographs have an essential role in Chronological Age (CA) estimation and are being used for dental age (DA) determination. Aims: Detecting the validity of Nolla's method (NM) for the age assessment of Kurdish Iraqi children (KIC). Methods and Material: A retrospective study was performed using orthopantomographs (OPGs) of 354 subjects aged from 4 to 13 years (178 boys and 176 girls) and their recording files. Subjects were divided into nine study groups: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 years old. The chronological age (CA) was subtracted from the DA to find the validity of NM; the positive results indicated the overestimation of age, whereas the negative results indicated for underestimation. The data were recorded through a digitalised system using Microsoft Excel worksheet and analysed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 25) programme using the dependent T-test and graphical analysis. The level of P value used in this study was set at < 0.05. Results: The DA is underestimated in ages 9 to 13 in boys and girls. The highest difference in DA–CA was at the age of 9 years (−0.146 ± 0.162). Conclusions: NM for age estimation was slightly overestimated in age groups of 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 years in boys and girls without statistically significant differences. However, this method underestimated the ages of KIC ranging from 9 to 13 years significantly.
Gastrodin alleviates bone damage by modulating protein expression and tissue redox state Bowen Zheng, Chunling Shi, Fenik K. Muhammed, Jia He, Adil O. Abdullah, Yi Liu FEBS Open Bio, 2020 Fluorosis is a common disease characterized by disruptions in bone metabolism and enamel development. The production of reactive oxygen species is thought to play an important role in fluorosis. Gastrodin (4‐hydroxybenzylalcohol4‐O‐beta‐D‐glucopyranoside) has been reported to have antioxidative activity, and so here we examined whether gastrodin has protective effects against oxidative stress and bone tissue toxicity in rats with fluorosis. Wistar rats were given different doses of gastrodin 1 month after fluoride administration, and samples of blood, bone and teeth were collected after 2, 3 and 4 months; glutathione peroxidase glu, CAT and SOD levels in the fluorosis group were lower than those in the control group. Gastrodin treatment in rats ameliorated oxidative stress and fluoride accumulation that were induced by fluoride; treatment with 400 mg·kg−1 gastrodin protected trabecular bone structure and reduced femur and alveolar bone injury in rats with fluorosis. Enhanced expression of cysteinyl aspartate‐specific proteinase (caspase) 3, caspase‐9 and Bax and decreased expression of Bcl‐2 induced by fluoride were also reversed by gastrodin. In summary, the present data suggest that gastrodin, and in particular a dose of 400 mg·kg−1, can improve the antioxidative capacity of rats, reduce concentration of fluoride in tissues, alleviate bone damage and modulate expression of Bcl‐2, Bax, caspase‐3 and caspase‐9.
A morphometric study of the sella turcica: Race, age, and gender effect F. K. Muhammed, A. O. Abdullah, Y. Liu Folia Morphologica Poland, 2020 BACKGROUND This study aims to evaluate the morphological appearance, bridging incidence, and linear dimensions of sella turcica (ST) in Chinese and Nepalese individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study examined digital standardized lateral cephalometric of 360 Chinese and Nepalese subjects, which consisted of 116 females and 64 males with an age range of 8-28 years. The sella morphology, bridging, and size were assessed on the lateral cephalometric radiographs, and the data were correlated with race, gender, and age. RESULTS ST presented a normal morphology in most Nepalese (90%) subjects, whereas flat-shaped morphology was highly prevalent among Chinese subjects (36.7%). The frequency of full bridging was 2.8% and 11.7% for Chinese and Nepalese subjects, respectively. When the race was compared with sella size, a statistically significant difference was detected in length (p ˂ 0.05) and diameter (p ˂ 0.001) of ST. A significant correlation was found between the length and diameter of the ST and age in Chinese and Nepalese subjects. No significant association was observed between the size of ST and gender of Chinese and Nepalese subjects. The only parameter significantly associated with race, age, and gender was the diameter of ST. CONCLUSIONS These findings assist orthodontists, neurosurgeons, and forensic medical investigators to focus on the diameter of ST during orthodontic treatment planning, diagnosis of pathology of the pituitary gland, and age determination.
Association of congenital missing of maxillary lateral incisors with cervical vertebral body fusions and/or atlas posterior arch deficiency Bo-wen Zheng, Yan-na Chen, Fenik Kaml Muhammed, Adil O. Abdullah, Yi Liu Journal of Dental Sciences, 2020 To evaluate the association between congenital missing of maxillary lateral incisor (MLI) with cervical vertebral body fusions, posterior arch deficiency, and both anomalies. A total of 64 subjects (24 males and 40 females; mean age 16 ± 4.5 years) were detected to have congenital missing of MLI and selected as a study group. Two hundred and fifty-six subjects (87 males and 169 females, mean age 18.1 ± 3.2 years) were assigned to the control group. In the congenital absence of MLI, 53.7% revealed cervical column body fusion, 11.1% indicated a posterior arch deficiency, and 9.3% showed cervical column body fusion with posterior arch deficiency. Morphological deviations of the cervical column showed significant associations with congenital absence of MLI compared to control group ( p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in gender among the study and control groups (p > 0.05). Subjects with congenial MLI tend to have an increased frequency of cervical anomaly.
