Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) face significant challenges in achieving efficient video encoding, strict resource optimization, and reliable high-quality transmission under severe constraints. Existing simulation tools are often limited in functionality and fail to accurately model the complex environmental factors such as vegetation density and atmospheric conditions, that critically affect wireless video performance. To bridge this gap, this paper introduces Vid-Sim , a comprehensive video encoding and transmission simulation tool for WMSNs. Vid-Sim integrates two key innovations: (i) an enhanced Region of Interest (ROI)-based compression strategy that enables intelligent and adaptive prioritization of critical video regions, and (ii) a high-fidelity environmental data loss model that realistically captures channel impairments and propagation effects. Together, these contributions establish Vid-Sim as a powerful, accessible, and flexible platform for performance evaluation, encoding optimization, and the robust design and deployment of WMSNs in challenging environments. - An energy-efficient IoMT three-tier architecture for continuous monitoring of endangered bird species

Pervasive and Mobile Computing, 2025
The alarming decline in animal populations, particularly birds, due to environmental degradation necessitates close monitoring of endangered migratory waterbirds in their natural habitats. This can be accomplished through the continuous capture and transmission for population estimation, habitat analysis, and various relevant studies. This paper introduces a three-tier IoMT (Internet of Multimedia Things) deployed along the Edge-Cloud continuum for automated bird monitoring systems aimed at safeguarding endangered waterbird populations. At the edge level, Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN) are used to periodically capture and transmit images to a central collection station (fog level). Challenges such as limited bandwidth and power in Low-Power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) are addressed through local audio identification of endangered birds calls, which activates cameras only for target birds. This significantly reduces data transmission and conserves energy. To tackle ambient noise issues in audio recognition, especially in complex environments such as wetlands, an appropriate noise reduction technique is employed to augment our automatic bird call recognition system. This paper details an energy-efficient approach addressing LLNs’ challenges and incorporates robust noise reduction techniques to improve local audio recognition. The research includes a thorough analysis of potential technical solutions prior to implementation, establishing a critical phase in the system development. - EcoWatch: Region of interest-based multi-quantization resource-efficient framework for migratory bird surveillance using wireless sensor networks and environmental context awareness

Network Digital Twins (NDTs) aim to provide high-fidelity virtual representations of networks, replicating their architecture, components, and real-time dynamics. They enable organizations to analyze, optimize, and predict network performance and behavior under diverse scenarios. As telecommunication networks become increasingly complex – driven by advancements such as edge computing, 5G/6G, and software-defined networking – the need for advanced data analytics techniques like Deep Learning (DL) becomes more pressing. Despite their accuracy and efficiency, DL-based NDTs face limited adoption due to their lack of explainability. To address this challenge, our study builds on previous work that proposed a Graph Neural Network (GNN)-based NDT model by integrating an eXplainable AI (XAI) framework to enhance its interpretability. Our findings reveal the key input-output features that most influence the GNN-based NDT model’s predictions, providing deeper insights into its decision-making process. Additionally, we present practical recommendations for improving network operations, with a particular emphasis on sustainability. - A digital twin-based energy-efficient wireless multimedia sensor network for waterbirds monitoring

Future Generation Computer Systems, 2024
Wetlands play a critical role in maintaining the global climate, regulating the hydrological cycle, and protecting human health. However, they are rapidly disappearing due to human activities. Waterbirds are valuable bio-indicators of wetland health, but it is challenging to monitor them effectively. Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) offer a promising technology for monitoring wetlands. Nonetheless, these networks are constrained in terms of energy, and also encounter challenges associated with large-scale deployments under natural environmental conditions. These conditions introduce harsh circumstances that may not have been anticipated during the pre-deployment testing phase. This paper proposes a Digital Twin (DT) based energy-efficient WMSN monitoring system specifically tailored for waterbirds in wetlands. The system utilizes a unique approach that combines local audio identification and image compression with DT technology to optimize network performance and minimize energy consumption. To reduce unnecessary image transmissions, the system employs a real-time, low-complexity local audio identification phase before triggering image capture. A denoising step is employed to achieve highly accurate bird recognition despite surrounding noises. Each image undergoes a low-complexity compression scheme prior to transmission, further enhancing energy efficiency. To enhance the system’s overall efficiency and effectiveness, DT technology is integrated to create real-time replicas of the WMSN and the monitoring application. A synergistic interaction between the two DTs enables cooperative data-making decision that ensures both QoS (Quality of Service) and QoE (Quality of Experience) requirements are met. Transmission rate control is done using a fuzzy logic decision-making technique. Real-time feedback provides rapid and accurate analysis of the current state of the WMSN, allowing for dynamic adjustments. The ”what-if scenarios” feature of the implemented DTs has been effectively leveraged to find the most suitable settings for the controller. The effectiveness and performance enhancements achieved by integrating DT into our WMSN-based surveillance system are validated through comprehensive experiments in scenarios that correspond to a real-world wetland. Comparative analyses demonstrate the undeniable benefits of the DT-integrated system compared to a conventional WMSN-based surveillance setup. In particular, the results demonstrate the system’s superior performance in terms of energy efficiency, real-time monitoring capabilities, and ability to handle multiple video sources. - Survey on digital twins for natural environments: A communication network perspective

This paper presents an application of a Region of Interest(ROI)-based compression technique designed to enhance the energy efficiency of visual sensor networks used in wildlife monitoring. By focusing on compressing only the most critical regions within each video frame, the proposed method significantly reduces data volume, leading to substantial energy savings during both compression and transmission stages. The integration of LoRaWAN technology further optimizes energy consumption by providing low-power, long-range communication capabilities. Experimental results demonstrate a compression ratio of 4:1, achieving overall energy savings of approximately 38% for short-range and 40% for long-range transmission compared to traditional non-ROI methods. Despite a slight reduction in image quality, the visual integrity remains acceptable for effective wildlife monitoring, and the method improves transmission success rates over varying distances. These findings highlight the potential of ROI-based compression to extend the operational lifespan of sensor nodes, offering a viable and sustainable solution for long-term environmental monitoring. - Constructing a Network Digital Twin through formal modeling: Tackling the virtual–real mapping challenge in IIoT networks

Purpose This paper aims to offer a comprehensive examination of the various solutions currently accessible for addressing the challenge of semantic interoperability in cyber physical systems (CPS). CPS is a new generation of systems composed of physical assets with computation capabilities, connected with software systems in a network, exchanging data collected from the physical asset, models (physics-based, data-driven, . . .) and services (reconfiguration, monitoring, . . .). The physical asset and its software system are connected, and they exchange data to be interpreted in a certain context. The heterogeneous nature of the collected data together with different types of models rise interoperability problems. Modeling the digital space of the CPS and integrating information models that support cyber physical interoperability together are required. Design/methodology/approach This paper aims to identify the most relevant points in the development of semantic models and machine learning solutions to the interoperability problem, and how these solutions are implemented in CPS. The research analyzes recent papers related to the topic of semantic interoperability in Industry 4.0 (I4.0) systems. Findings Semantic models are key enabler technologies that provide a common understanding of data, and they can be used to solve interoperability problems in Industry by using a common vocabulary when defining these models. Originality/value This paper provides an overview of the different available solutions to the semantic interoperability problem in CPS. - An Advanced Assessment of Decentralized TSCH Schedulers: Unraveling the Implications of Heterogeneous Traffic Scenarios on Performance Efficacy
