Dr. M Senthil Kumar has completed his PhD in the area of materials characterization at Anna University, Chennai 2015. He has worked with materials alumina, cenosphere, hollow glass microsphere, silica, zirconia, ceria and titania. His current research interests focus on synthesis and characterization of composites and thin films. He has published 65 articles in national, International journals.

Mangalaraja, and Digest Journal of Nanomaterials and Biostructures, 2024 TiO2 a wide bandgap material has a great potential for use in semiconductor industry due to its better electronic properties combined with low cost, chemical stabilioty and nontoxicity. Further metal doping is found to modify the conductivity, electrical, and optical characteristics. In this research, deposition of Sn-doped TiO2 was carriedout using the spray pyrolysis technique. The electrical properties were obtained by using the Hall effect technique and structural properties of the film were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and EDAX Scanning electron microscopy. The result of X-ray diffraction showed that the thin film deposited by spray pyrolysis is polycrystalline with preferential orientation in the direction of (002) fields. SEM analysis exhibited membrane structure for the thin film deposited by spray pyrolysis. The results of electrical conductivity were obtained by using the Hall effect technique.

SENTHIL KUMAR Surface Review and Letters, 2024 The current scenario focuses on lightweight and better energy-absorbing structural materials for critical engineering applications in aerospace, automobiles, marine, electronic, and implant materials for biomedical industries. The magnesium-based syntactic foams are the preferred choice of material in the same category due to their lightweight, higher plateau strength, better damping characteristics, and excellent energy absorption behavior. Many works were reported based on the polymer and aluminum-based syntactic foams and their developments. However, the rapidly increasing interest in magnesium-based syntactic foams and the adoption of the applications are still at a nascent stage. This proposed review work comprehensively insights the magnesium-based syntactic foam; various hollow filler material usages and summarizes the influence of physical and mechanical behavior on processing routes and future research opportunities for applications.

Enhanced energy absorption and microstructural studies on hollow glass microsphere filled closed cell aluminum matrix syntactic foam Raja Thiyagarajan, M Senthil Kumar Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part C Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2023 The research on lightweight materials for advanced engineering applications attracted the development of metal matrix syntactic foams. The automobile sector has started using Al-based alloys in structural components such as crash-box, underride-guard, fenders, dampers, A, B, and C Pillars. The present study explores the energy absorption behavior; microstructural characterization such as SEM, EDS, and XRD analysis of hollow glass microsphere (HGM) filled aluminum matrix syntactic foam. A380 aluminum alloy reinforced with different volume fractions 10%, 20%, 30%, and 35% of hollow glass microspheres were used in the fabrication of syntactic foam using the stir casting technique. The quasi-static compression test conducted, evaluated the plateau strength, which improved from 284.14 to 341.69 MPa, and energy absorption capacity was observed in the range 139.25–187.92 MJ/m3. The plateau strength and energy absorption capacity were improved by 16.82% and 25.89% for the 35 vol.% HGM sample as compared with 10 vol.% HGM filled aluminum matrix syntactic foam. The addition of a calcium thickening agent in the casting process improved the bonding between aluminum and HGM particle and also the homogeneous distribution of HGM. The XRD analysis revealed the chemical reaction that occurred between aluminum and SiO2 that produced the AlSiO2 and Al2SiO5 interfacial compounds. This reaction tends to collapse the HGM cell wall and fills it with matrix material.
Performance evaluation of artificial neural networks for a fish oil biodiesel fueled diesel engine: Paying a pathway to sustainable energy in environmental progress Jakkamputi Lakshmipathi, Marikannan Senthilkumar, Rakkiyanan Jegadeeshwaran, Gnanasekaran Sakthivel, Kotha Gangadhar, Thangavelu Kannan Environmental Progress and Sustainable Energy, 2023 The purpose of this study is to develop a neural networks model to predict the performance monitoring of the compression ignition engine at various injection timings (21°, 24°, 27°bTDC) using fish oil biodiesel thereby increasing the sustainability of the biodiesel and leading to greener environment. The influence of the injection timing on the engine performance, emission, and combustion are observed in a four‐stroke single cylinder, constant speed, direct injection with a rated output of 4.4 kW using fish oil biodiesel blended with diesel. Feed forward back propagation, Elman feed forward, and Cascade back propagation neural networks‐based models are created to predict the parameters like ignition delay, maximum rate of pressure rise, combustion duration, smoke, hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, brake thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, and exhaust gas temperature. Scaled conjugate gradient and Levenberg–Marquardt have been used as training functions. The predictive capability of the models is compared with each other. It is observed that Elman feed forward with trainlm is the best model with the correlation coefficient is 0.9–1 and low root mean square error. The developed artificial neural network (ANN) predicts the engine parameters with the acceptable correlation limits and proves the efficiency and precision of the model which significantly reduces the time consumption and cost incurred in real time application. Hence by using limited experimental investigations the more accurate engine performance and emissions can be determined for wider engine operating conditions using Elman feed forward ANN.
Compressive deformation behavior of closed-cell aluminium syntactic foam Raja Thiyagarajan, G Sakthivel, R Jegadeeshwaran, J Lakshmipathi, M Senthil Kumar Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2023 The present study investigates the compressive deformation behaviour of aluminium matrix syntactic foam. Thecenosphere hollow filler was incorporated into the aluminium matrix to fabricate the syntactic foam using stir casting technique. A compressive test was conducted on the syntactic foam to evaluate their mechanical properties, and the results were compared with the finite element ABAQUS explicit simulation software. The plateau strength and energy absorption capacities of the experimental and numerical results show a deviation of 1.76 and 7.13% respectively. The numerical results are good, in agreement with the obtained experimental results, and beneficial in understanding the compressive behaviour of closed-cell syntactic foam.
