An empirical method to identify breaking waves Mauricio Felga Gobbi Revista Brasileira De Recursos Hidricos, 2025 In this paper we propose a method to identify breaking waves in shallow water. The method takes the local surface elevation time series and creates a new time series computed from the local energy spectrum using the wavelet transform of the input signal which quantifies the frequencies typically present in breaking waves. A laboratory experiment in a random wave flume was conducted and used to test the method in three positions along the tank, where: (a) no waves were breaking; (b) about 30% of the waves were breaking; (c) and nearly all waves were breaking. The method was statistically tested for its ability to correctly identify breaking waves, using the fact that all waves passing the gauge locations along the shoaling process were visually identified and marked as breaking or nonbreaking. The method proved itself accurate for most cases, and only misses when waves are on the verge of breaking.

Prevedello, Nelson Luís Dias Revista Brasileira De Meteorologia, 2019 Resumo Este trabalho implementa um modelo de transferência entre superfície-vegetação-atmosfera para estimar os fluxos de calor sensível e latente, entre outras variáveis, em culturas agrícolas e outras coberturas vegetais. Foram feitas duas implementações distintas para o de resposta estomática das plantas. Estas implementações foram comparadas entre si e com medições de fluxo de calor latente e sensível em uma plantação de soja. Os resultados mostram o impacto das implementações de resposta estomática nos fluxos de calor latente e sensível, e que o modelo possui potencial de aplicações do modelo para previsões operacionais ou para simular cenários de modificações no uso do solo e possíveis mudanças climáticas decorrentes.
Simulation of wind over a relatively complex topography: Application to the Askervein Hill Maurício Felga Gobbi, Roger Paul Dorweiler Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering, 2012 In this paper we investigate the flow of wind over a relatively complex topography at the lower portion of the atmospheric boundary-layer, by using the well known general purpose CFD package ANSYS-CFX-11. The work was motivated by the difficulty in choosing the optimal locations for turbines (micrositing) in regions of good energy potential, but with complex topography. The simulations were compared with data from landmark experiment at Askervein Hill -Scotland, in 1983. The resulting simulations also were compared favorably with the results of another package for wind simulation.
Application of digital filtering for minimizing aliasing effects in atmospheric turbulent surface layer spectra M. F. Gobbi, M. Chamecki, N. L. Dias Water Resources Research, 2006 We propose a very simple and straightforward technique to reduce aliasing effects on the digital spectra of turbulent data from field experiments. A detailed analysis of the technique is done, and it is tested and compared with more traditional low‐pass filtering and with oversampling. The proposed method shows satisfactory results for all tests performed.
