  • An introduction to diabetes drug discovery in biomedical industry through artificial intelligence, using Lichens' secondary metabolites
    N. Rajaprabu, P. Ponmurugan
Marvels of Artificial and Computational Intelligence in Life Sciences, 2023
Proven history in science shows that natural products play a vital role in drug discovery, specifically for immune deficiencies, infectious diseases, and other therapeutic areas, including cardiovascular diseases and multiple sclerosis. Monk Agastyar and Pandit Ayothidhas contributed more to the field of Siddha through mono and polyherbal medicine and cured many diseases, including oxidative stress and diabetes. Using computational and analytical intelligence methods, this study aims to develop a natural phycobiont (lichens) edible source of metabolites for the chronic and metabolic disorder type II diabetes. The level of docking was ranked based on the iGEMDOCK grading function, with zero being the most accurate ligand. Ultimately, each complex from each fungus that ensured different binding pockets of the 6AK3 had been designated throughout the virtual screening process. Based on the uppermost energy value, the best compounds from each fungus showed accurate molecular docking. Out of the 22 compounds tested, the anthracene-9-one and acetamide found in R. conduplicans showed a high binding capacity. Meanwhile, the binding energy potential of M-Dioxan-4-ol, 2,6-dimethyl, obtained from X. curta, and 2-Chloroethyl Methyl Sulfoxide, obtained from M. fragilis, was enormous. 3, 4-13, 14-dodecahydr-18,18a-dihydroxy-2-methyl-, and 1,4-Bis (trimethylsilyl) benzene were all found in P. reticulatum.
  • Evaluation of Antioxidants, Antidiabetic, Antiinflammatory Active Compounds from Leptogium rivurale Through In-Vitro and In-Silico Studies

    Letters in Applied Nanobioscience, 2022
Leptogium rivurale is a flooded jelly skin lichen as the surface becomes jelly on wet. It is a cyanolichen with a cyanobacterium Nostoc. In this present study, Leptoguium rivurale were collected from Kodaikanal and extracted using methanol and distilled water. Qualitative analysis of phytochemicals from the extracts showed the presence of carbohydrates, glycosides, phenols, terpenoids, saponins, and proteins. The methanol extract was found to inhibit the α-amylase enzyme activity better than aqueous extract. The methanol extract was found to have better DPPH radical scavenging activity and anti-inflammatory activity than aqueous extract. Then the extract was subjected to GC-MS analysis. The molecules obtained through GC-MS analysis were subjected to in-silico molecular docking simulation using AutoDock software. Cyclohexanol and oxirane were the potential drug candidates identified.
  • A new record of bloodstain lichen (Haematomma) from Southern Western Ghats to the Indian biota
    Nagaraj Rajaprabu, Ponnusamy Ponmurugan
    Feddes Repertorium, 2022
Abstract Recent explorations in Megamalai Tiger reserve and Wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu has resulted in the documentation of new bloodstain lichen, Haematomma collatum Haematommone with UV negative taxonomic species. It has been collected for the first time and hence it forms a new record for India. A detailed description of Haematommaceae , Taxonomical keys and Photographs are provided for rapid identification.
  • Phorophyte specificity of lichen community, with ecological taxation in Suruli watershed, Southern Western Ghats

The Lichens is an essential component of all kinds of ecosystems. They are one of the flora's dominant components, and it accumulates about eight percent of the terrestrial ecosystem. India is an assorted vegetative tropical country. Four major ecological factors produce several microclimatic niches for the growth of lichens in the Western Ghats. First attempt to correlate the lichen population and species richness with the natural and silviculture challenges. During collection, surprisingly uninformed rainfall has observed in the summer season too. Eco-lichenological ranks premeditatedly founded on altitude, geo-specificities, substrates or habitats and morpho-types. The environmental variables revealed that the lichen density was more about spring to summer (27.3 to 25.5%), 23.5 to 18.5% during the winter and late autumn periods. The luxuriant growth of lichen thalli has notified on the rainy and Autumn seasons. Meanwhile, the crustose group of fruiting bodies flourished during the summer season. The terrestrial forest habits occurring on the cryptogamic and phanerogamic plants, including lichens. Most forests hold with the tribal and ethnic community; they suffered from terrestrial human and motor vehicle movements and forest fires, landslides, and more, including endangered species. Natural and manmade forestation practises to be regulating to conserve forest and dependences.
  • A new record of pyrenocarpous lichen to the Indian biota
    N. Rajaprabu, P. Ponmurugan, Gaurav K. Mishra
    Journal of Threatened Taxa, 2021
Pyrenula subglabrata (Nyl.) Müll. Arg. is reported as a new find to Indian lichen biota from Arunachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states. The species is found growing on smooth bark trees of both the regions.
