Dynamic transformation as a tool to enhance the cold-working response of a 9% Cr steel through stress and strain partitioning Mantosh Mandal, B. Aashranth, Ashish Kolhatkar, M. Arvinth Davinci, Dipti Samantaray, V. Karthik, M. Vasudevan Journal of Materials Science Materials in Engineering, 2025 Dynamic transformation in a 9% Cr steel is shown to improve the room-temperature workability through microstructural modification. The dynamically transformed microstructure contains 10–18% of ductile ferrite in a brittle martensitic matrix. The two-phase microstructure results in 40% higher uniform elongation and 25% lower tensile strength, which facilitate cold working. Further, the presence of ductile ferrite is shown to increase the strain hardening exponent, further enhancing the workability. It is also shown that the dynamic transformation alters the martensitic matrix, and creates a secondary source of softening. These softening effects and overall mechanical response are accurately modelled by a robust modified rule-of-mixtures formulation with prediction error of ~ 0.3%. This investigation reveals the potential of dynamic transformation to create intermediate microstructures suitable for cold working during the manufacturing process and establishes the limits within which deformation can be safely imparted.
Mitigating manufacturing defects in seamless tubes: A failure analysis perspective Mantosh Mandal, B. Aashranth, M. Arvinth Davinci, Dipti Samantaray, M. Vasudevan Procedia Structural Integrity, 2024 Ni-base superalloys are designed to withstand excessively harsh conditions such as high temperatures, pressures, and corrosive environments. Although the in-service degradation of these materials has been extensively studied, very little information about their manufacturing aspects is available in the public domain. However, these alloys are susceptible to the generation of defects during prior thermal and mechanical processing. Inadequate attention to these aspects leads to defects during manufacturing. A case study pertaining to such defects in a Ni-base superalloy is presented to highlight the issues and identify recommended actions.
Microstructural manifestation and kinetics of dynamic transformation in a W-modified 9%Cr steel Mantosh Mandal, B. Aashranth, Dipti Samantaray, M. Arvinth Davinci, Vani Shankar, M. Vasudevan Materials Science and Technology United Kingdom, 2023 Dynamic transformation (DT) of austenite to ferrite is shown to occur in a W-containing 9%Cr steel during hot deformation across a wide range of strain rates. A new facet of DT, namely its dependency on process kinetics, is revealed by examining work-hardening rate and strain rate. The kinetics of DT is associated with competing processes of dislocation immobilisation and remobilisation, both of which have a complex dependence on strain rate. The microstructural manifestation of DT-ferrite is examined and contrasted with that of conventional ferrite on the basis on morphology. This contrast arises from different modes of transformation and resultant differences in crystallography. DT is placed in the practical context of thermo-mechanical processing by addressing issues of process control and stability.
