Optimizing zinc and boron application rates in Indian mustard for improving productivity, quality and nutrient use efficiency in calcareous soil Vidisha Vidya, Sanjay Kumar, Vipin Kumar, Ranjan Laik, Sumit Sow, Biswajit Pramanick, Ramdayal Chaudhary, Sneha Sen Journal of Plant Nutrition, 2026 Micronutrient management is crucial for enhancing crop productivity and quality in calcareous soils. A two-year (2022-24) field study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different zinc (Zn) and boron (B) application rates on growth, yield, nutrient uptake, oil quality, and nutrient use efficiency in Indian mustard grown in Typic Haplaquepts soil. The experiment was carried out in factorial randomized block design with three replications which include four Zn (0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 kg ha−1) and four B (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 kg ha−1) application rates. Results demonstrated that 7.5 kg Zn ha−1 significantly improved plant height (12%), siliqua per plant (21%), seeds per siliqua (29%), and seed yield (29%) compared to the control. Similarly, 2.0 kg B ha−1 enhanced seed yield by 23% as compared to no application of B. Combined application of 7.5 kg Zn ha−1 and 2.0 kg Zn ha−1 improved the oil content by 7.4% as compared to control. Post-harvest soil analysis indicated significant increases in available Zn (42%) and B (54%) with their respective highest application rates (7.5 kg, 2.0 kg ha−1), while macronutrient status remained unaffected. Thus, application of 7.5 kg Zn ha−1 and 2.0 kg B ha−1 optimizes mustard productivity, nutrient use efficiency and oil quality in calcareous soils, providing a sustainable micronutrient management strategy for enhanced crop performance.
Herbicide evaluation in direct seeded rice in the middle Gangetic plains of India Bharati Upadhaya, Ravindra Kumar Tiwari, Kaushal Kishor, B. R. Harsha, Sumit Kumar Singh, Sanjay Kumar, Shailesh Kumar Weed Biology and Management, 2024 A field experiment was conducted in Samastipur district of Bihar, India during kharif season of 2021 and 2022 to identify suitable herbicides for control of composite weed flora in direct seeded rice. Compared to weedy check, application of bispyribac sodium + pyrazosulfuron ethyl as tank mixture effectively reduced weed density at 50 days after seeding during both the cropping season (82% and 86%, respectively) and weed dry weight (7.62 and 7.18 g m−2, respectively) over control and as a result yielded maximum during both the cropping season (47.92 and 51.32 q ha−1, respectively). Based on overall performance, bispyribac sodium + pyrazosulfuron ethyl may be considered as viable weed management option in direct seeded rice for the rice growers of middle Indo‐Gangetic region.
Diversification of Rice-Based Cropping System for Improving System Productivity and Soil Health in Eastern Gangetic Plains of India Bharati Upadhaya, Kaushal Kishor, Vipin Kumar, Navnit Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Vinod Kumar Yadav, Randhir Kumar, Ahmed Gaber, Alison M. Laing, Marian Brestic, Akbar Hossain Agronomy, 2022 Mono-cropping in the farming system decline in farm profit, climate change, and food insecurity are some of the major concerns that lead to unsustainability in the agricultural production system in the Eastern Gangetic Plains. A study was conducted for three years from June 2019 to June 2022 at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa, Bihar, India, to assess the profitable and best rice-based cropping system through crop diversification for sustainable agriculture. Ten different cropping sequences were exploited using randomised block design and replicated thrice, with the system productivity ranging from 8.70 to 24.95 t ha−1 under the different cropping sequences. The system productivity was increased by 187% and profitability by 299.52% in the maize − Cole crops − sesame cropping system over the rice − wheat cropping system. A diversified cropping system with black gram − maize + vegetable pea − sesbania possessed significantly more soil organic carbon (0.49%), bacterial population (47.85 × 106 cfu/g soil), azotobacter population (42.96 × 104 cfu/g soil), phosphate solubilising bacteria (20.72 × 106 cfu/g soil), dehydrogenase activity (4.39 µg TPF/g/h), fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity (17.28 µg fluorescein/g/h) and acid phosphatase activity (451.46 µg pNP/g/h), as well as urease activity (47.21 µg NH4+/g/h), relative to the rice–wheat cropping system. Therefore, the adoption of vegetables and legumes as diversified crops are viable options for enhancing productivity, profitability and soil health in the EGPs.
