  • The Interplay Between Governance and R&D Investment in Driving Asia’s Economic Growth: An Empirical Inquest
Vaishali Singh, Promila Das, Ekta Singh, Ramesh Chandra Das
    Economies, 2025
While a number of studies have analyzed the determinants of economic growth in Asia, the research on the synergistic interplay of the quality of governance and the investments in research and development have not received nuanced attention in the scholarly research. This study fills the research gap by looking at the joint effect of governance and R&D investment on economic growth in Asian nations with varying levels of development. Using the fixed-effects model and the generalized method of moments (GMM) model, this study investigated the individual and combined effect of governance and R&D investment in driving economic growth in the static as well as dynamic panel of 34 Asian nations for the period 2000–2024. The study further undertakes a comparative assessment of the lower-middle-income, upper-middle-income, and high-income economies on the continent. The findings reveal that the interaction between R&D and governance is negative and significant in lower-middle-income countries such as India, Indonesia, Philippines, and Tajikistan, showing that weak institutions hinder R&D effectiveness. It turns strongly positive in upper-middle-income economies such as China, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Thailand, as governance strengthens, but becomes insignificant, in high-income nations such as Israel, Korea, Singapore, and Qatar, suggesting diminishing returns. The results under dynamic panel estimation show positive and significant effects of the interaction between R&D and governance upon per capita GDP in all countries’ panels. The findings suggest that the diverse and nonlinear progression from technological adoption to creation in Asian nations requires sustained investments in R&D and deliberate policy alignment with national innovation systems.

  • The role of gender equality and effective governance in reducing income inequality: Evidence from developing Asia
    Vaishali Singh, Promila Das
Social Sciences and Humanities Open, 2025
While effective governance is seen as a cure for development ills, the equalizing role of gender equality in the distribution of income also needs to be emphasized. This study analyses the link between economic disparity and effective governance in 21 emerging Asian countries, as well as the moderating function of gender equality in this causal connection. Fixed effects model is used to analyse the panel data covering the period from 2001 to 2022. The results indicate two main findings -(1) Enhancements in governance metrics, such as government efficiency, regulatory quality, and corruption control, may not always result in a decrease in income inequality; in fact, in certain situations, they may make the gaps worse. (2) Income inequality is always made worse by gender inequality, but when gender disparity and governance interact, distributive results can be moderated by inclusive governance arrangements. This implies that while strengthening governance generally contributes to reducing inequality, its effectiveness diminishes in contexts of high gender disparity. Therefore, without addressing gender inequality, the capacity of good governance to narrow income gaps remains limited. The study thus emphasizes the need for integrated policy approaches in developing Asia, wherein institutional development and gender equality reforms are carried out simultaneously to achieve equitable growth.

  • Newly created contingency reserve for pursuit of smoother trade: Evidence from BRICS

Convergence and Developmental Aspects of Credit Allocations in Brics Nations Theoretical and Empirical Inquiries, 2024
The chapter seeks to examine the consequences of an industrial recession for the overall economy and quality of credit in the light of an intersectoral setting vide with special reference to BRICS nations. The industrial sector’s output is demand-determined with the prices of the industrial goods being determined by mark-up rule. On the other hand, the agricultural sector has its output constant, owing to the extent to which the area under cultivation is constant and the agricultural prices are flexible. This apart, the model developed in this chapter is based on closed economy considerations and highlights how an industrial recession leads to a dampening of the price of agricultural goods and thereby causes the recession to escalate through the intermediate demand channel. Moreover, the study indicates that the snowballing of bad loan problems can potentially result in the worsening of agricultural prices and thereby deepen the recession already in place. For policy implications, the study examines the efficacy of input subsidy to the agricultural sector and how it works as an indirect credit subvention.
  • THE EFFECT OF GOOD GOVERNANCE INDICATORS ON ECONOMIC GROWTH THROUGHOUT SELECTED ASIAN COUNTRIES
    Promila Das, Manohar Giri
Good Governance and Economic Growth Complimentary or Problematic, 2024
Appropriate governance has been diagnosed as a critical factor in current economic progress. It is crucial to boost the country’s competitiveness and keep the economy running smoothly. Good governance fosters a stable and predictable business environment, attracts foreign investment, and fosters entrepreneurship, all of which help to drive economic growth. On the other side, weak governance can lead to a loss of investor confidence, resource misallocation, and a drop in entrepreneurship, resulting in slower economic growth. The present study intends to investigate the impact of governance indicators on economic growth using World Bank estimates for selected Asian countries from the year 2002 to 2021. Additionally, the study seeks to determine which of the governance indicators contributes the most to economic growth. The results show that China is the most politically stable country, while Afghanistan has the most chaotic political situations. Of the selected Asian nations, China has the greatest gross domestic product (GDP), followed by India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Findings show that political stability, government effectiveness, and regulatory quality all have positive and statistically significant effects on GDP. The findings also show that, within a small group of Asian countries, political stability and governmental performance and regulatory quality play significant roles in determining economic growth.
  • NEW PUBLIC GOVERNANCE AND INCLUSIVE GROWTH IN EAST ASIAN ECONOMIES
    Vaishali Singh, Promila Das
Good Governance and Economic Development Perspectives from Global North and Global South, 2024
Since the 1980s, new public governance has significantly influenced the inclusive growth of East Asian economies. Addressing the difficulties of inclusive growth in East Asian countries, the idea of new public governance has evolved in recent years. This new approach to public governance involves cutting-edge tactics including the use of technological advances, public-private partnerships (PPPs) and participation by stakeholders which have proved crucial in assisting East Asia’s transition to a more dynamic and competitive economy. The chapter explores the impact of new public governance on inclusive growth in East Asian economies, focusing on how these strategies are still being effectively implemented to promote economic prosperity and inclusivity. The Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) are used as a measure of effective governance. The finding proves that all three nations of China, Japan and Korea have displayed remarkable progress on these indicators from 2005 to 2021. The impact of new public governance on inclusive growth is measured by using regression to measure the impact of WGI on the Human Development Index of East Asia. The regression results affirm the claim that effective governance has a favourable effect on human development and inclusive society. To further explore the impact of new public governance on inclusive growth in East Asian economies and the strategies, this chapter provides case studies of the implementation of PPPs in Japan, the use of open data in South Korea and the experimental mix of localization, decentralized and networked-based policymaking in China.
  • Examination of Elements Influencing Mothers’ Dynamic Capacity and Versatility: A Household-level Analysis
    Promila Das
Indian Journal of Human Development, 2023
The study aims at exploring the degree of dynamic capacities and versatility of mothers at the household level and to recognise its general determinants. The sample includes 280 households where mothers with school-going children are the respondents. Principal component analysis is applied to estimate a mother’s dynamic capacities and versatility level. The ordinary least-square regression model is developed to identify the factors that influence the mother’s dynamic capacities and versatility level. The outcome shows that the dynamic capacities and versatility of mothers shift fundamentally across families and in general, it is tolerably high. The further result shows that the higher the level of education and the higher the age at marriage the higher the mother’s capacity to taking decisions and move autonomously. Different elements that add to this are a place of residence, religion and housing conditions.
  • CEO DUALITY AND FIRM PERFORMANCE: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY ON LISTED COMPANIES FROM AN EMERGING MARKET
Pranesh Debnath, Promila Das, Najul Laskar, Shahbaz Babar Khan, Shweta Dhand, Kaushambi Kaushal
Corporate Governance and Organizational Behavior Review, 2021
The primary purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of CEO duality on firm performance. The study is based on secondary data collected from the published annual reports of respective companies and the Capitaline corporate database. The sample consists of 174 listed non-financial companies for eight years from 2011–12 to 2018–19. This study uses an appropriate panel data regression analysis to examine the impact of CEO duality on firm performance. Based on the panel data regression model, the study found mixed results, i.e., the impact of CEO duality on market capitalization is negative significant; however, the impact becomes positive when the firm performance is measured by return on assets. These outcomes of the present study are consistent with previous studies
