    Engineering Research Express, 2023
Maraging steel material characteristics are greatly affected by build orientation and scanning strategies during manufacturing. This research aims to examine the effect of various build orientations and scan strategies on the ultimate strength and microhardness of 18 Ni-300 grade maraging steel. The maraging steel is made using a technology called direct metal laser sintering. Using the Analysis of Variance approach, the effects of processing factors like build orientation, scan techniques, and type of process on ultimate strength, microhardness, and roughness are optimized. The properties tend to be greater in the horizontal orientation when using the XY scan strategy as a result of thermal history variations,. The mechanical performances of maraging steel components in terms of strength values observed were lower in the vertical position compared to all other orientations. The tests are carried out using an L27 orthogonal array and a Taguchi design of experiment. Build orientation XZ, scan method XY, and Solution-aging-aging(SAAT) has the most significant influence on the final ultimate strength, microhardness, and roughness of all the input factors. A2B2C3 is the optimal combination level of control factors. Additionally, a percentage inaccuracy was identified after conducting confirmation tests on the most prominent experimental data.
  • Influence of different build orientation and laser scan strategies on surface quality, Mechanical and Material Characteristics of 18 Ni-300 maraging steel processed through DMLS
Satish Prakash Karlapudy, T. Nancharaiah, V. V. Subba Rao
Australian Journal of Mechanical Engineering, 2023
Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) is a method used to fabricate metal parts through laser sintering. In this research, experiments are designed to study how scanning patterns and build orientation affect the properties of printed maraging steel (MS1) parts. The mechanical and physical properties of DMLS manufactured parts depend primarily on the building direction and scanning strategies. Three different scanning patterns and build orientations were adopted in this research. Tensile, hardness, the surface roughness of DMLS parts were studied and almost entirely dense under different orientations and strategies and generally higher in horizontal orientation with cross-directional strategy because of thermal history variation. The Uniaxial tensile test findings exhibit that MS has significant anisotropic tensile characteristics, dependent on the specimen orientation and scan strategy. Despite the scanning strategy utilised, the vertical orientation produced the lowest mechanical performances of MS1 parts in terms of strength values recorded compared to all other orientations. Microstructural characterisation is carried out on a sample by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical microscope (OM) to analyse the fractured surface defects and pores, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) is used to determine the phase transformations. Understanding the impact of various build orientations in tensile, hardness, Surface quality shall enable the manufacturer to use the DMLS process to produce higher-quality MS1 parts.
  • Flapwise vibration of functionally graded rotating tapered beam with tipmass
    P. Ravi KUMAR
Sigma Journal of Engineering and Natural Sciences, 2022
A flapwise vibration analysis is performed on a functionally graded tapered rotating beam with tip mass. The beam is considered as functionally graded, whose material properties varying in the direction of thickness. It is assumed as beam is a taper beam with uniform width. Using Mori Tanaka method the properties of the functionally graded material are achieved. The first three frequencies of flapwise are obtained using finite element analysis based software ANSYS. By comparing with the results in open literature, the accuracy of the results is tested. The proposed method yielded good results compared with the existing Frobenious method because of good mesh capabilities. Different parametric studies are carried out to investigate the influence of tip mass on the functionally graded (FG) rotating taper beam flapwise frequencies. The influence of rotating speed, hub radius ratio, gradient index, taper ratio and hub radius ratio on flapwise frequency are elaborated with the support of ANSYS results and analytical models. The results show that the variation in tip mass tends to depress the frequencies from 107.19 Hz to 25.31 Hz at 100 rps in fundamental frequency and in third frequency it is decreased from 336.70 to 332.13 Hz at the same rotational speed. Advances in Science and Technology, 2022
Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique that uses a laser to selectively melt metallic powder in a layer-wise manner, in order to produce functional metal components. It offers great freedom in design and facilitates fast iterations, with the potential of speeding up development phases throughout a wide range of industries. Despite these opportunities, its application into industry is limited. One of the problems that are a limiting factor is dimensional accuracy, production time and surface roughness that are introduced to the components during manufacturing. In this work it is focused on to study the influence of process parameters and laser scanning strategy on the build time, part accuracy and surface roughness of as-fabricated Ti-6Al-4V alloy samples through SLM. The specimens are designed and fabricated at various levels of Layer thickness, Laser power and Scanning strategy and its effect on build time, part accuracy and surface roughness are studied
