Advanced Emission Control Techniques Used in Foundries for Separating Contaminants from the Working Medium A. Vimal, S. Venkatesh Efficient Energy Utilization and Emission Reduction Strategies in Plant Operations, 2025 In the view of the public, the potential source of air pollution is foundry industries. The pollution from industries affects the surrounding areas in terms of property, vegetation, animals, and even humans. In order to overcome these effects, the emission from the foundry industries needs to be controlled using advanced emission control techniques. The control techniques include the implementation of equipment like cyclone separators, electrostatic precipitators, CO2 capturing systems, scrubbers, filtration filters, and draft fans. This chapter deals with the functioning of the equipment, its role in applications, and the investigation and development to meet the required efficiency for reducing the contaminants from the working medium. Cyclones usually separate solid particles even up to 0.5 μm, but for separating hydrophilic particles ranging from 0.2 to 2 μm and for separating particles at elevated temperatures, the modification that has to be made in the cyclone is being discussed. Enhancement of flow distribution and reduction of turbulence in electro-static-precipitator (ESP) are being deliberated. The optimum parameter for maximum extraction of CO2 using the CO2 capturing system is being communicated along with transportation and storage techniques. Furthermore, the performance of the self-priming venturi scrubber in iodine removal is discussed. Factors affecting the filtration operation during backwashing are elaborated. The ways of analyzing the vibration signature in the induced draft fan are also been discussed.
Innovations Via CFD: Studies on Pollution Control Equipment Design and Multiphase Flow Simulation S. Venkatesh, S. Vijayan, M.M. Matheswaran Efficient Energy Utilization and Emission Reduction Strategies in Plant Operations, 2025 This study explores innovative methods for designing pollution control components using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). It investigates how CFD simulations can be leveraged to optimize the performance of pollution control systems, such as cyclone separators and scrubbers. Moreover, simulation settings and turbulence schemes utilized for predicting flow dynamics characters in cyclone separators have been discussed in this chapter. In addition, mesh validation for accurate results and its effects on pressure and velocity of flow have been discussed in this chapter.

The Sustainable Development Framework for Oil and Gas Resources R. Suresh Kumar, S. Venkatesh, T. Ramakrishnan, G. Gokilakrishnan Efficient Energy Utilization and Emission Reduction Strategies in Plant Operations, 2025 This chapter provides a comprehensive perspective on developing a robust framework of environmental, socioeconomic, and innovative metics to assess the sustainability of hydrocarbon reserve development. Drawing upon foundational principles of sustainable development (SD), the theoretical framework integrates contemporary methodologies for evaluating production systems’ sustainability. Additionally, this study explores conceptual frameworks defining SD in the oil and gas contexts, identifies priority targets for SD, and examines the intricate relationship among environmental, socioeconomic, and innovative factors. Through the analysis of large-scale gas projects’ impact on regional development, the findings facilitate informed evaluations of oil and gas reserve development sustainability, aligned with core principles of SD.
Studies on the Effect of Baffle Plates in Settling Chamber Performance by CFD and Experimental Analysis S. Venkatesh, R. Krishnaraj, P. Gopal, V. Kavimani Journal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, 2025 The performance of the settling chamber was examined in two scenarios in this study. In case 1, the settling chamber collection efficiency and flow characteristics were predicted without a baffle plate. In case 2, the settling chamber performance was predicted with the baffle plates. In case 2, two baffle plates were placed between the inlet and exit nozzle. The experimental set up was fabricated with the baffle plates to measure the performance. Moreover, the efficiency of the settling chamber was determined for the different inlet velocities. The Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) controller was adopted with the suction fan to vary the inlet velocity. The Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) was used to forecast the settling chamber flow characteristics. In cases 1 and 2, the best capture efficiency results were achieved at 2.5 m/s inlet velocity. The experimental study shows that the settling chamber gathering efficiency was 45% at 52.35µm. It is 44.4% higher than case 1. In CFD analysis, the settling chamber efficiency was 43%. The variation between the experimental and CFD results was 4.4%. The observations show that the pressure drop for the baffle plate setting chamber was increased 4.37 % compared to case1. The maximum settling velocity of the case 1 and case 2 chambers is 1.62 m/s and 2.81
