Arun Karnwal, Manickam Selvaraj, Gaurav Kumar, Anupam Kumar, Abdel Rahman Mohammad Said Al-Tawaha, Aqueel-Ur-Rehman, Natalia Nesterova
    Discover Oncology, 2026
Skin cancer represents one of the most common and clinically significant malignancies worldwide, with rising incidence and substantial mortality, particularly melanoma, which accounts for approximately 75–80% of skin cancer-related deaths despite comprising < 5% of cases. Early detection and accurate prognostication remain essential for improving patient outcomes, yet subjectivity, resource constraints, and inter-observer variability often limit conventional diagnostic methods. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning, have demonstrated remarkable potential in enhancing diagnostic precision, risk stratification, and personalized treatment planning. Convolutional neural networks, vision transformers, and hybrid architectures have achieved dermatologist-level accuracy in classifying dermoscopic and clinical images, while multimodal approaches integrating histopathology, genomics, and patient metadata have improved prognostic assessments. Despite these advances, significant challenges remain, including dataset biases, lack of interpretability, regulatory barriers, and disparities in access to AI technologies. Addressing these challenges through explainable AI, federated learning, robust clinical validation, and equitable deployment strategies will be crucial for translation into routine practice. This review synthesizes current evidence on AI applications in skin cancer diagnosis and prognosis, highlights key technological innovations, and outlines the challenges and future directions necessary to ensure safe, effective, and globally accessible integration of AI into dermatological care..

    Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy, 2025
Deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid pesticide, is known to induce significant oxidative stress and immunotoxicity upon prolonged exposure. This study investigates the biochemical and physiological impact of deltamethrin on Swiss albino mice and explores the protective potential of Syzygium cumini and Nigella sativa seed extracts. Mice were grouped and administered deltamethrin (18 mg/kg) alone or in combination with seed extracts (100 mg/kg each), and biochemical, hematological, and organ-specific parameters were assessed. Deltamethrin exposure led to marked reductions in body and organ weights, altered hematological indices (e.g., elevated WBC, reduced Hb), and significant changes in serum biomarkers, including elevated ALT, AST, ALKP, cholesterol, and creatinine-indicating hepatic and renal stress. Supplementation with S. cumini and N. sativa extracts ameliorated these effects, as seen by normalized organ weights, improved blood profiles, and reduced enzyme levels. The combined extract treatment exhibited synergistic protective effects. These findings suggest that dietary supplementation with antioxidant-rich seed extracts can effectively mitigate deltamethrin induced biochemical stress, highlighting their potential as natural protective agents in pesticide-exposed systems.

  • A comprehensive study of wheat genotypes for combining ability and heritability in drought tolerance
    Sandeep Kaur, Anupam Kumar
    Plant Science Today, 2024
A major challenge in wheat cultivation is the negative impact of water scarcity on growth and yield. Therefore, it is crucial to develop wheat varieties with both high productivity and resilience to drought stress to support food production and improve global food security. The study aims to identify general and specific combining abilities and to understand the genetic mechanisms responsible for key traits by employing half-diallel analysis. In the current study, a half-diallel set comprising 10 x 10 wheat genotypes was subjected to crosses in all feasible combinations, excluding reciprocals, under drought stress conditions. Significant mean squares were observed for both General Combining Ability (GCA) and Specific Combining Ability (SCA) components among the 10 parents and 45 F1 progenies across eleven traits. Assessment of variance components (s2g and s2s), narrow-sense heritability (Hn), broad-sense heritability (Hb) and the GCA/SCA ratio allowed for the determination of the relative contributions of additive and non-additive genetic components. High narrow-sense heritability was noted for traits such as days to 75 % flowering, spike length and biological yield, indicating their predominantly additive genetic control. Conversely, the remaining eight traits exhibited low narrow-sense heritability, suggesting their inheritance is primarily governed by non-additive genetic factors, thus indicating the potential benefits of heterosis breeding. Based on GCA effects, P5 demonstrated superior general combining ability across traits, except for biological yield. P1, P3, P8 and P9 exhibited better combining ability for grain yield per plant. Specific cross combinations including P7×P10, P3×P4 and P5×P6 displayed notable specific combining ability and could be leveraged to develop superior pure lines in subsequent breeding endeavors.

  • Exploring the Influence of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbology on the Antioxidant Potential of Liverwort Asterella multiflora: A Comprehensive Study on Rhizoid and Thallus Anatomy
Mamta Verma, Shabnam ., Sandeep Kotwal, Anupam Kumar
International Journal of Experimental Research and Review, 2024
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is a vital ecological interaction between plants and fungi that enhances nutrient uptake and plant resilience. While extensively studied in vascular plants, AM symbiosis in liverworts remains relatively unexplored. Six populations of Asterella multiflora were collected throughout the year to scan for arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization and enzymatic antioxidant activity. Percent mycorrhizal colonization was measured in smooth as well as tuberculated rhizoids. Anatomical detail of the thallus was also observed. Arbuscules were observed in the cells of the storage zone of the thallus. Enzymatic antioxidant activities, i.e., superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (GPOX), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase activity (APOX) and glutathione reductase activity (GR) were calculated. Maximum enzyme activity was observed in ascorbate peroxidase, which calculated 1.92-2.09 UA/mg protein, while catalase showed minimum activity of 0.01 UA/mg protein. A positive correlation was observed between enzyme activities and percent mycorrhizal colonization. This study delves into AM symbiosis in liverworts, focusing on Asterella multiflora and investigates the impact of AM colonization on enzymatic antioxidant activities, i.e., superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (GPOX), catalase (CAT) ascorbate peroxidase activity (APOX) and glutathione reductase activity (GR). Antioxidants play a crucial role in stress tolerance and plant health, making them central to understanding the implications of symbiotic relationships.

    Plant Science Today, 2024
Panchatikta is an Ayurvedic drug combination of 5 bitter-tasting drugs, namely Azadirachta indica, Tinospora cordifolia, Justicia adhatoda, Solanum virginianum and Trichosanthes dioica. In this study, estimations of the phenolic, flavonoids and tannin contents, HPTLC profile and in vitro anti-oxidant and anti-microbial potential of 3 extracts of the Panchatikta were carried out. The total phenolic content of the Panchatikta combination was almost the same in ethanol, water and hydroalcoholic extracts. Flavonoid content and tannin content were highest in ethanol extract. HPTLC profiling of the 3 extracts of Panchatikta showed the maximum number of peaks for the ethanolic extract. Water extract showed a comparatively smaller number of peaks. The maximum number of peaks was seen after derivatisation. In the DPPH assay, gallic acid has IC50 value of 5.50 ± 0.38 µg/mL; ethanol and hydroalcoholic extracts have IC50 close to 60 µg/mL and water extract has around 90 µg/mL. The ABTS assay showed standard ascorbic acid has a IC50 value of 67.33 ± 0.58 µg/mL while Panchatikta extracts have a much higher IC50. In nitric oxide assay also, tested samples have a higher IC50 when compared with that of ascorbic acid (177.33 ± 5.09). In well diffusion assay for antibacterial screening, all 3 extracts have a significant zone of inhibition at concentrations of 500 µg and 1000 µg. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be resistant to all 3 test samples and standard antibiotic discs. Minimum activity was obtained against Klebsiella pneumonia. Panchatikta extracts at concentrations of 500 µg and 1000 µg showed significant activity against the fungal strains Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporum. In conclusion, the results of the study can provide scientific support for the traditional usage of the Ayurvedic drug combination Panchatikta for various ailments.
