Wet-chemistry synthesis of ultrasmall α-MoC1-x nanoparticles and rGO/α-MoC1-x composite and its evaluation as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction Derik T. Machado, Daniel A. Moraes, Natália M. Santos, Felipe B. Ometto, Edson A. Ticianelli, Laudemir C. Varanda Materials Research Bulletin, 2024 Ultrasmall molybdenum carbide α − MoC 1 − x nanoparticles (1.6 nm) and the hybrid material rGO/ α − MoC 1 − x supported in reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were synthesized by a one-pot oleylamine-mediated route at low-temperature (613 K). They were evaluated as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the acid medium after surface cleaning with an ethanol-acetic acid solution. The electrocatalysts were also thermal treated ( N 2 flow, 773 K/30 min) and compared with untreated ones. Quite large HER activity was observed for the α − MoC 1 − x compared with the rGO/ α − MoC 1 − x and rGO/ α − MoC 1 − x − 773 . In addition, after cycling, all catalysts showed considerable performance improvement assigned to removing residual oleylamine molecules from the electrocatalyst’s surface. Compared to the unsupported sample, the lower catalytic activity in the supported materials was attributed to the ultrasmall carbide nanoparticles oxidation increases. The route is simple, with low costs and energy consumption, showing a high potential to develop efficient electrocatalysts for HER.
Acid selenites as new selenium precursor for CdSe quantum dot synthesis João B. Souza Junior, Beatriz Mouriño, Marcelo H. Gehlen, Daniel A. Moraes, Jefferson Bettini, Laudemir C. Varanda Heliyon, 2024 H NMR confirming their structures. This unprecedented precursor generates high-quality CdSe nanocrystals with narrow size distribution in the zinc-blend structure showing controlled optical properties. Advanced characterization detailed the CdSe structure showing stacking fault defects and its dependence on the used R-O-SeOOH. The QDs formation was examined using a time-dependent growth kinetics model. Differences in the nanoparticle surface structure influenced the optical properties, and they were correlated to the Se-precursor nature. Small alkyl chain acid selenites generally lead to more controlled QDs morphology, while the bigger alkyl chain leads to slightly upper quantum yields. Acid selenites can potentially replace Se-precursors at competitive costs in the metallic chalcogenide nanoparticles. Image 1 is chemically stable, and alcohols are cheap and less toxic than the reactants used today, making acid selenites a more sustainable Se precursor.
Electrospun Composite Bead-on-String Nanofibers Containing CaO2Nanoparticles and MnO2Nanosheets as Oxygen-Release Systems for Biomedical Applications Danilo M. dos Santos, Luana M. Dias, Amanda K. Surur, Daniel A. de Moraes, Ana C. Pavarina, Carla R. Fontana, Daniel S. Correa ACS Applied Nano Materials, 2022 Oxygen-generating biomaterials have the potential to improve tissue engineering and regenerative therapeutic strategies. However, the development of such materials capable of controlling the local partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) in the long term is still a major challenge. Here we report nanostructured composite membranes comprising electrospun fibers exhibiting a bead-on-string structure as a controlled oxygen-release system for periodontitis treatment. For this, calcium peroxide nanoparticles (CaO2 NPs) and manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO2 NSs) were incorporated into the structure of hydrophobic electrospun poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-based nanofibers. We use CaO2 NPs as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-generating precursors when exposed to water, while MnO2 NSs were applied as a nanozyme to catalyze the decomposition of H2O2 to the final oxygen product. Our results revealed that the beads on the fibrous structure acted as reservoirs of CaO2 NPs and MnO2 NSs. Moreover, the composite membranes provided sustained oxygen release over 7 days, where levels were modulated by the CaO2 NP content. Such constructs exhibited suitable physicochemical properties and antimicrobial activities against some bacteria (e.g., Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola) typically associated with aggressive and chronic periodontitis. In vitro studies also revealed that the membranes were not cytotoxic toward human oral keratinocyte (Nok-si) cells as well as enhanced the cell viability when high content of CaO2 NP and MnO2 NS were incorporated into the fiber’s structure. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the nanostructured composite membranes show potential to be employed as oxygen-release platforms for periodontal tissue regeneration.
Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized by Micellar Approach as a Potential Dual-Mode T1-T2 Contrast Agent Laudemir C. Varanda, Watson Beck, Simone J.S. Lopes, Daniel A. Moraes, Natalia M. Santos, Maria Eduarda S. D. Lino Current Nanomedicine, 2022 Purpose: A micellar approach is used to synthesize Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (USPIONs) with an average diameter of 3.4±0.5 nm, suitable for dual-mode T1-T2 contrast agents. Methods: Micelles with 3.8 nm, measured by dynamic light scattering, were obtained by self-organizing the surfactant iron(III) dodecyl sulfate (IDS) in 1-octanol. IDS was prepared by replac-ing Na+ cation in sodium dodecyl sulfate molecule, and its critical micelle concentration (CMC) was measured by electrical conductivity. The USPIONs were synthesized in a biphasic system: IDS in octanol (55% above the CMC) and water containing NaBH4. Results: A yellow precipitate is immediately formed at the water/alcohol interface, rapidly changes to a black one, and transfers to the aqueous phase. The magnetite phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The magnetic behavior shows a major paramagnetic char-acter with a weak ferromagnetic component at 5 K, the latter attributed to the interparticle couplings below its blocking temperature (TB = 35 K). The particles were coated with carboxymethyl dextran, showing an isoelectric point of 2.7 with electrokinetic potential around -30 mV in the physiological pH range. Magnetic relaxation measurements showed relaxivity values r1 = 0.17 mM-1 s-1 and r2 = 1.73 mM-1 s-1 (r2/r1 = 10) in a 3T field. These values infer that the ultrasmall size affects the interac-tions with the protons of the nearby water molecules. The r2 value decreases because the core mag-netization decreases with size; r1 intensifies due to the high surface. Conclusion: The results show a system with high colloidal stability, non-cytotoxic, and potential application as T1-T2 dual-mode contrast agents.
Gold nanowire growth through stacking fault mechanism by oleylamine-mediated synthesis Daniel A. Moraes, João B. Souza Junior, Fabio F. Ferreira, Naga Vishnu V. Mogili, Laudemir C. Varanda Nanoscale, 2020 We assigned the growth mechanism of anisotropic tadpole-like gold nanowires to the stable stacking faults and twinned defect formation, with Au-monomer incorporation onto the faulted-faces, resulting in a tail with a mixture of fcc/hcp phases.
