  • Occlusion-Aware Object Detection Under Fire and Smoke Conditions for Intelligent Surveillance

    Iet Conference Proceedings, 2026
Traditional object detection mechanisms in surveillance systems tend to fail under occlusion-dense scenarios due to fire, smoke, or environmental noise and thus achieve poor reliability in emergency response scenarios. In this paper, the authors introduce a multi-stage deep learning framework that incorporates fire-aware preprocessing and occlusion-resistant object detection with YOLO-based architectures. The pipeline starts with a Fire Detection Module that uses a custom-trained YOLO variant on an annotated fire dataset of 2000 images to detect active fire and smoke areas in video streams. Merged and padded bounding boxes around these areas are expanded by 60% to account for visibility loss because of occlusion, an empirically derived hyperparameter that has been optimized using ablation analysis. The extended regions are fed into a YOLO segmentation model learned from a 3291-image annotated dataset of 21 vehicle components to support fine-grained occluded object detection. Experimental performance indicates dramatic improvement in mean Average Precision (mAP) and F1 scores over typical YOLOv8 baselines, especially for fire-obscured vehicles. Confusion matrix evaluation and F1- confidence curves confirm the model's performance in sustaining classification accuracy at low confidence levels (F1 ≈ 0.84 at 0.36 confidence). This fire-optimized, occlusion-conscious detection architecture significantly enhances the reliability of intelligent surveillance systems operating in low-visibility, high-threat contexts, and it is applicable to deployment in urban traffic surveillance, industrial security, and smart city infrastructure.

Agriculture is transforming at a very fast pace, previously being one of the biggest sources of livelihood for individuals. But with technology coming into play, becoming part of one’s daily life and with its implementation of cutting-edge technologies like machine learning, satellite remote sensing, and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). In this paper, we outline a complete intelligent agricultural solution to help farmers both choose crops and to calculate the NDVI index. Our method utilises an ensemble-based classification model, Random Forest, Support Vector Classifier (SVC), and Gradient Boosting Classifier to suggest the best crops in line with environmental and soil factors such as NPK values, temperature, humidity, rainfall, and pH values. The model shows superior classification performance, with macro and weighted averages of around 0.98 and an accuracy of 98% overall. To promote transparency and trust, we integrate Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME) for interpreting model predictions and additionally use a Large Language Model (LLM) to explain these interpretations in farmer-friendly natural language. We utilise Google Earth Engine (GEE) to, compute NDVI over time. The convergence of explainable AI, natural language interfaces, and remote sensing provides a comprehensive, data-driven decision support system for new-age agriculture in our endeavour to assist the backbone of our country - the hardworking farmers.
  • Palmistry with Deep Learning Approaches Using CNN and OpenCV
Het Nakhua, Mustansir Motiwala, Neha Katre
Proceedings of the 2024 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Global AI Summit 2024, 2024
Palmistry, an ancient tradition interpreting hand features, offers insights into personality traits, life potential, and destiny. While automated palmistry solutions exist, they often overlook important factors like gender and hand dominance, resulting in incomplete analyses. This paper proposes a new approach incorporating Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for gender and hand dominance detection, along with OpenCV for line identification. The methodology consists of three primary segments: gender identification, hand dominance determination, and palm line detection. For gender detection, a CNN was constructed using TensorFlow and Keras, featuring three convolutionallayers, max-pooling layers, a flatten layer, and two dense layers. This model achieved 99.91% accuracy on the training dataset and 98.24% on the testing dataset. Hand dominance detection utilized a comparable CNN architecture, achieved 100% training accuracy and 99.81% testing accuracy. Palm line detection used OpenCV, involving preprocessing steps such as resizing, grayscale conversion, and smoothing with bilateral and Gaussian filters. The Heart, Head, and Life lines were identified using the Canny edge detector and Hough transform. By bridging the gap between current technology and traditional palmistry, this holistic approach offers a valuable tool for introspection and guidance. By merging traditional practices with advanced computational methods, the approach ensures more precise and comprehensive palmistry analysis, addressing the shortcomings of existing automated solutions.

Road irregularities like potholes, which are common and persistent, provide a serious problem for both drivers and the government. In order to address this long-standing problem, the research study examines a novel strategy that combines transfer learning with ResNet (Residual Neural Network) methodologies. The main cause of pothole formation is unfavourable weather, which gradually erodes road surfaces and leaves voids behind. Potholes are created as a result of these voids expanding over time and are frequently hidden by flooding or rain during bad weather. Current government responses frequently suffer from delays and resource shortages and rely on manual inspections and reactive repair plans. The paper suggests developing real-time, inexpensive pothole detecting systems with a remarkable accuracy rate of 98.24 percent by utilising ResNet and transfer learning. These solutions seamlessly incorporate the locations of discovered potholes, along with geo-tagging tools that accurately identify each pothole’s coordinates and map them to Google Maps for public access and awareness. This proactive strategy enables authorities to quickly identify and prioritise maintenance activities, greatly improving road safety, lowering the cost of vehicle maintenance, and efficiently allocating resources. In the end, while being specifically created for use by government officials, this technology-driven strategy offers a significant improvement over current methods and stands to benefit the public by raising the calibre of transportation infrastructure.
