Andean agriculture and hand tools: A qualitative approach of exploration of needs, barriers, and opportunities for innovation Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, José del Carmen Abad Castillo, Claudia Cardenal, MD Zahid Hasan, Amit Bhattacharya, Jerome T. Galea Plos One, 2026 Peruvian Andean agriculture primarily consists of subsistence activities that rely on traditional methods. Rural farmers use locally made hand tools, often designed without technical or ergonomic considerations, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. This study examined farmers’ views, needs, barriers, and support in hand tool design, and how they assess satisfaction with tools during potato harvesting. A qualitative study using a phenomenological design was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 13 rural farmers from Yanaca, Apurímac, Peru. A total of 25 interviews were conducted, audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed via a mixed coding strategy. Data was organized using a thematic approach and triangulated to validate coding. The results from the first guide were organized into five themes: task, human, product, qualitative and environmental. Some aspects such as social and techniques aspects for adopting hand tools emerged as well as enablers like economic accessibility, similarity to traditional tools. Six themes emerged from second guide covering tools conditions for efficient use, pre-work preparation, evaluation of the tool, consequences of a deficient tool, accumulated experience and appropriation; and family and gender dynamics. We found that hand tools used in high-Andean agriculture are shaped by technical features such as weight and handle size, and external aspects like climate effect and cultural familiarity, while material limitations, rough handle surface or inadequate tool size can act as barriers. In addition, efficiency of tools during work, preparation like a sharpened tip, fit between components head and handle, local maintenance facilitates farmers’ satisfaction. These findings suggest that agricultural hand tool design should go beyond technical aspects to incorporate cultural and practical perspectives.
Evaluation of usability and acceptability of a Peruvian telemental health service for early assessment among vulnerable occupational workers: Mixed-method study with a user-centered design approach Jimmy Andreyvan Cainamarks-Alejandro, Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, Miguel Angel Burgos-Flores, Jaime Rosales-Rimache, Jonh Astete-Cornejo, David Villarreal-Zegarra Plos One, 2026 Background The COVID-19 pandemic marked an increase in depressive, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, more specifically among healthcare workers, teachers, and police officers. These workers face external and occupational factors which had a significant impact on mental health, significant increase in workload and direct exposure to the virus, shortage of personnel protective equipment, and instances of abuse, including discrimination. Mental health care in primary care requires a process of early identification and timely referral of complex cases. Telehealth emerges as an effective alternative for addressing challenges in mental health care, although its implementation encounters obstacles. Objective To design a telehealth service that facilitates screening, initial management, and timely referral for mental health diagnoses in workers with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, and to evaluate usability, acceptability, and user satisfaction. Methods Mixed-method study with a user-centered design approach involving key external and internal service users in three sequential stages (pre-design, co-design, and post-design). The study phases lasted 6 months, involving a total of 23 participants in the pre-design phase (contextual inquiry and preparation and training), 12 participants in the co-design phase (framing the issue, generative design, and sharing design), and in the post-design phase, 4 participants were involved in service implementation, and 81 participants—drawn from the subgroup of 134 users who received psychoeducation—were included in the efficacy assessment. Results The proposal included the development and evaluation of a service model guide and a telehealth software platform. First, the participants took part in a series of workshops (Pre-design, Co-design) where they provided ideas for meeting the product requirements, based on the Design Thinking methodology framework. The telehealth service model was named TelePsico CENSOPAS. It comprised four processes: a) Service promotion; b) User pre-identification; c) Appointment management; d) Psychoeducation counseling and referral. The Telehealth platform was designed through three cycles of an iterative process and integrated a proprietary development platform with third-party service technologies for communication support and information exchange. During post-design, the pilot test involved 698 screened patients; 193 were identified with mental health risks, and 134 of them received psychoeducation sessions. In addition to user acceptance, the usability score of the platform was 86.1 ± 16.9 SD, satisfaction dimensions of the service was 45.1 ± 7.2 SD for satisfaction with care processes, and 36.7 ± 5.2 SD satisfaction with psychological care. Conclusion The proposal for mental health telehealth services and its supporting platform was successfully developed and accepted by both internal and external users, particularly within well-structured occupational health services in workplaces serving vulnerable occupational groups. In addition, it achieved higher satisfaction and usability scores than Peru’s outpatient care services. These findings support the replicability of user-centered design frameworks—such as design thinking—within the occupational health sphere.
Interventions That Use Highly Visual Social Media Platforms to Tackle Unhealthy Body Image in Adolescents and Young Adults: Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials and Quasi-Experimental Studies Anthony Copez-Lonzoy, Janina Bazalar-Palacios, Nikol Mayo-Puchoc, Gustavo Calderon de la Cruz, Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, Evelyn Goicochea-Ríos, Juan Carlos Bazo-Alvarez Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2026 Background Highly visual social media (HVSM) platforms such as Facebook (Meta Platforms, Inc), Instagram (Meta Platforms, Inc), TikTok (ByteDance Ltd), and Snapchat (Snap Inc) have become central to the digital lives of adolescents and young adults. While these platforms have been linked to body dissatisfaction, they are also increasingly used as vehicles for health promotion. However, the evidence on interventions delivered through HVSM to address body image issues remains fragmented. Objective This review aimed to synthesize available evidence on interventions using HVSM platforms to reduce negative body image in adolescents and young adults. Methods We conducted a systematic search across 5 electronic databases (Scopus, MEDLINE, APA Psynet, Embase, and Web of Science) for studies published between January 2012 and October 2025. Eligible studies included experimental or quasi-experimental designs evaluating the effect of an HVSM-based intervention on body image outcomes in individuals aged 13 to 35 years. Risk of bias was assessed using the Risk of Bias Tool 2.0 (Cochrane) and was conducted independently by 2 researchers. Results Eight studies met the inclusion criteria with 4975 participants (2612 in intervention groups and 2363 in control groups). Most studies were conducted in high-income countries and had predominantly female participants. The interventions varied widely in format, duration, and theoretical basis. Microinterventions, brief interactive strategies such as gamified chatbots or short videos, were the most common and had moderate effects. Stimulus-based interventions using content with a positive body image or that did not focus on appearance were also identified, achieving moderate effects (ηp²<.07), as well as combined approaches that integrated digital and face-to-face components to reduce negative body image (P<.001). The use and functionality of interventions using social media platforms were also compared by gender. Conclusions Body image management platforms offer an emerging avenue for implementing body image interventions in adolescents and young adults. While current evidence suggests modest benefits, the high heterogeneity among presentation formats and the variability in duration make comparisons between these studies difficult. This review synthesizes social media–delivered interventions for body image disturbance, going beyond broader digital approaches centered on websites or apps. It identifies cross-platform, putative mechanisms of action and common intervention formats, highlighting the potential of brief interventions for scalable reach and user empowerment via content curation. These findings define targets for optimization and underscore the need for platform safeguards and supportive policy and regulatory frameworks to enable safe real-world implementation, particularly for adolescents.
A systematic review of neurobiological aspects of borderline personality disorder among adolescent patients Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, Alex Rojas-Ortega, Glauco Valdivieso-Jiménez, Anthony Copez-Lonzoy, Andrea Matayoshi, Josmel Pacheco-Mendoza, Vicente A. Benites-Zapata Biomarkers in Neuropsychiatry, 2025 Borderline personality Disorder is a complex mental health condition with disturbances in emotions, self-perception, and relationships. Emerging in adolescence, it reaches its peak in early adulthood, impacting 1%-3% of individuals. We documented this review in PROSPERO with the registration code CRD4202126220. Subsequently, we conducted a comprehensive search across Pubmed, PsycINFO, Medline, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus databases. A systematic synthesis focusing on the neurobiological foundations of borderline personality disorder is presented. A total of 22 studies and 1400 participants were included. Most of the studies 10/22 and 4/22 were from Australia and Germany, respectively. Genetic findings linked the short allele of 5-HTTLPR to the elevated borderline personality disorder traits and revealed neuroendocrine alterations. While imaging studies documented structural brain changes in areas such as the dorsolateral frontal gyrus and hippocampus, and reduced volumes in the anterior cingulate cortex and corpus callosum. Electrophysiological studies indicated abnormal cerebral maturation with diminished P300 amplitudes and increased alpha phase synchrony in borderline personality disorder adolescents, particularly during emotional tests. We concluded that while borderline personality disorder symptoms may endure from adolescence into adulthood, existing evidence lacks consistency in neurobiological findings. Differences in the prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala and hippocampus showed potential significance, however, electrophysiological, biochemical and genetic presented insufficient generalizable evidence for adolescents. Longitudinal studies and further investigation are needed. • Existing evidence lacks robustness to confirm similarities in neurobiological findings between adolescents and adults with BPD. • The prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus play a prominent role, requiring further investigation. • Longitudinal studies with large samples are needed to elucidate the impact of early adverse experiences on BPD neurobiology.
Barriers and limitations to the development of a telemental health service for workers in Peru- A user-centered approach John Astete Cornejo, Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, Jimmy Cainamarks Alejandro, Miguel Angel Burgos-Flores, Juan Ambrosio-Melgarejo, Jaime Rosales Rimache, Sebastián García Cruz Plos One, 2025 Introduction Over the past decade, the surge in digital healthcare services has transformed traditional healthcare, requiring multidisciplinary engagement to adapt to the digital realm. The rise of telehealth services, particularly amid COVID-19, has been widely embraced globally, but its implementation in Peru faces unique challenges, including infrastructure issues and economic constraints. Therefore, this research aims to identify the barriers and limitations in developing a telemental health service for screening, evaluation, and timely referral of vulnerable occupational groups. Materials and methods A qualitative study was undertaken. We adopted a phenomenological approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews with vulnerable occupational groups and decision-makers. We conducted 23 interviews: 5 providers of telemental health services, 5 teachers users, 5 police officers users and 5 health professionals of telemental health services, and 3 decision-makers involved in telemental health regulation in Peru.; exploring experiences, barriers, and facilitators related to mental telemental health. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim, furthermore, a thematic analysis was done to identify key themes. Results The research identified barriers and limitations to developing a telemental health services screening service based on the experiences of workers, some of them were related to user dissatisfaction, emphasizing the need for personalized solutions beyond technical aspects. Scheduling issues call for flexibility and improved communication. Healthcare professionals’ varied experiences highlight the necessity for targeted training, while successful telemental health services integration demands addressing resource limitations through a comprehensive approach. Conclusion The study advocates for a holistic, user-centred paradigm in telemental health services implementation, addressing both technological aspects and human and systemic elements. Multifaceted challenges inherent in telemental health, particularly in Peru, emphasize the need for strategic interventions by stakeholders. The study calls for a policy shift towards enhancing telemental health equity through system-level changes and eliminating structural barriers for marginalized populations.
Implementation of occupational safety and health services and telehealth in Peru: a narrative review Jonh Astete-Cornejo, Miguel Angel Burgos-Flores, Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, Jimmy Andreyvan Cainamarks-Alejandro, Juan Israel Ambrosio-Melgarejo, et al. Revista Brasileira De Medicina do Trabalho, 2025 Although occupational health aims to protect the well-being of workers, challenges persist in workplaces, such as the provision of occupational safety and health services and the availability of occupational telehealth. This study's objective was to examine the implementation of occupational safety and health services and telehealth in Peru. A review was conducted of technical documents and regulations related to occupational safety and health services and occupational telehealth applicable to the Peruvian context. Forty percent of Peruvian workplaces lack occupational safety and health services, reflecting a similar issue across Latin America and Europe. Barriers such as corporate commitment and financing were identified. Occupational telehealth was utilized during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting its potential to strengthen occupational safety and health services. The lack of occupational safety and health services and occupational telehealth can be overcome through regulatory support, enforcement, and incentives for employers.
Preventive, safety and control measures against Avian Influenza A(H5N1) in occupationally exposed groups: A scoping review Haydee Susana Catalan Saenz, Liliana Cruz-Ausejo One Health, 2024 Introduction: During the outbreak of avian influenza, A (H5N1) (IA) in wild and domestic birds recorded in January 2023, the epidemiological alert has been extended due to its potential contagion to humans, particularly in those exposed occupational groups. Objective: to identify the primary occupational risk groups, as well as the preventive, safety, and control measures against IA intended or implemented in these positions. Material and methods: A systematic search was conducted in Pubmed, Scopus, Web of science, Scielo and literature databases. Scientific articles, normative documents, and technical reports identifying vulnerable occupational groups and preventive measures against IA were included. Two authors conducted a full-text review, extracting information independently, and findings were summarized narratively. Results: A total of 5518 documents were identified, and 30 reports were included. 20% of the reports were published in 2023, 13/30 were affiliated to a university institution. Occupationally exposed groups were identified both directly and indirectly. 63.3% of reports identified breeders, poultry farmers and sellers as the most concerning occupational group, while 60% identified biosecurity practices (use of PPE, handwashing) as the primary measure against IA, followed by strategies such as education (training and capacity-building). Conclusion: Occupational groups of interest were identified, primarily those involved in sales, commerce, and the handling of bird waste with potential exposure to IA. Furthermore, the maintenance of biosecurity measures, cleaning-disinfection practices, and educational strategies in workplace settings are recommended.
Occupational accidents in mining workers: scoping review of studies published in the last 13 years Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, Nieves Alejandra Cama-Ttito, Patricia Flores Solano, Anthony Copez-Lonzoy, Víctor Juan Vera-Ponce BMJ Open, 2024 ObjectiveMining activity represents one of the most hazardous occupations related to health, with 8% of fatal injuries concentrated in this sector worldwide. Thus, it is crucial to timely identify the factors involved in such injuries. We aimed to explore the sociodemographic and occupational/organisational factors associated with injuries, causative agents and subsequent disabilities and fatality of workers exposed to occupational injuries in the mining sector.DesignA secondary scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines.Data sourcesScopus, Embase, Virtual Health Library, SciELO and PubMed databases were searched in February 2022 and updated in October 2023. The protocol was developed in April 2022.Eligibility criteria for selecting studiesWe included observational studies published within the last 13 years (2010–2022) which provided information on injuries of the mining workers and reported associated factors as well as health consequences.Data extraction and synthesisTwo independent reviewers examined the eligibility criteria, screened and coded the extracted information using prevalidated data extraction tools, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses—Extension for Scoping Reviews reporting guidelines.ResultsA total of 123 studies were found, of which nine were selected for inclusion in this review. Participants were between 15 and 80 years old, and the rate of injuries ranged from 4.4% to 10.6% of reported cases. Among the total selected studies, mechanical agents were identified as the leading cause of injuries in six studies. The factors associated with injuries included age, gender (female) and biochemical characteristics. On the other hand, occupational and organisational factors encompassed work shift, outsourcing (contractors) and less than 2 years of experience in the sector.ConclusionThis review emphasises that both work-related and individual characteristics are significantly related factors of injuries. Moreover, commonly reported health consequences of injuries encompass mortality, average days lost and permanent, partial or total disability.
Examining the relationship between intimate partner violence and child development program attendance in young children: A cross-sectional study Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, Jazmin Figueroa-Collado, Alfonso Chavera-Caceres, Victor Juan Vera-Ponce, Pablo D. Valencia, Guido Bendezú-Quispe Medicine United States, 2024 The aim of the present study was to determine the association between different types of intimate partner violence against women and nonattendance at the Growth and Development Control Program (CRED or well-child visits) of their children under 5 years of age. This was an analytical cross-sectional study that comprised a secondary analysis of data from the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES in Spanish) of Peru, 2019. Data from 19,647 mothers (aged 15–49 years) and their children under 5 years were analyzed. The independent variables were the types of intimate partner violence = emotional, physical, and sexual. The outcome variable was nonattendance at CRED in the last 6 months. The mean maternal age was 30.47 ± 6.66 years; 66.1% of children were between 25 and 60 months of age; the prevalence of nonattendance at CRED was 29.9%. A relationship was found between partner violence against the mother and nonattendance at CRED. Specifically, there was a higher probability of nonattendance in the children of women who experienced partner violence (sexual = aPR = 1.25 [95% CI = 1.07–1.44]; physical = aPR = 1.17 [95% CI = 1.08–1.26]; emotional = aPR = 1.12 [95% CI = 1.03–1.21]). This study showed an association indicating that children born to mothers experiencing intimate partner violence exhibit an elevated likelihood of nonattendance at CRED when compared to children of mothers not subjected to such violence. Therefore, emphasizing the promotion and monitoring of child development, especially for those with a history of maternal violence, should be a primary priority, particularly in primary care.
High frequency of carpal tunnel syndrome and associated factors: A cross-sectional study in Peruvian workers from agro-export industry Rosalinda Tassara, Jorge Inolopú, Liliana Cruz-Ausejo, Kevin Jesús Mayma, Fernando Soncco-Llulluy, Jaime Rosales-Rimache Medicine United States, 2023 Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a peripheral mononeuropathy caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist and has been reported in workers who perform repetitive movements that involve actions of sustained grasping of vibrating objects. We carried out a cross-sectional analytical study in March 2018 to identify the factors associated with the CTS among workers of agro-export companies in Ica-Peru. CTS confirmation in our study was based on having at least 1 positive screening test (Tinel or Phalen) and a presumptive result of CTS by the Kamath and Stothard Questionnaire. We carried out 4 Poisson regression models to evaluate the factors associated with CTS based on epidemiological and statistical criteria. We enrolled 112 agro-export workers in production (42.0%), packing (35.7%), and administration (22.3%) working areas. The CTS frequency in Peruvian agro-export workers in production, packing, and administrative working area were 78.7%, 45.0%, and 28.0%, respectively. The bivariate analysis found a relationship between the CTS with age, female sex, sports practice, job seniority in the working area (year), and repetitive wrist movements (hours per day). In the multivariate analysis, only job seniority in the working area (year) and repetitive wrist movements maintained their association with CTS. Occupational factors are significantly associated with a high frequency of CTS, such as job seniority in the working area (year) and repetitive wrist movements in agro-export workers. Surveillance programs should be held to prevent, reduce, and monitor workers’ health status.
