Numerical simulation of reverse cyclic loading in precast column and pocket foundation connection A. Hemamathi, K. P. Jaya, Binu Sukumar Scientific Reports, 2026 Precast concrete connections are often critical points of vulnerability during seismic events if not adequately designed. This study investigates the cyclic behaviour of precast column-to-foundation pocket connections using two distinct reinforcement detailing strategies. In the first configuration (PC I), the connection was based on the model proposed by Canha et al. (2012), enhanced with additional corner dowel bars. The second configuration (PC II) adopted independent reinforcement for each transverse pocket wall. A G + 3 reinforced concrete structure was modelled according to Singapore codes, with detailing compliant with IS 456 and IS 13,920. Numerical simulations were conducted on 1:2 scaled specimens using ABAQUS 6.14, and results were compared with experimental data. Key parameters analyzed include ultimate load capacity, strain behaviour in concrete and steel, energy dissipation, and displacement ductility. The simulation accurately reproduced experimental trends (Hemamathi & Jaya, 2021), with average deviation within 15%. The findings provide valuable insights into the seismic performance of precast pocket connections and inform more resilient detailing practices.

Groundwater remediation techniques around Kodungaiyur dump yard R. Aishwarya, A. Hemamathi, Binu Sukumar, M. Yuvaraj Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2024 The groundwater around the Kodungaiyur dump yard, in Tamil Nadu, India, is polluted due to the percolation of leachate from the dumpsite. This paper proposes three remedial techniques to make the groundwater drinkable for the people living near the Kodungaiyur trash yard. Twelve bore wells around the Kodungaiyur dumpsite provided water samples for which the physicochemical parameters were measured. Moderately high concentrations of Total Hardness (TH), Total Alkalinity (TA), Chloride, Sulphate, Nitrate, Sodium, and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are present in the groundwater around the dump yard. The Physicochemical parameters of the samples tend to deviate from the standards prescribed by WHO and BIS. Therefore, remedial measures such as solar distillation, Activated Charcoal, and the Phytoremediation process are suggested to reduce the contaminants in the groundwater. The activated charcoal removes the unpleasant color of the water completely and makes the water clear and transparent through filtration. The solar distillation process does not affect the pH value and is reduced by 4.5% in the phytoremediation technique. Similarly, the level of chlorides is reduced by 99% in solar distillation and by 56% in the phytoremediation technique. Total hardness is reduced by 89.88% in the solar still process and 56.65% in the phytoremediation technique. Sodium is reduced by 99.88% in solar still and 57.03% in the phytoremediation technique. The economical and eco-friendly nature of the suggested techniques makes it sustainable for future generations.
A Hybrid BCMPO Technique for Optimal Scheduling of Electric Vehicle Aggregators Under Market Price Uncertainty Binu Sukumar, S. Aslam, N. Karthikeyan, P. Rajesh IETE Journal of Research, 2024 A hybrid BCMPO technique for optimal scheduling of electric vehicle aggregators under market price uncertainty is proposed in this manuscript. The proposed method is a combined performance of balancing composite motion optimization (BCMO) and political optimizer (PO); thus, it is known as a BCMPO system. The hybrid optimization system is used in this work to explore the programming of electric vehicle aggregators under market price uncertainty. The proposed electric vehicle aggregator contributes to the market price for increasing profits. To model the uncertainty of market price with the BCMPO system, the higher and lower levels of the upstream grid prices are utilized. The results of the proposed algorithm are utilized to build numerous charging and discharging approaches that may be used via the operator for a robust EV aggregator scheduling under the uncertainty of the upstream grid price. At that time, the proposed model accomplished on MATLAB/Simulink platform performance is related to the existing systems, such as genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm algorithm (PSO) and elephant herding optimization (EHO). The profit of EVs aggregator vs. robust profit using the proposed technique is 10110.
Study on the Design of a Industrial Peb Building Binu Sukumar, A. Hemamathi, R. Aishwarya, Sweetha B, Sneha S 2024 International Conference on Integration of Emerging Technologies for the Digital World Icietdw 2024, 2024 The project is focused on comparison of cost estimates of industrial buildings based on conventional and pre-engineered steel design using Indian code. Many parameters such as building sizes, environmental loads and yield stress values, deflection limit and design codes affect the design of steel members. Industrial gable building is taken for the project work based on location at Puducherry. The analysis of the structure was done using STAAD-PRO software and manual design of the members was carried out as per Indian standards. Portal frame, brace, roof purlins & wall girts analyzed and designed as per Conventional and Pre-Engineered Building concepts. Loads are calculated in accordance with Indian codes. For pre-engineered buildings, cold formed sections are used. Bill of materials is calculated and cost estimates are taken for comparative study. The analytical study revealed the better performance of Pre-Engineered Building than the Conventional Steel Building (CSB) both in design and cost. In PEB, due to the reduction in steel, the dead load is reduced. In PEB the dead load is small which will eventually reduce the foundation size and hence the cost of foundation is reduced. The diagonal bracing for the PEB design offers more feasibility and structural safety as it resists the horizontal forces, which causes sway and deformation in the structure. Therefore, PEB is more advantageous than CSB and can be used for greater spans.
Enhancing concrete performance and sustainability through carbonation curing: Effects of fly ash incorporation and mechanical properties evaluation P. Joyson Silva, Binu Sukumar, A. Hemamathi, P. Ram Shankar, Bommu Aakash, Janda Chaithanya, P. B. Shanmugam Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2024 This research paper intends to assess the characteristics of various concrete samples exposed to carbonation curing. Carbonation curing is a technique used to quicken the solidifying process of concrete by exposing it to carbon dioxide. Concrete treated with carbonation exhibits mechanical and durability properties superior to those treated with moisture. In this study, carbonation-treated concrete was prepared by initially pre-curing and then subjecting it to carbonation curing. The research encompassed testing different properties of concrete specimens treated with carbonation, including compressive strength, tensile strength, and carbonation resistance. The addition of Fly Ash (FA) is renowned for enhancing the durability of reinforced concrete as supplementary contentious materials. In this investigation, concrete cubes were prepared with and without partial substitution of cement by Fly Ash and were encased in plastic covers tightly sealed to prevent air ingress, undergoing carbonation in a controlled environment. Results revealed that the compressive strength of carbonation-treated concrete exceeded that of moisture-cured concrete by 15% to 20% at the same age. These findings indicate that carbonation curing holds promise for enhancing concrete performance in specific applications.
Seismic Performance of Cementitious Grout Filled Coupler and Sleeve Connections in Precast Wall Panels under Cyclic Lateral Loading Joyson Silva PARISUTHAM, Jaya KRISHNAN PRABHAKARAN, Binu SUKUMAR Medziagotyra, 2023 This study investigated the seismic performance of cementitious grout filled coupler and sleeve connections in precast wall panels under cyclic lateral loading. The effectiveness of these connections in enhancing the seismic performance of precast concrete walls was evaluated. In many countries, grouted coupler connections are the preferred option, whereas sleeve connections were more commonly utilized in India due to the belief that a greater portion of the dowel being grouted enhances structural stability. Tests were conducted on full scale precast wall panels to study the behaviour of connections by applying a displacement-controlled cyclic lateral loading and the results were discussed. The experimental study revealed that the cementitious grout filled coupler connection exhibited better seismic performance and was recommended for precast wall panel connections over the grouted sleeve connection. Compared to the grout filled sleeve connection, the specimen with an unbonded segment demonstrated an 8% rise in energy dissipation, while the specimen with a grouted coupler connection displayed a 55 % increase.
