Optimization of the process parameter of lean-grade self-reducing pellets by surface response modelling Ajitesh Barman, Santosh Khan, Rajib Dey, Chanchal Biswas International Journal of Materials Research, 2024 In the Indian context, the production of steel is increasing day by day. The huge crude steel output requires enormous amounts of raw materials from the mining industry. The availability of high-grade steel-making raw materials has decreased worldwide. There are huge challenges for the metallurgist in developing a suitable process in the steel industry, which is essential due to the possible scarcity of high-grade raw materials in the future. In this present study, an appropriate process for lean-grade iron ore and non-coking coals, along with the binders, is used as self-reducing composite pellets for iron making. These composite pellets are made in different combinations, including particle sizes, different non-coking coals, and binders. Initially, the mechanical properties of composite pellets are evaluated through the shatter and abrasion index. Then, cold-bonded self-reducing pellets are directly reduced in a standard tube furnace at varying temperatures and times. The reduced samples are further characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and chemical analysis methods. Finally, Box–Behnken Design statistical modelling based on the extent of reduction (EOR) is successfully utilized for optimizing the process parameters.

Jagadeesha, Sujana Nowshin Laser Assisted Machining Processes and Applications, 2024 A promising method for increasing the capability of machining and lowering the cost of challenging-to-machine advanced materials is laser-assisted machining (LAM). The main advancements in LAM as they relate to metal matrix composites, polymers, and ceramics are highlighted in this study. Surface integrity, tool life, cutting ability, and surface finish are used to define the advantageous qualities that LAM delivers. Moreover, case studies of LAM's financial advantages are provided for a variety of materials. The potential of LAM in the future is then highlighted.
Utilization of micro-fines in sinter making and its implications on bed permeability and sinter quality Chanchal Biswas, Arnab Swarnakar, Arghya Majumder Ironmaking and Steelmaking, 2023 Exploiting low-grade resources and raw material fines is a challenge for metallurgists developing new technologies. Iron-bearing and carbonaceous by-products are generated by ironmaking and steelmaking units and fed into the sinter plant. These by-products, which have varying proportions of ultra-fines, balling properties, moisture retention capacities, and so on, have a significant impact on sinter quality when used in sinter green mixtures. This study investigates the use of micro-fines and how it affects sinter quality while keeping operational factors such as moisture addition, balling index, and bed permeability in mind. In addition, the ideal moisture addition is investigated using higher micro-fines bearing dusts/sludges of various iron-bearing materials. The presence of columnar SFCA (Silico-ferrite of Calcium and Aluminium) is revealed by microscopic examination of the sinter produced with higher micro fines and good permeability, which improves the Reduction Degradation Index. It was also demonstrated that using more micro-fines in the blend and maintaining consistent moisture addition reduced the amount of return sinter produced.
