Durability of high-performance concrete at high temperatures: effects of water-binder ratios and use of silica fume Srinivasan Kandaswamy, Hemavathi Sundaram, Sivarethinamohan Rajamanickam, Yuvaraja Rajendran Revista Materia, 2025 This work examines the impact of altering the water-binder ratios (w/b) and cement/silica fume (SF) replacements on the strength at the compression of High-Performance Concrete (HPC), both before and during prolonged contact with extreme temperature. After preparation and testing, eighteen mixtures were produced. Based on the variation in weight/bulk density, the compressive strength test results at room temperature varied from 58 to 102 MPa. In addition, a novel technique known as “heat endurance” has been implemented to compare HPC responses at high temperatures. The findings demonstrate that pozzolanic interaction with the fillers component of SF improves HPC’s residual compressive strength following exposure to high temperatures. Comparative measurements of retained strength of compression were greatest for blends containing 6%, 12%, and 15% of SF at w/b ratios of 0.30, 0.35, and 0.40. As a consequence, altering the w/b ratio had a substantial impact on the outcomes. Lastly, a variety of measuring methods were offered to assist with the study, such as CT, SEM, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis to evaluate the microstructure modification, porosity, and mass loss of HPC.
Evaluation of the performance of packed bed column for heavy metal ion removal using rice husk powder coated with iron oxide nanoparticles Venkat Saravanan, G Akpen, M Aho, N Baba, A Ali, et al. Global Nest Journal, 2022
The packed bed column study investigated the removal of toxic metal ions (Cr, Pb & Zn) using rice husk coated with iron oxide nanoparticles as an adsorbent material. The chemical fusion process prepared the nanomaterial adsorbent, and iron oxide capping provides stability to the prepared nano adsorbent. The characteristics of prepared nano adsorbents and their stability were examined by SEM/EDX, VSM, XRD, Zeta Potential, TGA & DTA methods. Breakthrough curves confirm the ability to obtain the maximum adsorption under operating conditions of 5, 7.5 & 10 - cm bed heights, 100, 200 & 300 – mg/L of metal ion concentrations and 5, 7.5 & 10 – mL/min of inflow rate of the solutions into the column. The ANOVA & CCD analysis confirms the linearity of actual and predicted values of the amount of adsorption process. Thomas and BDST model studies show the best fit to the regression values for obtaining earlier breakthroughs in the fixed bed column. At the pH of 2.0, the maximum amount of heavy metals adsorption was observed. The maximum desorption rate of the column and adsorbent material was obtained by adding 0.3 N of H2SO4 at 40 minutes average time for all the three metal ions.

Batch, thermodynamic, and regeneration studies of Reactive Blue 19 using Ulva reticulata (biochar) Venkat Saravanan Rajagopalan, Yuarajan Rajendran, Andal Lakshumiah, Gokulan Ravindiran Desalination and Water Treatment, 2022 The goal of this study was to examine if Ulva reticulata biochar could be utilised in a batch approach to remove Reactive Blue 19 (RB19) from the liquid phase. To examine biochar features, the elemental analyzer, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyzer, proximate analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were utilised. As batch influencing factors, the sorbent quantity, solution pH, initial RB19 dye concentration, and temperature were all studied. Isotherm studies (Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich–Peterson, and Sips), kinetic studies (pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order), and thermodynamic studies (Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy) were utilised to forecast the adsorption mechanism. Desorption studies were also conducted to determine the best elutants, solid-to-liquid ratios, and regeneration cycles to evaluate the performance of biochar in the sequential sorption and elution process.
Investigation on Mechanical Behaviour of LM6 Aluminum Alloy Hybrid Composites Processed Using Stir Casting Process S. Suresh Pungaiah, Kuldip Kumar Sahu, R. Yuvaraja, G. Jayahari Prabhu, R. Raja Sudharsan, P. Thamizhvalavan, Kiran Ramaswamy Advances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2022 The stir casting process produces boron nitride (B4N) and fly ash-based LM6 metal matrix composites. This hybrid composite was fabricated by varying fly ash from 3% to 15% with an increase of 3%. While the other reinforcement B4N concentration was kept constant as 3%. The morphology of the metal matrix composite is analysed using a light optical microscope. The microstructure analysis shows the uniform distribution of hybrid reinforcement throughout the matrix, and only a few clusters are found in the matrix alloyed with 15% B2N. Both pure and reinforced matrices are evaluated for the mechanical properties’ evaluation. The result shows an increment in hardness from 70.4 VHN to 96.2 VHN. Similarly, the tensile strength of the composite material is improved from 151 MPa to 192 MPa. The reason for improving strength and hardness is the uniform distribution of hybrid reinforcement in the LM6 matrix.
