Social learning, public participation and community engagement in waste management: A bibliometric analysis of trends and gaps Rony Sandra Yofa Zebua, Sunarti, Andi Wahyudi, Istiana Hermawati, Wisber Wiryanto, Asmadi Adnan, Caecilia Suprapti Dwi Takariani, Alhadi Saputra, Zaenal Abidin Cleaner Waste Systems, 2025 Public participation is key to a successful municipal waste management (MWM) system, but making it sustainable remains challenging. Social learning is one potential solution to improve and sustain public participation, as it encourages the community to become more engaged in the program through a collaborative process involving diverse actors. However, previous studies paid little attention to this topic. This study aimed to provide evidence on the development of studies on public participation and community engagement in waste management, and to further investigate the studies on social learning within collaborative systems for public participation. It employed bibliometric analysis, utilizing the public participation ladder by Arnstein, social learning theory, and the collaborative governance model as the analytical framework. Using two tools, called Visualization of Similarities viewer (VOSviewer) and Biblioshiny, this study mapped the metadata and analyzed 140 selected documents through a systematic search of the Scopus database. This study revealed some insights. First, public acceptance and identification of behavioral determinant factors have been a consistent main topic of studies, especially in developing countries, indicating a low level of participation as the focus of prior studies. In contrast, an active partnership with the government and other stakeholders throughout the planning and decision-making processes is expected to be the primary focus. Second, only a limited number of studies on waste management have analyzed the collaborative dynamic interaction and social learning process in developed country contexts more closely. Studies on other crucial aspects of collaborative governance, such as organizational design and facilitative leadership, are also lacking, despite their importance for social learning in collaborative governance. More comprehensive studies were required to be explored in future studies, including the starting conditions as an enabler of the collaborative process. This study is a novel investigation that employs a bibliometric analysis to visualize the growth of studies in the public participation context of waste management. The findings contribute, both theoretically and practically, by providing future research directions and offering insights for policymakers, NGOs, and other relevant stakeholders to develop collaborative strategies that enhance public participation in waste management sustainability. • The level of public participation study focused mainly on public acceptance and behavioral factor determinants • Only limited studies have analyzed more closely to the collaborative dynamic interaction among diverse actors in waste management initiatives and its social learning process • Studies about other crucial aspects in collaborative governance such as the organizational design, facilitative leadership and the outcomes of the social learning are also deficient
Future policies for managing ship traffic and safety in the access channel of a new nation’s capital: A case study of Indonesia Johny Malisan, Feronika Sekar Puriningsih, Edward Marpaung, Windra Priatna Humang, Muhammad Yamin Jinca, Andi Wahyudi, Dedy Arianto, Hasriwan Putra, Mutharudin Mutharudin, Novi Irawati Journal of Infrastructure Policy and Development, 2024 Indonesia has a new capital, officially known as Nusantara (IKN). The nearest access to and from IKN is through Balikpapan Bay, a confined waterway that may eventually result in traffic congestion and interfere with shipping operations. This research aims to investigate ship traffic and safety governance policies, as few researchers have previously studied this issue in the IKN waters. We collected the empirical data in four steps. Firstly, we conducted in-depth interviews and focus group discussions attended by related stakeholders, such as the Harbormaster and Port Authority, the Indonesian Maritime Court, the Navigation District Officers, SOE Port Managers, Local Government, and Shipping Companies Association. Next, we distributed questionnaires to shipping operators. Furthermore, using triangulation techniques, this research suggests the need to harmonize regulations implemented by related agencies involved in shipping activities. The last step was determining ship routes to ensure maritime safety and ship traffic efficiency. The proposed harmonization would provide port and shipping operators with business certainty in accordance with applicable laws. The research also recommended sharing authority between the IKN Authority Agency, which is responsible for the exploitation of water areas, and the Transportation Ministry, which regulates maritime traffic and safety.
