- Simplified Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control for Grid-Connected Inverters with LCL Filters: Reduced Prediction Horizon and Weighting Factors-Free Design
Adel Tatish, Kanchapogu Vaisakh
International Journal of Smart Grid, 2026
Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) has shown great promise for controlling microgrid converters. However, conventional FCS-MPC approaches applied to high-order dynamic systems, such as grid-connected converters with LCL filters, require a long prediction horizon to achieve accurate grid current tracking, resulting in increased computational burden. This paper proposes a simplified FCS-MPC strategy for grid-connected inverters with LCL filters, addressing the computational complexity and tuning challenges of conventional methods. By tracking the filter capacitor voltage instead of directly regulating grid-side or converter-side currents, the proposed approach reduces the required prediction horizon from six steps (Np=6) to three steps (Np=3), significantly lowering computational burden. This reduction, coupled with a single-objective cost function, slashes the computational time by over 300 times, from 7.8 ms to 25.3 µs on embedded hardware (400 MHz CPU), making real-time implementation feasible. A single-objective cost function eliminates the need for weighting factors, simplifying controller design and tuning. The method ensures sinusoidal current injection even under unbalanced grid conditions by exclusively utilizing the positive sequence of the PCC voltage, extracted via a discrete-time quadrature signal generator. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated through both MATLAB/Simulink simulations and experimental testing. The results demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves performance comparable to conventional FCS-MPC approaches with longer prediction horizons, maintaining a low grid-current THD of 1.7%, while offering the distinct advantages of reduced computational complexity, improved robustness against grid harmonics and voltage sags, and simpler implementation without the need for tuning weighting factors. - Enhanced Linear Quadratic Regulator-Based Strategy for Seamless Transition Between Microgrid Operation Modes
Adel Tatish, Kanchapogu Vaisakh
Iet Power Electronics, 2026
Ensuring a seamless transition between grid‐connected and islanded modes of operation in microgrids is a critical challenge due to transient disturbances during the transition between the corresponding control strategies (grid‐forming and grid‐following control strategies), affecting system stability and reliability. This paper presents an advanced control strategy that relies on a linear quadratic regulator‐based smooth transition regulator (LQR‐STR) to enhance the smoothness and reliability of microgrid mode transitions. Unlike previous LQR‐based approaches, the proposed method integrates the full control loops in the smooth regulator design, including the virtual impedance loop, and voltage and current feedforward coefficients for the grid‐forming controller, and active/reactive power control loops for the grid‐following controller. The impact of imperfect islanding detection and premature reconnection is analysed, demonstrating the robustness of the proposed method under varying transition conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated through detailed simulations in MATLAB/Simulink and through a real‐time embedded system using the NI sbRIO GPIC Evaluation Kit. The simulation and experimental results show significant improvements in reducing transient overshoots, enhancing voltage and frequency stability and ensuring reliable mode transitions. - Fuzzy Logic-Based Regulator for Seamless Transition Between Multiple Operating Modes in Inverter-Based Microgrids
Adel Tatish, Kanchapogu Vaisakh, Mohammed S. Al-Numay
IEEE Access, 2026
This paper introduces a Fuzzy Logic–based Smooth Transition Regulator (FL-STR) to enable seamless transitions between different microgrid operation modes. The proposed method is compatible with various inverter control topologies, including conventional grid-forming inverters (GFMIs), vector current control grid-following inverters (VCC-GFLIs), and PLL-less grid-following inverters. Unlike existing methods in the literature, which are limited to nonlinear inverter topologies, the proposed FL-STR offers broader applicability while reducing the implementation complexity. Specifically, it eliminates the need for detailed system modeling, complex parameter tuning, and weighting matrix design. Moreover, it is less sensitive to tuning parameters and does not rely on accurate linear state-space models, which are often unavailable for commercial inverters. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in MATLAB/Simulink for transitions between GFMIs and VCC-GFLIs, as well as between GFMIs and voltage-modulated direct power control (VMDPC) inverters. Further validation was carried out through a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL)-based real-time implementation utilizing an NI sbRIO GPIC evaluation kit with an emulated wind turbine system and a photovoltaic system. - Modeling and Performance Assessment of a Grid Connected Large Scale Photovoltaic Plant: A Case Study of Yemen
Marwan Mohammed Abdo Azazi, Kanchapogu Vaisakh, Adel Tatish
IEEE Access, 2025
Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems characterized by their widespread availability, cost effectiveness, and environmental sustainability have emerged as a promising renewable energy technology to address these challenges. In Yemen, cumulative off grid residential PV capacity increased from virtually zero in 2000 to its highest recorded level by the end of 2023, reflecting an average annual growth rate of approximately 5% since 2017. However, utility scale, grid connected PV plants are essential to further reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate associated environmental impacts. The integration of PV generation into centralized power networks and decentralized mini grids offers both substitutive and complementary benefits. This study evaluates the technical impact of integrating a 120 MW grid connected PV plant into the Aden regional electrical grid in Yemen, which operates at voltage levels of 132 kV, 33 kV, and 11 kV. A detailed network model was developed using Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP) software, and load flow analysis was performed using the Newton–Raphson iterative method. The findings demonstrate that high PV penetration reduces the active power demand from central generation sources and improves voltage stability, particularly at weaker nodes, up to a penetration level of approximately 80 MW. The results confirm that the Aden grid can accommodate high PV penetration with tangible operational benefits, whereas also highlighting the requirement for advanced grid control measures—such as smart inverters and dynamic voltage regulation devices—to ensure reliability in future expansions, including the planned scale up to 640 MW. - An Approach to Transcutaneous Inductive Power and Data Link for Implantable Biomedical Microsystems

Ssrg International Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 2024
This paper proposes a practical approach to wireless power and data communication systems for biomedical implants using an inductive power and data transfer link. The system comprises a class E power amplifier/transmitter, an Amplitude-Shift Keying (ASK) modulator, an Inductive Power and Data Link (IPDL) and an ASK demodulator. The modulation circuit comprises a capacitor and a MOSFET to switch the load of the Class-E transmitter between two states, satisfying both zero-voltage switching and derivative switching conditions, leading to higher DC to AC power transfer efficiency. This situation develops ASK data modulation in the class E transmitter. The developed IPDL contains an external class E transmitter part placed external to the human body to transfer wireless power and data to the internal receiver part (implanted device) for exciting and monitoring relevant nerves of damaged tissue. For the safety condition of the tissue, the IPDL system is operated at a selected lower carrier frequency of 4MHz, and the ASK modulator is envisioned to operate with a modulation index of 43% and a modulation rate of 4.3% with a data rate as 172Kbps. A practical IPDL system is presented with results of real-time simulation using TINA ver. 8 and MULTISIM ver12.0 software. - Energy Efficient Lighting Design for Green Building Data Center at ISRO Complex Hyderabad

- The building infrastructure has been developing in a fast and rapid mode throughout the globe. Each and every developed and developing country is building huge infrastructure for industries, software offices, roads, buildings, and other infrastructure facilities. Developing this huge infrastructure consumes a lot of natural resources, water, and energy. Consuming these natural resources more will lead to the depletion of these resources, which is a great danger for future generations. Creating sustainable buildings will save these natural resources and the environment. Hence, developing Green buildings is the need of the hour in the construction industry today [1]. In developing green buildings, energy efficiency is the key factor for sustainable infrastructure. Energy is consumed for lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning applications in the buildings. The requirement of the energy in a building can be optimized by using several techniques. This study and research focus on optimimising the requirement of energy needed for lighting in data center buildings [2]. In a building, around 25-30 % of the energy is utilized for lighting applications. This paper focuses on designing the buildings for less artificial lighting and optimizing the lighting load requirement in accordance with the green building norms. The applicable energy-efficient lighting design practices in green buildings are explored in detail. The methodology for designing the optimized energy-efficient lighting has been studied and implemented in the project. The paper eludes a practical case study of the NRSC green building infrastructure developed at the Shadnagar campus in Hyderabad. The designing of the lighting system with the help of e-Quest software has been explained to find out the most energy efficient model for the buildings. Thus, this research explains the methodology the strategies required for achieving energy-efficient lighting in green buildings. - A wireless-power and data-transfer using inductive RF link and ASK modulation

This paper aims to present a novel trans-cutanaeous, wireless and an efficient radio frequency (RF) inductive power and data link (IPDL) based on amplitude shift key (ASK) - modulator with an efficient ‘Class-E’– RF ‘power amplifier’ that is applicable to implantable medical devices (IMDs). The IPDL system comprises an external device placed on exterior to human skin to transmitting power and data to IMDs like implantable micro-systems (cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants, retinal implants, deep brain stimulators) to excite and monitor respective neural and muscular system. The entire system is designed to operate with a ‘low-band-frequency’ of 4 MHz by avoiding the problem of tissue heating. A practical model for the IPDL with results is presented. Various graphs such as frequency vs primary coil/secondary coil output are plotted and shown. Typical specifications of the exterior device, namely, the modulation-index (MI) and the modulation-rate (MR) are 40% and 4.3% respectively with a data rate of 172 Kbps. The design is simulated with electronic workbench MULTISIM 12.0 and TINA Ver 9. - Developing and Designing the Energy Efficient Model for NRSC, IMGEOS Data Center using e-Quest Software

Ssrg International Journal of Civil Engineering, 2024
More than 1/3 rd. of the energy is consumed by the buildings in the world. The construction industry has grown very rapidly over the past 3 decades and is consuming a lot of natural resources and energy. It is the need of the hour to design and develop innovative technologies that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. Developing sustainable building infrastructure mainly focuses on energy efficiency, limited use of natural resources, water conservation, and reducing emissions. Energy efficiency is the main part of sustainability. In this research, we propose a strategy for incorporating solar passive techniques to obtain energy efficiency in an ISRO Data centre by using sustainable green building technology [1]. The maximum building operation maintenance costs are due to the use of electrical energy usage. This research study explains the design strategies to be considered for making the building energy efficient. The study explains the details of the various construction materials along with their technical properties used in the buildings for achieving energy efficiency. ASHRAE has set up the baseline model for energy efficiency in the buildings. We used e-Quest simulation software for finding out the most energy efficient model for the project. Different scenarios with different parameters are evaluated by using the e-Quest software and are compared with the ASHRAE baseline model to find out the most energy efficient scenario. Thus, this research explains the design strategies and the methodology to be adopted for building sustainable and energy-efficient data centers. - A New Multilevel Inverter Topology for Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Configuration
Prasad Raju K S S, Vaisakh K
Ssrg International Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 2023
Inverters with innovative modular symmetrical and asymmetrical topologies were introduced in this study. Either an isolated DC source, an additive or subtractive combination with other DC sources is used to produce the multilevel output. This study presents a novel approach (an alternate quinary sequence) for selecting magnitude input dc voltage sources. Phase Opposition Disposition (POD) pulse width modulation approach is used for pulse generation to the suggested topology. Regarding cost function, switch count and DC source count, the suggested topology performs better than a few current topologies. Switching states were derived to develop 5-Level, 9-Level, and 49-Level suggested topology. The proposed topology's validity is verified by simulation, and the prototype was developed for nine-level output voltage. - REDUCED COMPONENTS MULTILEVEL INVERTER TOPOLOGY
