A Grounded Theory Exploration of the Cognitive Effects of Multimedia-Based Instruction on EFL Learners’ Listening Skills Abd. Rahman, Nurdin Noni, Andi Anto Patak, Sukmawati Tono Palangngan, Muhaiminah Akib Theory and Practice in Language Studies, 2025 A deeper understanding of how multimedia-based instruction interacts with the cognitive processes of EFL learners during listening tasks is needed to maximize its effectiveness. By employing a grounded theory approach, this study aimed to develop a theoretical framework that explains how multimedia-based instruction influences EFL learners' cognitive processes during listening tasks. Two higher education institutions were chosen based on the consideration that they have experienced the use of multimedia in teaching and learning EFL listening skills. Twenty-four students were selected for a theoretical sampling with an open sampling pattern to help researchers form the best theory. To enhance the understanding of the phenomenon, participant observation and semi-structured interviews served as the primary data collection techniques in this study. The researchers directly observed the process of teaching listening and then proceeded with a semi-structured interview. This study had three stages of the data analysis process: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The results indicated the cognitive effects of multimedia-based instruction on students' listening skills include improved comprehension and enhanced knowledge retention. It also developed a theory that links educational technology, cognitive psychology, and language acquisition through data analysis using the grounded theory method. This hypothesis implies that multimedia facilitates complex mental processes and enables students to process information effectively, understand it better, and retain it in their long-term memory.
Students’ Perceptions of AI-Based Instruction in Academic Writing Course at an Indonesian Private University Muhammad Astrianto Setiadi, Muhammad Basri, Geminastiti Sakkir, Ahmed Sardi, Abd. Rahman International Journal of Language Education, 2025 This study aims to find out how students perceive the integration of AI technology in learning academic writing. This qualitative case study examined the perceptions of 27 English students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar regarding the use of AI tools in their academic writing development. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, providing rich insights into students' attitudes, perceived benefits, and potential drawbacks of AI-driven instruction. The findings of this study show that there are two types of perceptions towards the application of AI in writing learning: Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Perceived usefulness can be observed through several indicators, including improved academic writing quality, increased efficiency in writing activities, enhanced learning, better grades, and meeting writing requirements. Furthermore, perceived ease of use also has six indicators, namely ease of understanding, ease of use, clarity and understandability, flexibility and adaptability, minimal effort required, and user-friendliness.
The Ways to Teach Children in Decision Making based on Parents Educational Level Dr. Muslimah, Abd. Rahman, Hamd anah, Dr. Mazrur, Dr.S. Muhammad Tang International Journal of Early Childhood Special Education, 2021 Every parent worldwide wants their children to make decisions in dealing with problems and determine their future career; however, various things can influence them in making decisions during their growing up process. This study aims to find out how to train children aged 3-7 years to make decisions based on parents educational level in the City of Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, that is because teaching children in making decisions at a young age is an effort to teach kids to think ahead for the great choices in their lifetime. A qualitative descriptive design with a case study method was used to obtain information. Some eight families were chosen as the subject in this study based on the purposive sampling technique. The collection of the data is through observation and in-depth interviews. The researcher employed the triangulation technique to validate data by involving multiple sources such as interviewing the informant parents, teacher, and friends and observation to data gained from the interview. Data analysis is carried out by collecting data, reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. Parents with a low educational level tend to impose their children on decision making. Furthermore, parents with a middle educational level generally provide limited decisions and choices to their children—meanwhile, parents with higher educational levels training their children by promoting two-way communication.
