Strengthening health professions education during war: a multi-institutional case study of physical therapy programs in Ukraine Olha Kovalchuk, Larisa Hoffman, Shala Cunningham, Kateryna Tymruk-Skoropad, Olena Lazarieva, Vira Rokoshevska, Tetiana Odynets, Tetyana Baryshok, Yaryna Kolisnyk, Lyubov Tsizh, Irina Zharova, Tetiana Dereka, Rachael Lowe BMC Medical Education, 2026 Recent assessments of Ukraine’s wartime health and rehabilitation systems highlight critical shortages in trained rehabilitation personnel. In response, Ukraine has undergone rapid expansion of rehabilitation services through health system reform. These changes created an urgent need to strengthen physical therapy education and align curricula with national and international competency standards. Despite urgent workforce needs, limited evidence exists describing structured, competency-based program reform models for health professions education in active conflict settings. This study provides a feasible framework for reflective educational reform in crisis-affected contexts. This multiple-case design with cross-case synthesis describes implementation of the Academic Program Reflection Tool (APRT) across four Ukrainian universities offering physical therapy education. Program leadership teams engaged in a two-year reflective review process involving self-assessment, curriculum mapping, mentoring, and in-person workshops. Two members of each leadership team attended the in-person workshops. Data sources included institutional self-assessments, revised program documents, worksheets, and workshop transcripts. Findings were analyzed descriptively to identify themes related to curriculum development, assessment practices, faculty capacity, student progression, and resource constraints. Institutions reported improved clarity in program philosophy, learning outcomes, and alignment with competency frameworks. Curriculum mapping revealed gaps in areas such as treatment for conflict-related injuries, global health, and continuing professional development. Participants identified limitations in assessment validity, reliance on lecture-based teaching, variability in clinical education practices, faculty shortages, and constrained institutional resources. The APRT process supported development of quality improvement plans and strengthened local leadership capacity for ongoing program reform. This case study demonstrates the feasibility and educational value of structured program review in strengthening physical therapy education within a low-resource, conflict-affected setting. The APRT provided a framework for aligning curricula with competency-based education principles while supporting local ownership of reform. Findings may inform efforts in rehabilitation and health professions education in other low resource countries.
The research clinical and instrumental methods of examination of athletes related to the process of intervertebral disk degeneration and stenosis Valeria Tyshchenko, Tymur Ksenzov, Tetiana Odynets, Tetiana Bogoslav, Artur Ksenzov, Ivan Hlukhov, Kateryna Drobot Wiadomosci Lekarskie Warsaw Poland 1960, 2024 AimTo determine the level structure of the graph model of the system of clinical and instrumental indicators of athletes with herniated intervertebral discs complicated by spinal stenosis, and to determine the regression model for these indicators.Material and methodsThis observational study involved 64 athletes (14 – rugby players, 16 – handball players, 15 – basketball players, 19 – football players) with intervertebral disc herniation, complicated by stenosis of spinal canal. Research methods: visual method to evaluate the likelihood of a data set's normal distribution; correlation and regression analysis; method for determining the ordinal function of a graph through the application of an adjacency matrix, specifically utilizing Demucron's algorithm. This process is accompanied using a topological sorting of the graph.ResultsThe results showed the lack of correlation between age and VAS, muscle strength and VAS, as well as VAS and the channel space; little feedback between age and the channel space; weak positive relationship between size of herniated intervertebral disc had a with the length of the illness. The data showed, strong feedback was observed for hernia size and the channel space, hernia size and muscle strength, the channel space, and length of the illness.ConclusionsThe evaluation on the complexity and depth of the interconnections between clinical and instrumental metrics in athletes was conducted. The hierarchical organization within the graphical representation was ascertained. A predictive regression model delineating the correlations between clinical and instrumental variables in patients suffering from herniated intervertebral discs, with the complication of spinal canal stenosis was established.
Features of choreographic training for athletes in technical and aesthetic sports Journal of Physical Education and Sport, 2023 Purpose:The aim of this study is to uncover the significance and distinctive features of choreographic training for athletes engaged in technical and aesthetic sports.Materials and methods: The research approach included theoretical (theoretical analysis and generalization of data from scientific and methodical sources and information from Internet resources, as well as analysis, synthesis, and comparison) and empirical (pedagogical observation and expert evaluation) methods. Results: The research highlighted common features that unite sports and choreographic art.In addition, this study revealed the importance of choreographic training in sports for achieving mastery in performing competitive exercises. The key features of choreographic training can be outlined as follows: a lack of time for choreographic work, early specialization of children, a systematic increase in complexity of competitive compositions, regular updates to competition rules and methods of conducting classes, involvement in competitive activities, the use of specific means to develop expressiveness, sports style, and amplitude in performing sports movements, a variety of choreography lessons, and inversion. The identified features of choreographic training of athletes, which significantly affect the learning and improvement of exercise techniques, will allow the acquired knowledge to be applied in practical work. Conclusion: On the basis of the analysis of literary sources, the content of choreographic training programs for children's sports schools in technical and aesthetic sports, choreographic school programs, specialist interviews, expert evaluations of sports compositions by finalists of European and world championships and cups, and pedagogical observations, this study identified the significance and peculiarities of choreographic training for athletes in technical and aesthetic sports.Additionally, it characterized common features in the training processes of athletes and representatives of the dance genre. These commonalities include public presentation of their work at the discretion of the audience and judges, improvement of the body's functional capabilities, harmonious physical development, increased discipline and responsibility, enhancement of physical qualities, accuracy, and precision in performing motor actions, and the use of similar means and methods in teaching and upbringing.Despite some similarities, sports and art fundamentally differ from each other, and this distinction significantly affects the training processes of athletes and dancers.
Comparative effectiveness of Yoga and Pilates intervention on respiratory function of patients with breast cancer Tetiana Odinets, Yuriy Briskin, Nataliia Leshchii, Valeria Tyshchenko, Oksana Ikkert, Anzhelika Yefremova Revista Andaluza De Medicina Del Deporte, 2022 Objective: Most modern breast cancer treatments are shown to be effective in terms of survival but lead to side effects such as dysfunction of the upper limb, lymphedema, pain syndrome, plexitis, сardiotoxicity, fatigue, and pulmonary complications. Applied radiotherapy enhances the number of side effects that patients with breast cancer experience over a long period. The aim of this study was to compare effectiveness of Hatha Yoga and Pilates interventions on respiratory function in patients with breast cancer. Methods: 95 women completed the interventions and were included in the final analysis. The participants, staged I-II, were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Group A (n = 48, 57.53 ± 1.92 years) received Hatha Yoga intervention and group B (n = 47, 58.00 ± 1.27 years) received Pilates intervention. Both programs were conducted for 12 weeks, with three 60-min sessions per week. Spirometry was used to measure pre- and post-intervention functional capacity of the respiratory system. Results: Significant differences (p<0.05) were found in Vital Capacity, Forced Vital Capacity, Peak Expiratory Flow, Maximum Expiratory Flow25, Expiratory Reserve Volume and Maximal Voluntary Ventilation in Hatha Yoga group compared with Pilates group. There was no significant difference between both groups in Force Expiratory Volume and Maximum Expiratory Flow50 (p>0,05) Conclusions: Hatha Yoga and Pilates interventions are both effective in respiratory function, but Hatha Yoga turns out more beneficial.
Effectiveness of yoga intervention enhanced by progressive muscular relaxation on pain in women after breast cancer surgery Tetiana Odynets, Yuriy Briskin, Valentina Todorova, Tetiana Pasichna, Anzhelika Yefremova Physiotherapy Quarterly, 2021 Introduction The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of yoga intervention enhanced by progressive muscular relaxation on pain in women after breast cancer surgery Methods Overall, 84 patients after Madden mastectomy were eligible for this study. After the exclusion of 7 women, 77 participants were randomly allocated to group A (<i>n</i> = 38), receiving progressive muscular relaxation and visualization exercises in addition to yoga intervention, and group B (<i>n</i> = 39), receiving yoga intervention only. McGill Pain Questionnaire and visual analogue scale were used to evaluate pain at baseline and after the 4-week intervention. Results Most of the investigated pain characteristics in both studied groups steadily improved during the 4-week rehabilitation. However, the 4-week monitoring indicated that using progressive muscular relaxation and visualization exercises in addition to the yoga intervention was more effective for reducing self-reported pain in women after Madden mastectomy. The post-intervention level of pain reported in the visual analogue scale and present pain intensity were statistically lower in group A compared with group B by 0.99 points (<i>p</i> < 0.05) and 1.68 points (<i>p</i> < 0.05), respectively. Conclusions Performing progressive muscular relaxation and visualization exercises in addition to yoga intervention helped reduce pain in women after Madden mastectomy.
Effect of hatha yoga intervention on cardiovascular system in women after breast cancer surgery Tetiana Odynets, Yuriy Briskin, Borys Dolinsky, Iryna Osipova, Tetiana Pasichna, Anzhelika Yefremova Physiotherapy Quarterly, 2021 Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the effects of 2 different exercise regimens on cardiovascular fitness in women with breast cancer. Methods A total of 110 women consented to take part in the study but only 102 met the inclusion criteria and were involved (8 patients did not meet the research criteria and were excluded); 95 women completed the interventions and were included in the final analysis. The patients’ mean age was 57.53 ± 1.92 years for group A and 58.00 ± 1.27 years for group B. The participants were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Group A (<i>n</i> = 48) received hatha yoga intervention and group B (<i>n</i> = 47) received Pilates intervention for 3 months. Impedance cardiography was used to measure pre- and post-intervention functional capacity of the cardiovascular system. Results Post-intervention impact was observed for both intervention approaches, but better improvement was noted in the group of hatha yoga than that of Pilates. The actual values of stroke volume and left ventricular power were significantly higher in group A compared with group B by 6.05 ml/beat (<i>p</i> < 0.05) and 0.19 W (<i>p</i> < 0.05), respectively; the relative values were correspondingly better by 6.22% (<i>p</i> < 0.05) and 10.71% (<i>p</i> < 0.05). Conclusions Hatha yoga and Pilates interventions are both effective in improving cardiovascular function, but hatha yoga turns out more beneficial.
The effect of hatha yoga on range of motion and strength in patients with breast cancer Tetiana Odynets, Yuriy Briskin, Borys Dolinsky, Valentina Todorova, Pavlo Vindiuk, Anzhelika Yefremova, Petro Rybalko Physiotherapy Quarterly, 2021 Introduction The study investigated the effects of hatha yoga on range of motion and strength in women with breast cancer. Methods A total of 93 patients completed the study. Their mean age was 57.53 ± 1.92 years in the yoga group and 58.10 ± 1.17 years in the control group. The yoga group (<i>n</i> = 48) received hatha yoga intervention for 3 months; the control group (<i>n</i> = 45) received current best practice care, including recommendation about compression sleeves, skin protection, and care of the affected arm. The control group was offered hatha yoga intervention after the final measurement. The outcomes were dynamometry and shoulder range of motion to analyse the functional capacity of the affected upper limb. Results After 3 months of performing hatha yoga, the active shoulder range of motion improved significantly in the affected limb and was significantly higher than in the control group: by 76.76° for flexion (<i>p</i> < 0.001), by 18.92° for extension (<i>p</i> < 0.001), by 80.21° for abduction (<i>p</i> < 0.001), by 33.29° for internal rotation (<i>p</i> < 0.001), by 27.36° for external rotation (<i>p</i> < 0.01). Strength for wrist flexion and power index in the affected limb improved by 6.0 kg (<i>p</i> < 0.001) and 8.25% (<i>p</i> < 0.001), respectively, in the yoga group and only by 1.1 kg (<i>p</i> > 0.05) and 1.44% (<i>p</i> > 0.05) in the control group. Conclusions Hatha yoga is more beneficial than usual care for improving active shoulder range of motion and upper limb strength.
Cardiopulmonary function in breast cancer patients versus healthy control women Tetiana Odynets, Yuriy Briskin, Oksana Ikkert, Valentina Todorova, Anzhelika Yefremova Physiotherapy Quarterly, 2020 Introduction The study investigated cardiopulmonary function in breast cancer patients versus healthy control women. Methods Overall, 115 women after breast cancer surgery and 50 healthy controls were included. The outcome measures were spirographic and hemodynamic parameters. Results Most of the investigated parameters in breast cancer patients were significantly lower than in healthy women. The actual vital capacity (VC) was significantly lower by 0.34 l (<i>p</i> < 0.001), forced vital capacity (FVC) by 0.25 l (<i>p</i> < 0.001), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) by 0.26 l (<i>p</i> < 0.001), peak expiratory flow (PEF) by 0.95 l/s (<i>p</i> < 0.001), maximum expiratory flow25 (MEF25) by 0.98 l/s (<i>p</i> < 0.001), maximum expiratory flow50 (MEF50) by 0.65 l/s (<i>p</i> < 0.001), expiratory reserve volume by 0.48 l (p < 0.001), maximal voluntary ventilation by 22.73 l/min (<i>p</i> < 0.001). The percentage of predicted values of VC, FVC, FEV1, PEF, MEF25, and MEF50 was lower by 9.93% (<i>p</i> < 0.001), 7.39% (<i>p</i> < 0.001), 8.87% (<i>p</i> < 0.001), 15.7% (<i>p</i> < 0.001), 18.09% (<i>p</i> < 0.001), and 15.96% (<i>p</i> < 0.001), respectively. As for the cardiovascular system, the actual stroke volume was higher in the control group compared with the main group by 12.20 ml/beat (<i>p</i> < 0.001), stroke index by 8.85 ml/beat/m2 (<i>p</i> < 0.001), cardiac output by 0.87 l/min (<i>p</i> < 0.001), left ventricular work by 0.96 g · m/beat (<i>p</i> < 0.001), LVP by 0.26 W (<i>p</i> < 0.001). Conclusions Cancer treatment negatively affected most cardiorespiratory parameters. The results support the need for physiotherapy intervention in breast cancer patients after treatment.
