Retrofitted conversion of a Maruti Alto gasoline engine to compressed natural gas for sustainable mobility Rajesh Kumar Pandey, Shankar Kumar, Y. C. Sharma, Rajiv Varshney, Ashok Kumar Yadav Scientific Reports, 2026 Retrofitting existing internal combustion engine vehicles to operate on cleaner fuels offers a practical pathway toward reducing urban emissions during the transition to sustainable mobility. This study experimentally investigates the feasibility of converting a 796 cc Maruti Alto multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) spark-ignition engine to operate exclusively on compressed natural gas (CNG) without petrol as a pilot fuel. The influence of iridium spark plug electrode gaps (0.5, 0.6, and 0.8 mm) on ignition stability, engine performance, and exhaust emissions was evaluated using a computerized test bench equipped with an eddy current dynamometer. Experimental results indicate that the 0.6 mm electrode gap provides the most stable combustion and minimum misfire tendency under lean CNG operation. Compared with conventional petrol operation, carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions decreased by approximately 42% and 38%, respectively, while brake power declined by about 4-5% due to the lower energy density of gaseous fuel. ANOVA analysis confirmed the statistical significance of these variations (p < 0.05). The results demonstrate that optimized ignition parameters enable stable CNG-only operation in compact MPFI engines, supporting engine retrofitting as a cost-effective strategy for cleaner urban transportation.
Performance Improvement of Water-Lubricated Sliding Tribo-Pairs of Nylon Fiber-Based UHMWPE Composite and 304 Stainless Steel Using Surface Microgrooves/Textures Sandip Kumar Nayak, Manas Ranjan Pattnayak, Sujeet K. Sinha, Raj Kumar Pandey Journal of Tribology, 2026 This article presents experimental and numerical investigations pertaining to the tribological performance improvement of the water-lubricated tribological pairs formed between a nylon fiber-based ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite and SAE 304 stainless steel under sliding motion using surface microgrooves and textures. In this exploration, linear and crossed microgrooves and spherical dimples in textures have been employed at the interfacing surface of composite pins. All the experimental results have been produced using a pin-on-disc configuration at different operating parameters as per the standard ASTM G99-05. Reductions in the values of the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear-rate of the composite have been found in the presence of transverse microgrooves at the pin surface as compared to the conventional case. A mathematical model involving deterministic microgrooves/dimples and stochastic distribution of asperities has been employed to generate the numerical results to validate the experimental findings and develop the overall confidence in the study. A good correlation between experimental and numerical results has been achieved.
Friction and Wear Studies of Nylon and Polyethylene Fiber-Reinforced UHMWPE Composites under Dry Sliding Sandip Kumar Nayak, Sujeet Kumar Sinha, Raj Kumar Pandey Journal of Tribology, 2026 Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)-based composites reinforced with chopped nylon and polyethylene (PE) fibers were fabricated through the compression moulding technique to study their tribological and bulk mechanical properties. The amount of each fiber was varied from 2 wt% to 12 wt%. The tribological performances and the effects of fiber loading on the performance of UHMWPE composites were studied. The coefficient of friction values of UHMWPE composites decreased up to a fiber loading of 8 wt%, and beyond this, they increased. The composites containing nylon fibers (10 wt%) were observed to have superior mechanical and tribological properties compared to those containing PE fibers.
Coco-mixed biodiesel as a novel knock mitigation for CI engines: A comprehensive performance and emission analysis Rajesh Kumar Pandey, Shailendra K Shukla, Prashant Baredar, Rajiv Varshney, Shankar Kumar Fuels for Sustainable Transportation Advances and Applications, 2025 Experiments were conducted using coco-mixed biodiesel blends, and their results were compared with the characteristics of conventional diesel fuel. A review of the existing research literature indicates that only a limited number of studies have explored dual biodiesel mixed blends in diesel engines, leaving significant scope for further investigation. This paper emphasizes the potential of utilizing various biodiesels in dual-mixed forms with diesel fuel and its blends. Since different biodiesel fuels exhibit distinct effects on engine performance and emissions, it was observed that coconut biodiesel possesses cetane-enhancing properties. The study evaluates the performance and emission characteristics of various dual biodiesel mixed blends, specifically a combination of jatropha biodiesel and coconut biodiesel, when used with diesel in a stationary, single-cylinder, four-stroke, direct injection, variable compression ratio (VCR) diesel research engine. Methyl esters of jatropha (JBD) and coconut (CBD) oils were tested in different blend ratios. The JCDB10 blend (comprising 90% diesel, 5% jatropha biodiesel, and 5% coconut biodiesel by volume) and JCDB20 blend (80% diesel, 10% jatropha biodiesel, and 10% coconut biodiesel by volume) demonstrated superior brake thermal efficiency and lower brake-specific fuel consumption compared to other dual biodiesel blends (JCDB30, JCDB40, and JCDB50). Additionally, the emission characteristics of JCDB10 and JCDB20 were found to be better than those of other blends and were closer to the values observed for conventional diesel fuel.
Comparison of fatigue life behavior between deep groove radial ball bearings possessing conventional and micro-grooved outer races operating under dry condition Bansidhar Gouda, N Tandon, RK Pandey, CK Babu Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part C Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2024 A comparative study on fatigue life of deep groove radial ball bearings possessing conventional and micro-grooved outer races by experimental investigation is discussed in this paper. This research has been carried out to explore and understand the fatigue life of a micro-grooved ball bearing (MGB) with a circumferential micro-groove on outer race by conducting long duration tests under dry condition (i.e. wiping out the applied grease from the races by using tissue paper and lint free cloth) and compare the results with same size SKF BB1B 420206 conventional bearing (CB) at the identical operating parameters. Frictional torque (FT), bulk temperature, and overall vibration level of the test bearings (CB and MGB) at the maximum load zone have been measured at 800 N ( pH = 1.7 GPa) radial load and 1800 rpm (4.2 m/s) for the entire duration (7.8 million revolutions) of the experiments. Comparison of the surface conditions of the bearing components by means of the captured scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, roundness and deviation in profile of the races measured by co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM), and photographs captured before and after the experiment indicates lesser damage of the MGB components as compared to the conventional cases. Moreover, the initiation of fatigue failure in CBs is faster as compared to the MGBs for the same test condition, indicating longer bearing life in MGBs as compared to the CBs.
