Experimental design for determining wear resistance of chisel plough blades Najm Mttanish, Sameer Khalaf Fayyadh Tribology and Materials, 2026 Abrasive wear is one of the most critical problems encountered by tillage tools, as it significantly affects their efficiency and increases production costs. This study experimentally investigated the wear behaviour of three chisel plough blades made of steel with different chemical compositions, available in the local market of different origins. The experiment was conducted using a soil bin at 19 rpm speed, 100 mm depth and 30° penetration angle, in dry sliding conditions for 30 hours. Results showed that the highest cumulative wear reached 9.34 g and the highest wear rate reached 0.226 g/h for blade B3. In contrast, blade B1 experienced the lowest cumulative wear of 5.49 g and the lowest wear rate of 0.130 g/h over the same period. The wear rate initially was the highest, then gradually decreased and remained approximately constant towards the end of the test. The results also indicated that dimensional reduction had occurred. Blade B1 showed the lowest reduction (length and width), reaching 3.76 mm (3.6 %) and 0.85 mm (1.2 %), respectively, while blade B3 showed the greatest reduction, reaching 4.9 mm (4.7 %) and 1.75 mm (2.5 %), respectively. However, the thickness reduction for each blade varied with its location. The blade tip showed the most significant thickness reduction, followed by the outer and inner edges.
EVALUATION OF MICROSTRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES RESULTING FROM GAS NITRIDING PROCESS FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF STEEL Faras Q. Mohammed, Ibrahim Abd L-Kareem Ahmed, Sameer Khalaf Fyayyadh International Journal of Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 2025 This work investigates the effect of the gas nitriding process on the surface layer microstructure and mechanical properties for steel 37, tool steel X155CrVMo12-1 and stainless steel 316L. Nitriding was conducted at a temperature of 550 °C for 2 hours during the first stage and at 750 °C for 4 hours during the second stage. SEM and X-ray diffraction tests were performed to evaluate the microstructural features and the major phases formed after surface treatment. SEM and X-ray diffraction tests were performed to assess the microstructural features and the primary phases formed after surface treatment. The new secondary precipitates were identified as γ′-Fe4N, ε (Fe2–3N), and α-Fe, exhibiting an uneven chain-like pattern within columnar grains. A significant increase in the nitride layer thickness (34.4 µm) was achieved for X155 compared to AISI 316L and steel 37. Also, Gas nitriding caused a significant increase in hardness at the first stage for X 155 tool steel and AISI316L steel with hardness percentage enhancement of 0.87%(655HV) and 0.28% (219HV) respectively, while for steel37 samples the hardness reached its maximum value of 340HV for the second nitriding stage with hardness percentage enhancement of 0.78%. There was no significant improvement in surface hardness after second nitriding stages for X155 and AISI 316L steels. The effects of time and gas flow rate during the process were particularly evident on hardness values, especially after the first stage.
Corrosion Resistance Enhancement for Low Carbon Steel by Gas Phase Coating Sameer K. Fayyadh Journal of Mechanical Engineering, 2023 Corrosion Resistance Enhancement for low carbon steel is very important to extend its life service, the coating process is one of the methods which can using to achieve this, and it's the most important in surface treatments to improve the properties of metals and alloys surfaces such as corrosion resistance. In this work, low carbon steel was nitrided and coated with nano zinc using gas phase coating technical, to enhance the resistance of corrosion. The process included adding two layers. The first, a nitride layer, was added by precipitating nitrogen (N) gas, and the second, a zinc (Zn) layer, was added by precipitating Zn. The process of precipitating was carried out at different periods (5, 10, and 15 minutes). Scan electron microstructure (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and corrosion tests were carried out. The SEM and XRD results showed a new microstructure with the emergence of new phases (C3N4, Zn(N3)2, and γN). Also, the results of the corrosion test showed a significant improvement in corrosion resistance through a reduction in the corrosion rate (CR) and corrosion current density (icorr) which reached (1.598x10-3 mmpy) and (1.422x10-7 Amp/cm2) respectively, for coated samples, compared with 1.803×10-1 and 1.604x10-5, respectively, for the base metal. also found an appreciable increase in corrosion protection efficiency (CPE), which reached 99.11%.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Laser Surface Melting by Using Enthalpy Method Abbas S. Alwan, Sameer K. Fayyadh, Majid H. Ismaiel Iop Conference Series Materials Science and Engineering, 2020 Abstract In this study, experimental and numerical applied of heat distribution due to pulsed Nd: YAG laser surface melting. Experimental side was consists of laser parameters are, pulse duration1.3 ms , wavelength 1064nm, laser energies 1.5, 2. 6 and 4.3 J, laser beam diameter is 0.6 mm and spot diameter 0.78 mm was applied a low carbon steel type St37 with a dimension 10, 10, 3 mm, length, width and thickness respectively. Numerical analysis side consist of a mathematical model and calculating a thermal cycle by using equation in the enthalpy method applied to determine the cooling rate in fusion zone. The simulation by using the enthalpy method, applied on conduction heat transfer to estimate the cooling rate model in fusion zone and heat affected zones. Cooling rates models are helping to estimate the microstructure and micro hardness distribution in fusion and heat affected zones. The complication of the heat transfer in laser surface melting process, because at in rapid solidification, therefore the enthalpy model is more appropriate for this case. The result shows that increases of laser energy lead to decrease cooling rates and increase width and penetration of fusion zone, also decrease micro hardness in fusion zone and we found an increase in the pool size of fusion and heat affected zones.
