This study aims to assess the antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and behavioral effects of the essential oil of L. mairei var. antiatlantica . The antioxidant potential was measured using DPPH, β-carotene-linoleic acid, ABTS, FRAP, and TAC assays. As for the antimicrobial effect, the antibacterial effect was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC6538), Escherichia coli (ATCC25922), Klebsiella pneumoniae (LMG20218), and Salmonella enterica (LMG7233), while the antifungal effect was monitored against Aspergillus flavus . The repellent and antifeedant effects were evaluated against Tribolium castaneum, Tribolium confusum, and Tenebrio molitor. As for the in silico study, molecular docking was performed using the two major compounds of the EO, carvacrol and carvacrol methyl ether against bacterial (DNA gyrase MurA) and fungal targets (Lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase and UDP-GlcNAc pyrophosphorylase). Regarding the antioxidant effect, the IC 50 values were 3.32, 1.43, and 1.44 mg/mL in the DPPH, β-carotene-linoleic acid, and ABTS assays, respectively, while the EC 50 values in the FRAP and TAC assays were 2.16 and 2.17 mg/mL, respectively. Regarding the antimicrobial effect, L. mairei var. antiatlantica EO exhibited strong inhibition against all bacterial strains, with the lowest MIC (0.078 mg/mL) recorded for S. enterica. Additionally, strong mycelial growth inhibition was observed against A. flavus, with IC 50 values of 19.52 and 27.36 μL/mL after 72 and 96 h, respectively. In terms of repellent efficiency, the highest percentages of repellency (PR) were observed for T. molitor , with 98% and 90% recorded after 4 and 24 h, respectively. As for the antifeedant effect, 95% and 98% were the highest feeding deterrence index (FDI) percentages recorded in the case of T. molitor exposed to 0.48 and 0.96μL/pellet, respectively. The molecular docking results revealed that the highest affinity was recorded between carvacrol methyl ether and the two fungal targets Lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase (−7.3 kcal/mol) and UDP-GlcNAc pyrophosphorylase (−7.3 kcal/mol) against −7.2 and −7.0 kcal/mol in the case of carvacrol. These multifaceted effects highlight the potential of this EO as a natural, green alternative for biodeterioration control. • Lavandula mairei var. antiantlatica showed multiple bioactivities. • It has strong antioxidant power, demonstrated by DPPH, FRAP, ABTS, TAC, and β-carotene-linoleic acid assays. • High effectiveness against four bacterial strains, especially Salmonella enterica. • LMEO exhibits potent fumigant toxicity against Aspergillus flavus. • LMEO shows clear feeding deterrence and repellency against three stored product pests.

Morocco is widely known for its biodiversity in flora, notably medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP). These plants are widely distributed across the country in different climates, latitudes, and altitudes, and have been reported for various biological activities. This review aims to showcase the insecticidal and behavioral effects of Moroccan essential oils (EO) extracted from different plant families against insect pests. All eligible studies were retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using ‘Essential oil” and “Insect*” as keywords where 11400 articles were found and only 58 studies met the aim of this review. The analysis of articles retrieved from Scopus and Web of Science revealed a strong dominance of EOs extracted from the Lamiaceae family, where Mentha pulegium and Rosmarinus officinalis appear as the most studied species. In terms of Insects, the Coleoptera order was the most species evaluated for different bioassays, where Callosobruchus maculatus and Tribolium castaneum were the most studied species. In terms of bioactivities, Moroccan EOs exhibited a potent insecticidal activity via fumigation, contact, ingestion, and topical application. These EOs also affected the behavior of insects, leading to repellent, feeding deterrent, and anti-settling effects. Besides, this review highlights the impact of several factors on reported bioactivities. These factors can be related to EOs such as harvest period, geographical distribution, plant part used, and others related to the insects, such as insect species, developmental stages, and sex of adults. In brief, the diversity of EOs extracted from Moroccan Plants shows a promising capacity for the development of sustainable, natural, and harmless solutions for the control of pests.
  • Impact of essential oils on enzymes activity, reserve products, biomarkers, and gene expression of Tribolium castaneum

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C Toxicology and Pharmacology, 2025
Essential oils (EOs) are concentrated volatiles renowned for their strong fumigant, contact, feeding deterrence, and repellent effects. These oils can disrupt vital functions and the activity of essential enzymes in major stored product pests like Tribolium castaneum . Hence, the study of the physiological effects of these EOs can provide a better understanding of the impact of EOs and propose new strategies for the control of this pest. Therefore, this review aims to review available data regarding the potential impact of EOs on T. castaneum enzyme activities, biomarkers, gene expression, and transcriptomic profile. Articles retrieved provide interesting findings regarding the activity of digestive enzymes (α-amylase, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase) detoxification enzymes (cytochrome P450 monooxygenase, esterase, glutathione S-transferase), antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase) and acetylcholinesterase, ATPase, in adults and larvae exposed to different EOs. Moreover, some articles evaluated the content reserve products (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates) and biomarkers linked to stress (reactive oxygen species), lipid peroxidation (conjugated diene, malondialdehyde), and antioxidant system (reduced and oxidized glutathione). Other molecular aspects were also evaluated, including transcriptomics and gene expression, to assess the physiological interactions after exposure to EOs. • Essential oils (EOs) exhibited biochemical and molecular effects in Tribolium castaneum • EOs induced a significant increase in antioxidant and detoxification enzymes • EOs disrupted the activity of acetylcholinesterase while impacting digestion and reserve products • EOs increased biomarkers and impacted gene expression and transcriptomics of essential enzymes

The study aims to evaluate the behavioral and insecticidal effects of Ruta angustifolia EO (RAEO) against larvae and adults of a major pest insect, Tribolium castaneum. RAEO exhibited a strong repellency against both adults and larvae where percentages as high as 74 and 72 % of PR (Percentage of Repellency) were recorded respectively, at 0.47 μL/cm2 after 2 h. Regarding the antifeedant bioassay, no feeding deterrence was recorded in adults while an increase in appetite was registered in larvae exhibiting −80 % of FDI recorded at 0.2 μL/pellet. In terms of feeding preference, the response significantly depended on the developmental stage (F=97.19, P<0.05) and larvae were attracted to treated pellets recording percentages of 84 and 73 % of PI (Preference index) after 5 and 30 min at 0.05 μL/pellet; on the other hand, adults expressed a repulsive behavior at 0.2 μL/pellet with a PI of −81.1 (20 min), and −69.2 % (30 min). Regarding topical application toxicity, a significant difference was observed between larvae and adults (p<0.05 F=174.56). The study promotes the use of RAEO as a repellent and bioinsecticide for the control of larvae and adults of T. castaneum.
