Structurally Modulating the Upconversion Emission and Superparamagnetism in KLa(Gd)F4:Er3+/Yb3+ Nanoparticles Ib Singh Deo, Gaddam Vijaya Prakash, Mohini Gupta Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 2026 Compositional tuning in KLa(Gd)F4:RE3+ nanoparticles reveals a strong correlation among crystal phase, upconversion emission, and magnetic response. In the systematic compositions of KLa(0.79–x)GdxF4:1% Er3+/20% Yb3+ (x = 0–0.5), the progressive Gd3+ substitution induces a transformation from a cubic to a hexagonal crystal phase. This phase evolution governs the upconversion photoluminescence under 980 nm excitation, producing pronounced color switching from yellow to red emissions. The nanoparticles simultaneously exhibit composition-dependent magnetic behavior, transitioning from paramagnetism at room-temperature to superparamagnetism at 5 K, with the fully hexagonal composition (x = 0.50) reaching a saturation magnetization of 105.74 emu g–1. Electron paramagnetic resonance confirms that higher Gd3+ content strengthens magnetic interactions between neighboring Gd3+ ions. The present comprehensive understanding of structural, upconversion emission and magnetic features enable the rational design of multifunctional lanthanide nanomaterials with implications for bioimaging, theranostics, and optoelectronic technologies.
Unusual Nonlinear Optical Absorption Dispersion in a:SiNxAperiodic Photonic Structures Albin Kuriakose, Pankaj Srivastava, G Vijaya Prakash ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, 2026 The strong confinement of electromagnetic fields in photonic crystals influences light–matter interactions and is utilized for the generation, control, and manipulation of light at desired frequency bands. Here we demonstrate the unusual nonlinear optical responses of a:SiNx-based spatially inhomogeneous quasi-periodic optical microcavity during intense femtosecond laser propagation. Aperiodic microcavities are realized using two quarter-wavelength nonstoichiometric Si- and N-rich a:SiNx layers having contrasting refractive indices and bandgaps. The photonic miniband region of the aperiodic microcavity was probed with high-intensity femtosecond laser using wavelength-dependent (740 to 900 nm) and angle-resolved studies at the miniband edge (∼750 nm). The studies reveal unusual switching from one-photon-induced saturable absorption (SA) of defect-mediated energy levels to two-photon-induced reverse saturable absorption (RSA) around the photonic miniband edge. The strong overlap of the symmetric photonic confinement with the highly dense defect energies of fractal N-rich low refractive index a:SiNx layers (3L) directly expedites such anomalous nonlinear optical switching. Extensive optical field simulations and comparative studies with its periodic microcavity counterpart strongly support the unusual nonlinearities. The fractal effect-induced resonant photonic modes in an aperiodic microcavity lead to unpredictable nonlinear optical responses, which establishes a novel and versatile route for photon manipulation and control. Thus, the present study provides deep insights into many different geometrical dominances in the evolution of photonic modes and consequent nonlinear responses, which further modulate photonic device capabilities.
Morphology-Tuned Photoluminescence in Eu3+Doped β-NaYF4Microcrystals Prepared by a Facile Soft-Templated Route Ipshita Majumdar, Ib Singh Deo, Vaishali Sethi, G. Vijaya Prakash, Ashok K. Ganguli Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 2026 NaYF4 is commonly recognized as a superior host lattice for luminescent materials due to its low phonon energy, high chemical stability, and polymorphic flexibility. In particular, the hexagonal β-NaYF4 phase is preferred for both up- and down-conversion optical applications. Here, we report a facile microemulsion-based, low-temperature (ranging from 60 to 90 °C) synthesis of β-NaYF4 doped with Eu3+ ions. Unlike conventional high-temperature methods or ligand-assisted low-temperature techniques, our approach enables phase-pure β-NaYF4 formation without requiring postsynthetic treatments. The synthesis temperature significantly influences the resulting morphology, with the microcrystals transitioning from spindles to ellipsoids and, finally, hexagonal rods. These morphological changes are systematically correlated with the photoluminescence characteristics of Eu3+, including emission intensity, asymmetry ratio (5D0 → 7F2/5D0 → 7F1), and emission lifetime. The results demonstrate how the synthesis temperature in the microemulsion reaction media can effectively tailor anisotropic growth and local asymmetry in β-NaYF4, which in turn affects the radiative and nonradiative energy transfer from the Eu3+ sites.
Synthesis, Characterization, and Redox Properties of Electron-Deficient Porphyrins with Dual Applications Varusha Bhardwaj, Albin Kuriakose, Gaddam Vijaya Prakash, Muniappan Sankar Inorganic Chemistry, 2025 To investigate the optoelectronic properties of extensively electron-deficient porphyrins, a series of mixed functionalized porphyrins with adjacent nitro (−NO 2 ) and cyano (−CN) functional groups at the β-pyrrolic positions were designed and synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions. The synthesized porphyrins were characterized by several spectroscopic techniques and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The electron-deficient nature of porphyrins, as highlighted by their redox properties, makes the macrocycle a selective optical sensor for cyanide ions with a limit of detection of nearly 1 ppm. Furthermore, porphyrins were evaluated for their nonlinear optical responses. Femtosecond laser intensity-dependent third-order nonlinear optical studies were performed using a laser with the following specifications: 800 nm, 120 fs, and 84 MHz at an intensity of 3.0 × 10 13 W/m 2 . Among all analyzed porphyrins, free-base porphyrins exhibited higher nonlinear coefficients compared to metalated porphyrins. Moreover, highly substituted porphyrins showed high nonlinear coefficient values. 3-H 2 shows the highest (∼119 × 10 –11 ) two-photon absorption coefficient (β) and the highest negative nonlinear refractive index (−28.2 × 10 –17 ), making it suitable for optical limiting applications.
Photonic Band Effects on the Optical Nonlinearities of a:SiNx-Based 1D Photonic Architectures Albin Kuriakose, Jitendra Nath Acharyya, Pankaj Srivastava, G. Vijaya Prakash ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, 2025 Meticulously engineered nonstoichiometric a:SiN x -based photonic structures, such as optical microcavities, facilitate the emergence of pronounced photonic states that are predominantly influenced by defect and interface energies, resulting in diverse and complex electron-photon interactions. In this study, we present third-order nonlinear optical investigations on a:SiN x -based optical microcavities employing femtosecond lasers across a broad wavelength range of 740–900 nm to examine the effects associated with photonic band edges, which are contingent upon defect and interface energies. The dispersion of nonlinear absorption (β) and the nonlinear refractive index ( n 2 ) through wavelength- and angle-dependent studies strongly correlate with linear angular photonic mode dispersion. Intensity-dependent nonlinear assessments provide a variation of impact with the photonic band edge effects. The strong optical field confinements and layer-by-layer nonlinearities show substantial effects on the effective optical nonlinearities in the spectral domain. Such a significant impact of photonic modes and the marked dependence of the nonlinear optical properties on optical microcavity structures highlight promising avenues for designing various photonic interconnects suited for both linear and nonlinear optical applications.
Optical exciton features in structurally diverse phenyl group-based inorganic-organic hybrid semiconductors Mohammad Adnan, Kshetra Mohan Dehury, Albin Kuriakose, G. Vijaya Prakash Journal of Applied Physics, 2025 A novel series of inorganic–organic (IO) hybrid semiconductors with varying crystal dimensions and structural reorganizations, arising from the unusual conformation of organic ammonium cation (R–NH3)+ within the MX6 inorganic octahedral networks, are investigated. Here, we report the systematic investigations of exciton behavior in a new IO hybrid series resulted out of phenyl group-based R = (C6H5–(CH2)n–NH3)+ (n = 1–4) organic moieties interactions with inorganic lead iodide (PbI2). The resultant IO hybrid semiconductors of n = 1 and n = 2 show an infinitely extended corner-sharing PbI6 octahedral 2D network, resembling natural multiple quantum wells, whereas the rest show staggered with edge sharing layered networks. Consequently, these hybrids demonstrate strong room-temperature Mott-type excitons having structural dependency. One-photon (1PA, ħω ≥ Eg) and two-photon (2PA, 2ħω ≥ Eg) absorption-induced photoluminescence (PL) studies highlight the presence of different types of excitons associated with variations in their bandgaps. The comprehensive analysis of transient absorption studies and PL spectral mapping reveal many important features of exciton behavior, specifically about their structural dependency, excited-state charge carrier dynamics, and relaxation pathways.
Meso-β Monofused Porphyrins: Synthesis, Structural, Spectral, Electrochemical and DFT Studies and Their Efficient Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties Amir Sohel Bulbul, Reena Jangra, Albin Kuriakose, Jitendra Nath Acharyya, G. Vijaya Prakash, Muniappan Sankar Chemistry A European Journal, 2025 Three new series of β‐to‐ortho‐phenyl monofused porphyrins, denoted as MMFP(MN)X2 (where MFP=monofused porphyrin, MN=malononitrile and X=H or Br) and MMFP(MN)MB (where MB=mono benzo, M=2H, Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II)) were designed and successfully synthesized with good yields. These compounds were thoroughly characterized using various spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis. Notably, three of the monofused porphyrins; CoMFP(MN)Br2, CuMFP(MN)Br2 and ZnMFP(MN)MB crystallized unambiguously in a triclinic crystal system with a space group. The twist angle values for these structures ranged from 14.03° to 21.35°. The meso‐β peripheral fusion and substituents led to tunable electronic spectral features across the synthesized porphyrins. The first reduction and oxidation potentials of all the investigated monofused porphyrins exhibited significant anodically shift as compared to their parent tetraphenylporphyrins (TPPs), attributed to peripheral fusion and electron‐withdrawing substituents, which collectively led to a reduced HOMO–LUMO gap. Ultrafast third‐order nonlinear optical (NLO) studies revealed that these monofused porphyrins showed a strong two‐photon absorption coefficient (β=0.18–39.06×10−11 m/W) and effective cross‐section ( =0.03–8.05×105 GM) values along with self‐defocusing negative nonlinear refraction behaviour (n2=(−)0.5–5.28×10−16 m2/W). These findings open new avenues for the application of meso‐β fused porphyrins in optical limiters, optical devices and other optoelectronic applications.
