    Scientific Reports, 2026
This study investigates the structural, mechanical, and radiation protection behavior of sodium phosphate glasses modified with 30 mol% Nb₂O₅ and varying MnO concentrations (0–7.5 mol%). Seven glass samples (S1–S7) were synthesized via the melt-quenching technique and characterized using FTIR, XRD, Vickers hardness testing, and MCNP simulations combined with XCOM theoretical calculations. FTIR analysis revealed that Nb₂O₅ primarily adopts octahedral coordination (NbO₆), acting as a network modifier, while MnO exhibits dual roles: Mn²⁺/Mn³⁺ ions modify the phosphate network at lower concentrations and participate in structural unit formation at higher concentrations. XRD confirmed the amorphous nature of all glasses. Mechanical testing demonstrated enhanced Vickers hardness (749–1800 MPa) with increasing MnO content, attributed to improved network rigidity. Radiation shielding evaluations highlighted superior gamma-ray attenuation for the S7 sample (7.5 mol% MnO), exhibiting the highest mass attenuation. coefficient (µ/ρ), lowest half-value layer (0.019–9.421 cm), and optimal radiation protection efficiency (100% at 30–100 keV). Neutron attenuation analysis revealed S7’s macroscopic removal cross-section (Σ r = 0.0956 cm⁻¹) outperformed conventional materials like concrete. The glasses demonstrated good stopping power and predicted range for protons and alpha particles with denser compositions (S7) showing enhanced charged particle attenuation. These findings position Nb₂O₅-MnO co-doped sodium phosphate glasses, particularly S7, as promising candidates for radiation shielding in medical, nuclear, and aerospace applications, combining mechanical durability with multi-radiation protection capabilities.

This study investigates the mechanical properties and multifunctional radiation shielding performance of a Novel Glass System (NGS) synthesized from recycled waste materials. NGS was produced from discarded lead-acid batteries and automotive glass, representing a sustainable and environmentally responsible method of glass manufacturing through the reuse of lead-free industrial waste. A thorough characterization was performed by density measurements, compositional analysis, and assessment of mechanical properties utilizing the Makishima–Mackenzie model. Structural features were examined via Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The mechanical performance of the NGS was significantly influenced by the PbO content, which was varied from 10 to 50 mol%. With the rise in PbO content, a significant decline in both Young’s modules (from 73.446 GPa at 0% PbO to 37.480 GPa at 50% PbO) and hardness (from 4.709 GPa to 3.141 GPa) was noted, demonstrating adjustable mechanical properties. The radiation shielding properties, evaluated by the Exposure Buildup Factor (EBF) and Energy Absorption Buildup Factor (EABF), demonstrated significant energy dependency with noticeable peaks at specific penetration depths. Moreover, the Specific Absorbed Fraction of Energy (SAFE) and Gamma-rays Transmission Factor (GTF) illustrated the efficacy of the NGS in attenuating gamma radiation throughout a wide energy range. The results highlight the dual capabilities of the designed glass system, which integrates sufficient mechanical strength with effective gamma-rays shielding. These findings proved NGS as a viable option for sustainable shielding materials, enhancing the circular economy and tackling significant issues in radiation safety and waste management.

This study is carried out to investigate the radiological characteristics and mineralogical controls of natural radioisotopes (238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K) in granitic pegmatites from Abu Zawal Area (AZA) in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. The analyzed pegmatites, containing thorite, zircon, monazite, ferrocolumbite, and fergusonite, exhibit exceptionally high radioactivity concentrations of 238U ≤ 568; 232Th ≤ 674; 226Ra ≤ 170 (Bq kg−1), significantly exceeding the world average permissible limits (35, 30, 30, and 400 Bq kg−1 for 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K, respectively). Comprehensive radiological assessment reveals severely elevated radiological impact associated with Raeq ≤ 1243 (Bq kg−1) and hazard indices (Hex≤ 3.36; ELCR ≤ 12.2 × 10−3) surpassing international safety thresholds (Hex ≤ 1; ELCR ≤ 1 × 10−3). The observed disequilibrium between 238U and 226Ra (with 226Ra activities approximately half those of 238U) is attributed to the geochemical mobility of radium and potential selective leaching during late-stage hydrothermal alteration, while the overall enrichment of the uranium series over the thorium series is linked to the predominance of uranium-bearing minerals like zircon and fergusonite in these pegmatites. Mineralogical analysis demonstrates distinct radiation patterns: thorite and monazite dominate Th-derived gamma radiation and radon/thoron exhalation, while zircon and fergusonite control U enrichment and decay chain disequilibrium. Notably, nominally low-activity minerals like ferrocolumbite contribute to localized radiation hotspots through U/Th co-concentrations. The calculated absorbed dose rates ranged from 182 to 978 (nGy h−1) and annual effective doses show extreme spatial variability correlated with Th-rich mineral assemblages.

  • Nuclear track autoradiography for radon-related radiobiological hazards in Abu-Sannan Petroleum Area, Egypt
Aya Abdelrazk, Hagar Ahmed, Ali El-Farrash, Mohamed Mitwalli
    Scientific Reports, 2025
Abu-Sannan Petroleum Area (ASPA) is situated in Egyptian Western Desert and presents a suitable site for oil exploration. This study aimed to evaluate the radiological hazards linked to technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM), particularly Radium (²²⁶Ra) and Radon (²²²Rn), in the General Petroleum Y-Field (GPY) situated in the northeastern area of ASPA. The study was examined significant deficiencies in radiological monitoring by evaluating ²²²Rn dynamics, geological correlations, and related radiation hazards. CR-39 nuclear track detector was used to examine 23 sedimentary samples for ²²²Rn and ²²⁶Ra radioactivity concentration. The samples under study were taken from depths 100 to 2600 m ASPA. A radioecological assessment of shale, limestone, and sandstone formations was also conducted. Results showed that the radioactivity concentrations of ²²²Rn and ²²⁶Ra increased with depth, reaching a maximum of 1906.85 ± 194.52 Bq.m −3 and 89.99 ± 1.69 Bq.m −3 at 2600 m, respectively. The value of ²²²Rn and ²²⁶Ra were higher than the limits set by the IAEA and UNSCEAR. The annual effective doses (AED) varied from 7.41 ± 4.82 to 48.11 ± 12.27 m.Sv.y − 1 , exceeding the international safety threshold of 1–10 m.Sv.y − 1 . Increased hazards were observed in deeper layers, notably the Bahariya Sandstone, due to the presence of uranium-rich rocks and highly porous matrices. Radiometric and geological analyses indicated that shale strata contain ²²⁶Ra but cracked limestone and sandstone formations permit the migration of ²²²Rn. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed significant correlations among ²²²Rn concentration, exhalation rates, and AED, underscoring the lithological influence on radiation hazards. The results highlight considerable occupational health hazards in ASPA, necessitating improved radiation protection measures and ongoing surveillance to reduce lung cancer risks associated with prolonged ²²²Rn exposure, in accordance with WHO guidelines. This study offers essential data to inform regulatory strategies in petroleum-producing areas with similar geological characteristics and radiation protection protocols.
