Human and animal sporotrichosis has been observed in Corumbá and Ladário, Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Brazil, since 2011. The unique characteristics of border areas and the human-environmentanimal interface necessitate the development of health policies and programs that incorporate One Health concepts, fostering advances in health research and management. This article examines the epidemiological aspects of feline sporotrichosis with the aim of supporting decisions pertinent to its prevention, control, and public health management. Data were collected from veterinary records between 2011 and 2018, encompassing 315 cases (five dogs and 310 cats). Mapping of compatible or confirmed cases of animal sporotrichosis was conducted using QGis, though data loss posed a significant limitation. Descriptive statistics assessed the frequency of variables, geo-statistical analysis methods, and disease occurrence rates. This study represents the first investigation of sporotrichosis in the state. The occurrence rate in felines varied from 0.04% to 3.50% between 2015 and 2018. The typical profile of infected cats was young adults that were not neutered. The euthanasia rate was 76.50%, while the cure rate for treated animals stood at 64.90%. A higher number of cases was associated with more populous neighborhoods, indicating these as higher-risk areas. The findings were crucial in engaging public authorities and the community to address sporotrichosis. However, improvements are needed in areas such as case notification, laboratory diagnosis, treatment monitoring, health education, responsible pet ownership, and population control of felines.

There are reports of septicemic salmonellosis in exotic birds caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium, although they are scarce and do not address the anatomopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of this condition in blue-fronted Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva). This study aims to report an outbreak of salmonellosis by S. Typhimurium in 15 blue-fronted parrots introduced to a rehabilitation center in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Hepatomegaly and splenomegaly, accompanied by flat white areas in the capsule and parenchyma, were the most frequent gross changes, histologically represented by necrotic and heterophilic hepatitis and splenitis and associated with bacteria in the cytoplasm of macrophages and free in the affected tissue. S. Typhimurium was identified from bacterial culture, PCR, and DNA sequencing. Along with immunohistochemistry samples of liver, spleen, kidney, small intestine, pancreas, thyroid, heart, and lung, immunostaining was used for Salmonella spp. without previous bacterial isolation. The lethality of this outbreak demonstrates the relevance of salmonellosis in blue-fronted parrots, which are known to be carriers of this bacteria.

Introduction: Escherichia coli strains that lead to enteritis are considered an important cause of diarrhea in calves. For correct identification, these microorganisms must be differentiated from non-pathogenic members of the intestinal microbiota. The aim of the present work was to characterize E. coli isolates in calves regarding the presence of virulence genes that cause enteritis and evaluate the sensitivity of the isolates to different antimicrobials.
Methodology: One hundred forty-nine samples from beef cattle and 27 samples from dairy cattle were evaluated. All samples were submitted to microbiological identification and the disk diffusion antibiogram test. The polymerase chain reaction method was used to detect virulence genes.
Results: A hundred seventy-six samples were biochemically identified as E. coli and antibiograms were determined. The samples were then submitted to PCR; 35 were positive for the eae gene (19.88%), 135 (76.70%) for the stx1 gene, 62 (35.22%) for the stx2 gene, 159 (90.34%) for the sta gene and 35 (19.88%) for the ltII gene. No samples were positive for the cnf gene. Based on these results, the E. coli isolates were classified into pathotypes: enteropathogenic (n = 3), enterohemorrhagic (n = 32), Shiga toxin-producing (n = 122) and enterotoxigenic (n = 163). The antimicrobial sensitivity tests revealed that 77.2% of the isolates were resistant to three or more pharmacological groups, characterizing these isolates as multidrug resistant.
Conclusions: Enterotoxigenic E. coli was the predominant pathotype. Moreover, the prevalence of multidrug-resistant isolates was very high, accounting for the vast majority of isolates.

Tracheal fungal infections in horses are rare. This case report describes surgical and clinical management of a filly with a Curvularia sp. infection within the trachea and skin that caused severe intraluminal granulomas and cutaneous nodules, respectively. The patient was successfully treated with itraconazole and surgical excision.

Foodborne pathogens are a real public health concern in an escalating antimicrobial resistance scenario. Natural products represent a promising source of bioactive molecules, and essential oils have attracted much attention due to their myriad of biological properties, including antibacterial activities. In this context, essential oils obtained from the leaves of Chromolaena squalida, Campomanesia sessiliflora, Myrsine guianensis, Matayba guianensis, Siparuna guianensis, Ocotea minarum and Endlicheria paniculata—species from the Cerrado biome of Midwest Brazil—were extracted and evaluated for their antibacterial activity against a panel of four standard and three clinical multidrug−resistant bacterial strains. All tested oils showed moderate to good activity against at least four bacterial strains, including Salmonella Typhi and oxacillin−resistant Staphylococcus. The essential oils from C. squalida, C. sessiliflora, My. guianensis and Ma. guianensis showed strong inhibition of clinical Staphylococcus strains, which cause bovine mastitis and are related to milk−borne diseases. Their chemical profiles were investigated by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS), which revealed a predominance of mono− and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, some of which with well−known antimicrobial properties. The essential oil from Cerrado plants proved active against resistant Gram−positive and Gram−negative bacteria, revealing their potentialities for the development of new alternative agents to prevent the spreading of resistant bacterial contamination.
