Rare case of bilateral complex odontoma associated with mandibular bicuspids RangeethBollam Nammalwar, Joyson Moses, Sathya Jeeva Dental Research Journal, 2018 Among oral pathologic lesions, odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumor of the jaws and generally asymptomatic. They are mostly diagnosed as a result of routine radiographic investigation. In this report, we describe a very rare occurrence of bilateral complex odontoma in the region of the mandibular second premolar. Conservative surgical procedure was planned, and removal of the odontomas was carried out through the socket after extraction of the deciduous second molars, and the diagnosis was confirmed with a histopathological study.
Comparative evaluation of the marginal sealing ability of two commercially available pit and fissure sealants Lakshmi Priya Sridhar Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2016 INTRODUCTION: The occlusal surfaces of the teeth usually have pits and fissures which provide a good environment for demineralization with minimal salivary access and make them caries prone. The success of pit and fissure sealing materials is highly dependent on the marginal sealing ability of the fissures. AIM: The present study was carried out to evaluate and compare the marginal sealing ability of two commercially available pit and fissure sealants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 human premolar teeth were used in this invitro study. Group 1 included 25 teeth for application of Clinpro sealant and Group 2 included twenty 25 for application of Helioseal F sealant. Samples were stored in artificial saliva for 72 hours before thermocycling. The samples were immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 24 hours. The sectioned samples were examined under an Optical Stereomicroscope and compared in terms of the extent of microleakage based on the amount of dye penetration between the sealant and tooth substance interface. The dye penetration scores in both the groups was statistically analysed using Chi square test and Mann Whitney Test. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: It was seen that in Group 1, 12 samples (48%) had no dye penetration (Grade 0) while in Group 2, 6 samples (24%) demonstrated Grade 0 penetration. Group 2 had the most extensive dye penetration (Grade 3) in 8 of 25 samples (32%) (p=0.014). CONCLUSION: On comparison of the microleakage scores of the groups, a statistically significant difference was found between the two groups; indicating a much better performance of Clinpro as compared to Helioseal F.
Comparison of the source of introduction to cariogenic food substance and caries prevalence in children R. Somasundaram Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2014 INTRODUCTION: Dental caries being a multi-factorial disease depends on lot of factors. Since awareness and exposure seems to have increased, in the present scenario it is difficult to assume that one particular source would increase the occurrence of dental caries. Children are exposed to different media sources and spend most of their free time watching them. They are attracted by messages of advertisers' and susceptible to stylish advertisements of foods often harmful to oral and general health. AIM: To compare the effects of three different sources of introduction to cariogenic food substance among school children and their role in caries prevalence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 300 school children were selected for the study and a questionnaire was prepared keeping in mind the various sources introducing cariogenic foods to children namely television advertisement, magazines/news paper, posters/banners. Following which oral examination will be done to determine the number of carious lesions in the subjects. The data will be acquired, computed and statistically analysed to compare the correlation between these sources and caries prevalence. RESULTS: Children who watched television advertisements and asked for food items and soft drinks were found to have more caries and DMFT/dmft index. CONCLUSION: A total ban on advertisements would not be practically possible. A more realistic approach would be to limit the number of advertisements that feature potentially cariogenic and unhealthy food products, and also ensure that they ideally carry statutory warnings.
Non-syndromic oligodontia of primary and permanent dentition: 5 year follow up-a rare case report Joyson Moses Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2013 Oligodontia designates the congenital absence of six or more permanent teeth, excluding the third molars. Oligodontia of primary and permanent dentition is a rare observance. This case report describes the missing teeth in primary and permanent dentition of an 8 year old boy. Early diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment planning with good coordination and timing of the individual treatment phases are decisive for a successful treatment outcome.
