CO2 mineralization through local cement dust: A sustainable sequestration pathway Wasim Ullah Khan, Sheikha Wahdain, Salem Alshammari, Zuhair AlYousef, Mohammad Mozahar Hossain Next Sustainability, 2026 Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sequestration via mineralization is an efficient approach to permanently store this greenhouse gas in the form of solid carbonates. Moreover, annually increasing stocks and expensive landfills of cement kiln dust (CKD) necessitate groundbreaking solutions to utilize this CKD. One way to simultaneously utilize CKD and sequester CO 2 is CKD aqueous mineralization. This work explored CKD carbonation at various liquid to solid ratios (0.4–10), mineralization times (10–120 min), mineralization temperatures (25–75°C), and CO 2 flow rates (5–20 ml/min). The product analysis using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was conducted to identify CO 2 governing mineralogical and chemical processes. The product characterizations revealed that an increase in liquid to solid ration from 0.4 to 10 facilitated higher CO 2 uptake and yielded calcite as major product that was further confirmed by XRD and SEM. An increase in mineralization time from 10 to 20 min improved CO 2 uptake, however, further increase in time even up to 120 min had no significant impact on CO 2 uptake. The product analysis indicated no influence of mineralization time on polymorph of calcite formed. An increment in mineralization temperature from 25 to 50°C produced more carbonated products (increased CO 2 uptake), however a further increase in temperature to 75°C showed a decrease in CO 2 uptake. The product morphology remained independent of mineralization temperature. The impact of CO 2 flow rate demonstrated that both the product yield (CO 2 uptake) and product morphology were insignificantly affected by change in CO 2 flow rates. These findings elucidate the CO 2 mineralization processes of CKD and are vital to explore CO 2 sequestration by CKD.
Optimizing calcium leaching from cement kiln dust for indirect CO2 mineralization: Experimental design and machine learning driven insights Sheikha F. Wahdain, Ahmad A. Umar, Salem Alshammari, Zuhair AlYousef, Wasim U. Khan, Syed Ahmed Ali, Mohammad M. Hossain Results in Engineering, 2026 • Hybrid machine learning framework optimizes calcium recovery from cement waste • Decision Tree ML outperforms RSM in predictive accuracy and interpretability • Liquid-to-solid ratio and NH 4 Cl concentration are dominant leaching parameters • Optimal leaching yields 21.4 g L -1 Ca with only 1.9 % ML validation error • SEM-EDS, ICP-OES, XRD and FTIR confirms selective Ca extraction The global cement industry produces a significant amount of CO 2 emissions while simultaneously generating large amounts of cement kiln dust (CKD), a highly alkaline byproduct rich in reactive calcium. CO 2 mineralization, a pathway for permanent sequestration through recovered calcium from CKD, has limited efficiency during leaching, owing to many interacting parameters. Traditional statistical models, such as response surface methodology (RSM), are useful to optimize those parameters but may misrepresent the complex, nonlinear interactions thereby limiting prediction accuracy. In this study, calcium leaching from CKD was investigated using a hybrid RSM-machine learning (ML) framework. Preliminary testing showed that stirring speed had little impact, allowing focus on ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) concentration, temperature, leaching time, and liquid-to-solid (LS -1 ) ratio. The RSM model had an adjusted R 2 of 0.84 (predicted R 2 of 0.82) providing optimized conditions of 1.5 M NH 4 Cl, 40 °C, 30 min, and 10 L kg -1 . Decision Tree ML model achieved higher accuracy (training R 2 = 0.94, testing R 2 = 0.87, RMSE = 1.5-2.5), using interpretability tools, identified LS -1 ratio and NH 4 Cl concentration as the most impactful parameters. Experimental validation confirmed the robustness of ML with only 1.9 % deviation compared to the 9.8 % for RSM. Structural and compositional characterization confirmed the selective leaching efficiency of NH 4 Cl. Subsequent carbonation of calcium-rich leachate successfully produced calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ). Therefore, this integrated RSM-ML framework enhances insights and predictive capability for calcium leaching from CKD, a critical step in indirect CO 2 mineralization.
Catalytic Oxidative Cracking of n-Hexane Over Zeolites/Montmorillonite-Supported Manganese Oxide Systems for Olefin Production Using a Riser Simulator Ariel Hazril Gursida, Idris A. Bakare, Shaikh Abdur Razzak, Mohammad Mozahar Hossain Chemistryselect, 2026 Oxidative cracking of n ‐hexane using lattice oxygen is investigated over MnO X /zeolite matrices. The catalysts were synthesized by impregnating MnO X onto zeolite matrices. The prepared samples were characterized using XRD, SEM, and BET, which revealed smooth, fine, highly crystalline, and highly dispersed MnO X . TPR confirmed that the zeolite support contains highly reducible manganese species. The quantity of MnO X loaded also influenced activity and product selectivity. The olefin and CO X selectivity are modified by reaction time/temperature and the amount of lattice oxygen. ZMn15 demonstrated 56.6% n ‐hexane conversion and 73.6% olefin selectivity at 550°C and 10 s reaction time. This improved performance is due to the intermittent release of lattice oxygen, optimal acidity, microporosity, and mesoporosity.
Ni/MWCNT-GNP for Clean Hydrogen Via Catalytic NH3 Decomposition: The Importance of Desorption Kinetics Achieving High NH3 Conversion Abid Salam Farooqi, Raihan Mahirah Ramli, Achmad Ferdiansyah Pradana Putra, Wasim Ullah Khan, Syed Muhammad Wajahat ul Hasnain, Ahmad Salam Farooqi, Bawadi Abdullah, Mohammad Mozahar Hossain Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, 2026 Ammonia decomposition has emerged as a promising approach to on-site hydrogen production. In this study, nickel supported on multiwalled carbon nanotube-graphene nanoplatelet (Ni/MWCNT-GNP) was investigated as a catalyst for low-temperature ammonia decomposition. The catalysts were prepared by impregnating 10 wt% Ni on to MWCNT-GNP supports with different GNP contents (0–40 wt%). Physicochemical properties were characterized using XRD, H 2 -TPR, H 2 /N 2 /NH 3 -TPD, CO chemisorption, TEM, and XRF. XRF confirmed the presence of NiO in the fresh catalysts, whereas XRD showed partial autoreduction at around 550 °C under inert conditions. CO chemisorption revealed that the 30 wt% GNP catalyst had the highest Ni dispersion (2.36%) and surface area (15.71 m 2 /g). The TPD analysis showed that this catalyst exhibited the lowest desorption onset temperatures for H 2, N 2, and NH 3, indicating lower desorption energies and enhanced reaction rates. TEM confirmed that a 70:30 MWCNT:GNP ratio resulted in the smallest average Ni particle size (50.44 nm) and the most uniform particle distribution among the studied catalysts. The catalytic test revealed that catalytic performance was highly dependant on the GNP content, in the following order: 30 wt% > 40 wt% > 20 wt% > 10 wt% > 0 wt%. Remarkably, the 30 wt% GNP catalyst achieved 98% NH 3 conversion at 600 °C, significantly higher than the other formulations. Overall, these results highlight the importance of support composition in enhancing metal–support interactions and promoting N 2 desorption, thereby contributing to the development of high-performance nickel-based catalysts for sustainable hydrogen production from ammonia.
