    SummaryThis article proposes a bidirectional quasi‐Z‐source DC‐DC converter (BQZSDC) to integrate distributed energy storage system with a stand‐alone photovoltaic (PV)‐connected system. The operational challenges like control and energy management of the renewable‐driven stand‐alone systems have been an interest of research. However, the challenge is managing the renewable energy source and the distributed energy storage system and simultaneously catering to the loads. This article analyzes the performance of a BQZSDC with a Lyapunov function‐based controller for regulating DC link voltage (load voltage) and battery current. A duty‐ratio feedforward control unit and a Lyapunov function‐based feedback control unit are used to develop the controller. The duty‐ratio feedforward control unit is used to reduce the burden on the feedback controller. The closed‐loop system is exponentially stable with the feedback controller, offering excellent transient responsiveness even under large disturbances. Simulations in MATLAB/Simulink show that the controller functions satisfactorily in achieving regulation objectives. Finally, experimental results validate the performance of the proposed controller.
  • Flexible System Architecture of Stand-alone PV Connected System with Energy Storage

    This article proposed a flexible system architecture of a stand-alone photovoltaic connected system (SPVS) with energy storage. An SPVS with energy storage requires power management architecture to account for various operating modes. A co-ordinate controller is often required to manage the change in control architecture depending on the operating mode. This architecture contains a boost converter (BC), and a bidirectional switched quasi-Z-source DC-DC converter (BSQZSDC). The BC is used for two purposes. The first is to extract the maximum power from the PV by using the MPPT technique. The second is to control the DC link voltage when the SPVS is not in MPPT mode. This BSQZSDC is used for energy management and regulates DC link voltage when SPVS is operating in MPPT mode. To regulate the DC bus voltage and battery current in different modes of operation, BSQZSDC makes use of an effective control approach, the Integral Sliding Mode Control discussed in this paper. To prove that the controller is effective in fulfilling the control objectives, simulations were run.
  • Performance Analysis of Passivity-Based Controller in a Stand-alone PV Connected System with Energy Storage

    The article proposed a stand-alone PV-connected system with energy storage (SPVSES). The SPVSES requires power management in various operating modes. The SPVSES consists of a boost converter (BC) and a bidirectional switched quasi-Z-source DC-DC converter (BSQZSDC). The boost converter extracts maximum power from the PV panel using the improved variable step size perturb and observe-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique. The BSQZSDC operates as a bidirectional converter to regulate the DC link voltage using a passivity-based controller (PBC). The simulations are performed with load variation at constant irradiation and irradiation variation at constant load. Experimental results validate the performance of the proposed system in different operating conditions.
  • Design and Development of Fixed-Frequency Double-Integral SM-Controlled Solar-Integrated Bidirectional Quasi Z -Source DC-DC Converter in Standalone Battery Connected System

    DC microgrids have been quite popular in recent times. The operational challenges like control and energy management of the renewable-driven standalone DC microgrids have been an interest of research. This paper presents a bidirectional quasi Z-source DC-DC converter (BQZSDC). This converter topology has been developed based on a conventional buck-boost type bidirectional converter, and it interfaces the storage system and the common DC bus. The challenge, however, lies in effectively managing the uncertain renewable energy sources and the storage system and catering for the loads simultaneously. An effective control strategy is needed for that energy management and to achieve various microgrid objectives. This paper deals with one such effective control strategy implemented for BQZSDC. That is, the fixed-frequency double-integral sliding mode control (FF-DISMC) controls the converter to regulate the DC bus voltage and battery current. A detailed analysis of the controller is conducted, and its performance is evaluated for both charging (buck) and discharging (boost) modes. Simulations have been performed in MATLAB, showing that the controller performs satisfactorily in achieving the objectives of voltage regulation and battery current regulation. Finally, the performance of the proposed controller is validated with the hardware setup.
  • Fixed Frequency Integral Sliding Mode Control for Bidirectional Switched Quasi Z-source DC-DC Converter in Standalone PV Connected System

    Nowadays, energy management in a microgrid consists of distributed renewable energy sources, and distributed energy storage has proven to be a major challenge. The difficulty is successfully managing the dynamic renewable sources, the storage system, and the loads simultaneously. This paper presents a Bidirectional Switched Quasi Z-source DC-DC Converter (BSQZSDC) to integrate an energy storage system with a PV-connected common DC bus. A fixed frequency integral sliding mode controller (FFISMC) is used to regulate DC-Link voltage with good dynamic response in the proposed system. The FF-ISMC reduces steady-state errors and provides stable control even when the load changes significantly in both modes operations of BSQZSDC. The controller operates satisfactorily in achieving the voltage regulation objective, as per simulations conducted in MATLAB/Simulink. Finally, the proposed performance of the controller is verified using an experimental setup.
  • Indirect Sliding-mode Digital Control for DC-DC Cuk Converter

    This article explains indirect sliding mode control (SMC) that can be used on Cuk converters. Unlike standard SMC approaches, the proposed indirect SMC approach uses only the input current error to determine sliding surface functions. Implementation is made easier and more affordable with the help of a sliding surface function. It is demonstrated that indirect regulation of the output voltage is possible. A proportional-integral (PI) controller provides the input current reference. Existence criteria and the closed-loop system region are established for all PI gain scenarios. The proposed SMC method is tested on Matlab/Simulation in order to determine whether it can keep the voltage stable when the input voltage and load resistance change suddenly. The outcomes of the simulation results are presented and discussed.

    In a DC microgrid, energy management among distributed renewable energy sources, energy storage and load have been a major challenge. For the proper management of energy, a control scheme for bidirectional Quasi Z-Source DC-DC Converter (BQZSDC) has been presented in this paper. BQZSDC is buck-boost type of bidirectional DC-DC converter. It helps to integrate energy storage systems with energy sources and load. This paper presents the performance analysis of BQZSDC with dual-loop proportional integral control for regulating battery current and the load voltage. The controller parameters are tuned using stability boundary locus method based on desired phase margin. The performance of the controller has been validated in both discharging (Boost) and charging (Buck) mode. The MATLAB simulation results shows that the load voltage and battery current is satisfactorily regulated under load current variation in both discharging and charging modes.
