  • Moyamoya disease—“A puff of smoke”: A rare pediatric case report
    Sadhna Sharma, Ramanandvignesh Pandian
International Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, 2020
INTRODUCTION: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare neurovascular disorder that is characterized by chronic progressive stenosis at the apices and bilateral occlusion of the intracranial internal carotid arteries. The occlusion is gradual in manner; multiple anastomoses are formed between the internal and external carotid arteries. The incidence of MMD has increased in Asian countries with a decline in Europe and United States. CASE DESCRIPTION: The case report describes the specific clinical features and dental treatment in a 12-year-old male presenting with MMD with right-side hemiplegia. The patient presented with broken tooth in the upper front tooth region due to trauma. The dental treatment plan focused on providing restorative as well as preventive care to the patient. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The patients with MMD have an increased risk of stroke development, which may be aggravated by pain or anxiety. It is necessary to avoid cerebral ischemic attacks caused by fluctuating BP and respiration. It becomes imperative to maintain normocapnia, normotension, and pain control during the procedure in order to prevent postoperative ischemic complications. Dental professionals must attain a complete knowledge of this disease and perform the dental treatment in pain and stress-free manner. HOW TO CITE THIS ARTICLE: Goswami M, Pandian R, Sharma S. International Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, 2020
An emergent pneumonia outbreak, denoted as coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization (WHO) originated in Wuhan City, in late December 2019 and spread at an alarming rate to become a pandemic affecting more than 200 countries. The COVID-19 is caused by a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), which is highly contagious and is associated with a high mortality rate. The current COVID-19 outbreak has created a major havoc among every strata of the society with a detrimental impact on healthcare professionals, including dentists limiting their capabilities at large. The transmission of virus through aerosols produced by high- and low-speed handpieces, ultrasonic scalers, air/water syringes, or an infected patient coughing, and even when taking intraoral radiographs has made it difficult for dental personnel to provide even the most basic services to the needful. The virus survives on environmental surfaces for extended periods of time, including metal and plastic surfaces commonly found in dental offices making it utmost necessary to follow the precautions and recommendations issued by various organizations in order to contain its spread. This article aims to provide the latest knowledge encompassing the various aspects of COVID-19 to pediatric dentists in India. • Clinical and radiographic evaluation of pulpotomy using mta, biodentine and er,cr:Ysgg laser in primary teeth– a clinical study
Pandiyan Ramanandvignesh, Kumar Gyanendra, Dhillon Jatinder Kaur Goswami Mridula
    Laser Therapy, 2020
Background: The aim of the study was to compare the clinical and radiographic evaluation of pulpotomy using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), calcium silicate-based cement (Biodentine), and Er,Cr:YSGG laser in primary molars. Materials and methods: Fifty-four primary teeth were selected for this study as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the age group of 4-9 years and then randomly allocated to three groups A, B & C. In group A, after removal of coronal pulp, MTA was placed at the floor of pulp chamber. In group B, calcium silicate-based cement (Biodentine) was placed at the floor of pulp chamber. In group C, decontamination of the cavity was done with Er,Cr:YSGG laser. This was followed by placement of permanent restorative material in all the groups. Clinical and radiographic success was evaluated at 3, 6 and 9 months. Data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Science-21 (SPSS-21). Results: At the end of 9 months, overall success rate of pulpotomy was 85.5%. There was no significant difference among the three groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The study showed that the success of pulpotomy procedure is independent of the type of medicament used for pulpotomy. Moreover, the study also shows that Er,Cr:YSGG laser can be effectively used for pulpotomy procedures.
  • Molar Incisor Hypomineralization—An Emerging Burden: A Short Study on Prevalence and Clinical Characteristics in Central Delhi, India
    Ramanandvignesh Pandiyan, Sadhna Sharma
International Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, 2019
AIM: To determine the prevalence of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) in 6-12 years old children of the Central Delhi area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive short study consisted of 1,026 children aged 6-12 years selected by a random sampling procedure. The parents were interviewed and relevant prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal history was recorded. The dental examination was carried out by well-trained pediatric dentists. Full mouth examination of teeth was conducted including the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (EAPD) 2003 criteria for the diagnosis of MIH. The results were documented and statistically analyzed using the Chi-square test. RESULTS: < 0.05) with a higher number of males affected with MIH. A total of 77 teeth (44 molars and 32 incisors) were observed with MIH. The severity of MIH was more in molars (52.27%) when compared to incisors (24.24%). All the four first permanent molars were affected in 83.3% of children with MIH. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of MIH in a small sample of 1,026 children aged 6-12 years in Central Delhi was 1.17%. A significant male predilection was reported. MIH is a developmental disturbance occurring during the maturation phase of enamel formation, which requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach. The high esthetic demand and the inability to deliver successful restorative care to the hypomineralized teeth can pose great difficulties. Hence, more studies related to prevalence, nature, and severity of MIH and awareness regarding the associated risk factors are required to reveal the hidden burden across the country and to further prevent the occurrence of MIH. • Knowledge, attitude, and practical behavior of parents regarding their child's oral health in New Delhi
Gyanendra Kumar, JatinderKaur Dhillon, Ramanand Vignesh, Aditi Garg
Journal of Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, 2019
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practical behavior of parents regarding their children's oral health in New Delhi. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 500 parents who reported in outpatient department in the Department of General Medicine at Maulana Azad Medical College and in the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry at Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, New Delhi. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. The statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (21.0 version; Inc., Chicago IL, USA) for descriptive and multivariate analysis, and the level of statistical significance used in this study was chosen at P < 0.005. RESULTS: The results of this explorative research showed that the sample selected had a relatively good knowledge regarding the importance of the primary teeth, the fact that problems in primary teeth can affect the permanent teeth, brushing frequency on daily basis, and brushing aids. Participants were aware about the effect of prolonged bottle feeding and sticky foods on the dentition. On the other hand, the majority of participants failed to recognize the ideal time of first dental visit. Parents showed positive attitudes regarding the importance of regular dental visit and their role in their children's daily oral hygiene habits. CONCLUSION: In New Delhi, parental awareness and attitudes regarding their children's oral health are relatively good. However, the high dental caries prevalence in children in Central New Delhi contradict the study findings, which prove the fact that changing parental behavior and attitudes toward their children's oral health is far more important than increasing their knowledge only.
