Beyond Petroleum Plastics: Tailored Starch Composite Films With Enhanced Thermal Stability and Antimicrobial Activity Avani Thakkar, Gautam Priyadarshi, Bhakti Patel, Santosh Kumar Sahu, Sohilkhan Chauhan, Dipak Kumar Sahoo, Madhvi Joshi, Ashish Patel Starch Staerke, 2026 Increasing environmental concerns regarding conventional plastics have encouraged the growth of research and development of sustainable solutions. This study focused on the development and analysis of composite films, using starch as the matrix and integrating gelatin, zinc, and calcium carbonate as fillers. Gelatin‐based composite films (GCF), zinc‐based composite films (ZCF), and calcium carbonate‐based composite films (CCF) were prepared and evaluated for their mechanical, thermal, structural, biodegradation, and antimicrobial properties. The incorporation of fillers significantly improved thermal stability, mechanical durability, and biodegradation properties of composite films. The highest tensile strength was observed in CCF (38.05 MPa), while GCF showed maximum elongation at break (36%), indicating enhancing flexibility. Thermal analysis (TGA and DSC) demonstrated that CCF exhibited enhanced thermal stability, characterized by delayed degradation behavior and an increased residual mass. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of intermolecular interactions and hydrogen bonding between starch and fillers, as indicated by alterations in the characteristic function group shifts. Among the composite films analyzed, ZCF exhibited stronger antimicrobial activity against bacterial strains. Biodegradable analysis confirm that all composite films remain environmentally degradable. These findings indicate that starch composite films with fillers are mechanically robust, thermally stable, antimicrobial, and biodegradable, suitable for food and medical packaging.
Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Biopolymer Based Alkali-Activated Fly Ash Beads for Cationic Dye Removal: A Statistical Physics Modeling Approach Gautam Priyadarshi, Disha Patoliya, Bhakti Patel, Mrugesh Trivedi, Sherzodbek Tashbaev, Gulomov Gafurjon Shavkatbek Ugli, Dipak Kumar Sahoo, Ashish Patel Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2026 This study investigates the novel microwave‐assisted synthesis of a Chitosan‐based Alkali Activated Fly Ash (CS@AAFA) composite beads to remove Malachite Green (MG). The synthesized materials were evaluated using FTIR for identifying the presence of functional groups, XRD for elemental composition and crystallinity, FEG‐SEM for micro & nano surface structures and point zero charge. The MG dye removal experiments were conducted with a 617 nm wavelength by UV–Vis spectrophotometer. Adsorption parameters such as initial concentration (50–150 mg L −1 ), contact time (0–150 min), dose (0.5–4 g L −1 ), and pH (2–12) were investigated. The most favorable (91.8%) removal was observed at 27°C, 10 pH and 50 mg L −1 MG concentration at a 2 g L −1 dose of adsorbent. The isotherm, kinetic and statistical physics models indicate Langmuir type physiosorption with multilayer adsorption capacity of 65.1 mg g −1 . The field potential of the adsorbents was investigated through ionic strength and dye mixtures, ensuring the best adsorption onto the CS@AAFA composite surface. The adsorption mechanism suggests electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, n–π stacking and pore filling. The present investigation provides rapid synthesis and removal of MG dye using synthesized low‐cost adsorbent with potential applicability in wastewater treatment.
Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Chitosan–Iron Oxide (CS@Fe3O4) Nanocomposite for Removal of Cationic and Anionic Dyes Gautam Priyadarshi, Jaydip Kachhadiya, Devyani Shah, Bhakti Patel, Sherzodbek Tashbaev, Gulomov Gafurjon Shavkatbek Ugli, Mrugesh Trivedi, Dipak Kumar Sahoo, Ashish Patel Macromolecular Materials and Engineering, 2026 The present study investigates the microwave‐assisted synthesis of a Chitosan‐Iron Oxide (CS@Fe 3 O 4 ) nanocomposite for the removal of Alizarine Red (AR) and Malachite Green (MG) dyes. The synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and pHZPC to evaluate their elemental compositions, functional groups, surface structures, and surface charge. The AR and MG dye removal experiments were conducted using a UV–vis spectrophotometer at 432 and 617 nm wavelength, respectively, under various conditions including concentration (20–100 mg L −1 ), contact time (0– 120 min for AR and 0–60 for MG), dose (0.4–2 g L −1 ), pH (2–12). The maximum removals of 91% & 96% obtained at 2 and 10 pH, 5 and 100 mg L −1 concentration, 1 & 2 g L −1 dose of CS@Fe 3 O 4 for AR & MG dyes, respectively. Adsorption kinetics were determined to be pseudo‐second order for both linear and non‐linear regression. The Langmuir adsorption capacity was 82.29 and 46.73 mg g −1 for AR and MG dyes, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters observed a spontaneous and endothermic. The field applicability of the adsorbent was confirmed through ionic strength, regeneration capacity, rapid and low‐cost synthesis, with potential applicability in wastewater treatment.
Utilization of Agricultural Waste: Chickpea Husk as a Sustainable Adsorbent for Thionine Dye Removal Ritul Patel, Gautam Priyadarshi, Bhakti Patel, Snehal Bagatharia, Dipak Kumar Sahoo, Dinesh Bhatia, Ashish Patel Clean Soil Air Water, 2026 This study aimed to evaluate chickpea husk (CH) ( Cicer arietinum ), an agricultural waste, as a sustainable adsorbent for the removal of cationic thionine (TH) dye from aqueous solution. CH was utilized in raw powder form and after pyrolysis at 300°C (CH@300) and 800°C (CH@800). All materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x‐ray diffraction (XRD), surface area analysis Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy‐dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy (EDX), and zeta potential. BET surface area analysis revealed that CH has a specific surface area 3.48 m 2 g −1 , whereas CH@300 and CH@800 exhibit 1.78 and 0.082 m 2 g −1 , respectively, indicating reducing in surface area with higher pyrolysis temperature. Among the three adsorbents (CH, CH@300, and CH@800), the raw CH exhibited the highest adsorption efficiency, achieving ∼90% removal of 10 ppm TH dye at 8.5 pH and room temperature, which is higher than of its pyrolyzed samples. The adsorption kinetics of CH adsorbent was fitted best with both linear and nonlinear pseudo‐second‐order with (>0.99) R 2 value for. The CH adsorbent has also shown referability up to three successive cycles. The finding demonstrates that CH is an efficient and sustainable biosorption for TH dye removal. Its high adsorption efficiency and good regeneration ability highlight its potential as a low‐cost material for wastewater application.
