OPTIMIZING SBS & TIRE PYRO OIL MODIFIED VG 30 BITUMEN FOR SUSTAINABLE PAVEMENTS Saurabh Kulkarni, Hemant Hadole, Nikita Bhagat, Mahadeo Randive Baltic Journal of Road and Bridge Engineering, 2025 In recent years, Indian roads have experienced a significant increase in axle load and traffic volume, necessitating improved performance in top bituminous layers. While Indian guidelines recommend VG40 grade bitumen for perpetual pavements, its limited supply prompts widespread use of VG30 grade bitumen. This study explores the viability of modified VG30 bitumen, employing Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) and Tire pyro oil (TPO) as modifiers, as an alternative to VG40. Rheological tests, including Dynamic Shear Rheometer and Brookfield Viscometer, alongside morphological and chemical analyses, ascertain the optimal SBS dosage. Addition of TPO, ranging from 1% to 3%, reduces mixing and compaction temperatures. Marshall Stability and Indirect Tensile Strength tests compare strength characteristics. Sixteen perpetual pavement sections are designed based on Indian guidelines, comparing thickness, life cycle cost, and carbon dioxide emissions over five decades. Modified VG30 binder exhibits only a slight increase in thickness compared to unmodified VG40 binder, while significantly reducing life cycle costs and carbon dioxide emissions. Experimental results suggest that modified VG30 with 3% SBS, and optionally with 1% TPO, can effectively replace VG40 grade bitumen for perpetual pavements to address its supply issue.
Effect of Guar Gum Content on the Mechanical Properties of Laterite Soil for Subgrade Soil Application Shailendra Pandurang Banne, Saurabh Kulkarni, Jair Arrieta Baldovino Polymers, 2024 Using biopolymers for soil stabilization is favorable compared to more conventional methods because they are more environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and long-lasting. This study analyzes the physical properties of guar gum and laterite soil mixes. A comprehensive engineering study of guar gum-treated soil was conducted with the help of a brief experimental program. This study examined the effects of soil–guar gum interactions on the strengthening behavior of guar gum-treated soil mixtures using a series of laboratory tests. The treated laterite soil’s dry density increased marginally, while its optimum moisture content decreased as the guar gum increased. Treatment with guar gum significantly enhanced the strength of laterite soil mixtures. For laterite soil with 2% guar gum, the unsoaked CBR increased by 148% and the soaked CBR increased by 192.36%. The cohesiveness and internal friction angle increased by 93.33% and 31.52%, respectively. These results show that using guar gum dramatically improves the strength of laterite soil, offering a more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional soil additives. Using guar gum in T8 subgrade soil requires a 1395 mm pavement depth and costs INR 3.83 crores, 1.52 times more than laterite soil. For T9 subgrade soil, the depth was 1495 mm, costing INR 4.42 crores, 1.72 times more than laterite soil. This study introduces a novel approach to soil stabilization by employing guar gum, a biopolymer, to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of laterite soil. Furthermore, this study provides a detailed cost–benefit analysis for pavement applications, revealing the financial feasibility of using guar gum despite it requiring a marginally higher initial investment.
Effect of soil stabilization on design of conventional and perpetual pavement in India Stjepan Lakusic Gradjevinar, 2022 The present study compares conventional pavement and perpetual pavement in the case of ground-granulated blast-slag-stabilized black cotton soil. Ground-granulated blast slag (GGBS) can be used for pavement over weak subgrade. We added slag to soil in proportions of 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, and 40 %. After determining the engineering properties of the soil and GGBS, modified Proctor compaction and California bearing ratio tests were performed. After determining these values, six combinations for conventional pavements and perpetual pavements with treated and non-treated subgrades were designed using a mechanistic-empirical methodology. The pavements were designed using IITPAVE software. The relevance of perpetual pavements was justified based on life-cycle cost assessment and carbon dioxide emissions for a duration of 50 years. The present study concludes that for the implementation of perpetual pavements in a developing country such as India, there is a need for further study in the domain of soil stabilization as well as usage of high-stiffness base materials considering the rising cost of bitumen.
