  • Thermal and daylighting evaluation: the basic of energy efficient house design at the earliest stages
    Alfani, P Fitriaty, S M Malik
Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2023
The increase in electrical energy used in residential buildings is due to their designs being less responsive to the local climate. This research aims to analyse the implementation of energy efficient house design principles for the tropical, hilly area. The tropical, hilly area has distinctive climate characteristics compared to the lowland tropical area. Thus, it resulted in many challenges in providing internal comfort conditions for the occupants by architectural design only. Palu, Sulawesi Tengah Province of Indonesia, was selected as the case study location. The analyses were carried out by modelling three sample houses and simulating their daylighting and natural ventilation condition. Three house models were built considering several design parameters such as house orientation, geometry, plan, type and position of the openings. Simulations settings included different building materials, the number of occupants, operational schedules and electricity usage schedules. The operative temperature was used for thermal analysis. Meanwhile, spatial daylight Autonomy (sDA) of 100/50% was used for daylighting analysis. The result of the study provided the visualisations of thermal and daylighting conditions for each sample model. Design models of energy efficient houses suitable for the tropical hilly area were also recommended.
  • Socio-Ecological Adaptation of the Kaili Rai Community Settlement in Taripa Village, Sindue District
Gator Timbang, Sutrati Melissa Malik, Salhudin, Fernanda
Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2023
The multi-dimensional natural disaster that hit Sigi and Donggala districts, Palu city, on 28 September 2018, had an impact on various aspects, including the arrangement of the community settlement. The Kaili Rai ethnic settlement that was built and has grown naturally in Taripa Village, Sindue District, Donggala Regency was unavoidable from the impact of the natural disaster which prompted them to flee from their settlement to a relatively flat place in the coastal area of Sindue District. The objective of this study is to reveal the form of adaptation of the community as settlers at the foot of Mount Sidole, Taripa Village, from a sociocultural perspective and local environmental aspects, which has implications for the sustainability of the way and system of living in new locations without significant changes compared to the situation before the disaster hit them. Research on the existence and sustainability of the Kaili Rai living system was conducted with a qualitative approach to reveal sociocultural factors, combined with a quantitative approach in order to explore and reveal environmental aspects. The findings indicate that the way and system of living of the Kaili Ethnic in Taripa Village, Sindue District is very adaptive. Such adaptation is strongly influenced by cultural and social factors with positive implications for sustainable settlements.
  • Implementation of the souraja house façade on the composition of the government building façade in Palu city
    S M Malik, H Salenda, A Winarta, D R Muhamad
Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2022
As the capital city of Central Sulawesi Province, Palu has built various public buildings, especially buildings belonging to the local government, which are provided to serve the population’s needs. However, when examined more deeply, it can be seen that several government-owned public buildings were designed not to pay attention to the environmental conditions in which the building was erected both socially, culturally and the composition of the building’s constituents. One of them is the facade or the front of the building. The Souraja house, a traditional house of the Kaili tribe, which currently exists in Palu City, should become a reference for the shape of public buildings, both in overall form and only in the form of the facade composition. This study uses a rationalistic approach, which sees the truth from empirical conditions and arguments as a part of thinking construction. The rationalistic research design departs from the theoretical framework (Grand Theory). The source of the Grand theory raised in this study comes from the Souraja House building, which is the work of the traditional house of the Kaili tribe, which currently still exists in Palu City. The results of this study indicate that the three parameters of the components that make up the facade of the Souraja Traditional house, which are used in analyzing and discussing the beginning of government buildings in Palu City, are not 100% implemented, namely on the raised floor but no longer in the form of a stilt building. While the two parameters of the composition of the facade of the Souraja Traditional house used in analyzing and discussing the face of government buildings in Palu City are 100% implemented.
