Compound nuclear reaction mechanisms of light composite particles Brett V. Carlson, Roberto Capote, Mihaela Sin, Fatemeh Torabi EPJ Web of Conferences, 2025 We assess the ability of a light-composite breakup model coupled to pre-compound and compound statistical emission models to describe selected compound nuclear cross sections. The framework employed calculates elastic and nonelastic breakup differential cross sections using the post-form distorted wave Born expressions of the Ichimura-Austern-Vincent approach. This has been incorporated into the EMPIRE nuclear reaction code for the specific case of the deuteron, used in the calculations presented here. The exciton preequilibrium and Hauser-Feshbach compound-nucleus models are used to account for pre-equilibrium and equilibrium emission. The outcome of our analyses yields a satisfactory agreement between theoretical and experimental values in most cases. The analysis also permits a preliminary assessment of the importance of inelastic excitation on the cross-section predictions.
Quantum trajectories and the nuclear optical model N A Coleta da Conceição, B V Carlson, B Poirier Physica Scripta, 2023 In the context of nuclear scattering, we use the bipolar reduction of the Schrödinger equation to examine the effects of optical model absorption on incoming and outgoing scattering waves. We compare the exact solutions for these waves, obtained using a bipolar quantum trajectory-based formalism, with their approximate WKB counterparts. Aside from reducing the magnitudes of the incoming and outgoing waves, absorption smooths the variation of the potential at the turning point, reducing reflection in this region. This brings the incoming exact solution and WKB approximation into closer agreement, but tends to worsen the agreement between the outgoing solutions. Inside the turning point, the WKB approximation overestimates the inward decaying solution. The exact solution also possesses an outward going component, solely due to reflection, with no WKB counterpart.
Evaluation of the neutron spectrum at flight altitude with Geant4 using different parameterizations Maurício T Pazianotto, Claudio A Federico, Odair L Gonçalez, Brett V Carlson Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2023 Cosmic-ray-induced particles at flight altitude present an increasing concern because of the development of aircraft with high maximum cruising altitude (higher than 40 000 ft) and because of the miniaturisation of and increase in the amount of embedded electronic systems. There are different codes used to estimate the radiation field through the atmosphere, using different approaches and Monte Carlo methods. This work aims to evaluate the influence on the neutron spectra at ground and flight altitude of the parameterizations employed to describe spallation reactions and the density profile of the atmosphere. The results show that different versions of Geant4 and the data driven models used significantly change the neutron fluence rate and the ambient dose equivalent rate. The results show that the different atmospheric density profiles considered do not significantly change the neutron spectra. In this work, we also present comparisons with onboard and ground level measurements.
A systematic analysis of deuteron breakup F Torabi, B V Carlson Journal of Physics G Nuclear and Particle Physics, 2023 Inclusive breakup cross sections for deuterons incident on a wide range of nuclei at different incident energies are studied. In our analysis, we use the post-form distorted-wave-Born approximation (DWBA) to calculate the elastic and nonelastic breakup cross sections. We also calculate exciton and statistical compound-nucleus model cross sections to account for pre-equilibrium and equilibrium emissions. The calculations are performed using the code EMPIRE and are compared to the available experimental data. The comparisons of the integrated cross sections reveal a generally good agreement between the calculations and the data. However, systematic discrepancies are observed between the calculated double differential neutron and proton cross sections and the data, especially for heavier targets. Possible reasons for the disagreements between the theoretical predictions and the experimental data are discussed.
Monte Carlo evaluation of the semiclassical multi-step direct reaction series Brett V. Carlson, Emanuel V. Chimanski, Roberto Capote 16th Varenna Conference on Nuclear Reaction Mechanisms Nrm2023, 2023 We show how the multi-step direct reaction series can be evaluated using Monte Carlo methods. Nucleon-nucleon collisions occur according to the random selection of a nucleon’s attenuation factor along its classical trajectory. The particles and hole excited in a collision are selected from a local Fermi distribution. We assume that the particles continue to propagate and possibly collide again before leaving the nucleus. We assume that holes collide in place, to possibly produce other particles and holes.
