Solar-Powered Advances in Water Desalination: A Comprehensive Review of Recent Research Tareq Abdel Hameed Almajali, Firas Basim Ismail, Prem AL Gunnasegaran, Hussein A. Kazem, Saeed Mahmoud AL Shurafa, Nizar F. O. Al-Muhsen Applied Solar Energy English Translation of Geliotekhnika, 2025 Abstract Solar energy, with its vast availability and sustainability, offers diverse applications such as electricity generation, water heating, vehicle power, and support for industrial activities. However, solar energy adoption rates vary across countries due to factors such as geographical location, solar resources, policy frameworks, energy infrastructure, and market conditions. Meanwhile, freshwater scarcity is becoming a global concern. Solar water desalination, a sustainable technology utilizing solar energy to remove salt from seawater and presents a potential solution. This review paper comprehensively assesses various solar water desalination methods, primarily focusing on energy conversion efficiencies and associated costs. Solar stills, though simple and affordable, demonstrate relatively low efficiencies ranging from 30 to 50%, making them suitable for small-scale or remote applications. Conversely, solar-powered Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems exhibit lower efficiencies of approximately 6 to 10% but come with variable costs ranging from $0.5 to $4 per cubic meter (m3). Solar-powered Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) and Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) systems boast higher thermal efficiencies, ranging from 30 to 70% and 30 to 50%, respectively, but may entail higher initial investment costs. This study highlights the trade-offs between efficiency and cost, offering valuable insights for decision-makers and stakeholders in implementing solar water desalination projects.
Enhancing Photovoltaic-Thermoelectric Generator Systems Using Carbon-Based Thermal Interface Materials: A Comprehensive Review Saeed Mahmoud Al Shurafa, Firas Basim Ismail, Hussein A. Kazem, Tan Ee Sann, Tareq Abdel Hameed Almajali Nanoscale and Microscale Thermophysical Engineering, 2025 Integrating thermoelectric generators (TEG) under photovoltaic (PV) panels in PV-TEG systems holds great potential for maximizing energy utilization by collecting waste heat from PV panels while increasing efficiency. However, the presence of air gaps at contact locations due to metal surface roughness presents a substantial issue, resulting in increased thermal contact resistance (RC) and decreased system efficiency. To overcome this barrier, thermal interface materials (TIM) are used to fill air gaps, effectively decreasing RC, boosting heat transmission, homogenizing surface temperatures, and eventually increasing system efficiency. Carbon-based TIMs, notably pyrolytic graphite sheet (PGS), have emerged as very efficient replacements for conventional heat dissipation materials in electronic applications. Using PGS as a TIM can improve the overall performance of PV-TEG systems. This study provides useful insights into the elements that influence solar cell and TEG efficiency while offering a comprehensive analysis of the potential of carbon-based TIMs in enhancing PV-TEG system performance.
