Ramkrishnan R

Dr. Ramkrishnan R. is a Scientist C at the Central Academy for State Forest Service, Coimbatore, under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. Before joining government service in 2022, he served for eight years as a Senior Grade Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at Amrita University, Coimbatore. He holds a PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and specializes in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, with work spanning Himalayan seismicity, ground motion modeling, microzonation, slope stability, and erosion control.

He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications, received more than 675 citations, holds a patent, and serves as a reviewer for several international journals. His work on beach erosion control has gained national media attention, and he has received honors including the Bharat Vikas Award. He is also a keen traveler and motorcycling enthusiast.

Strong Motion Data Based Regional Ground Motion Prediction Equations for North East India Based on Non-Linear Regression Models

Existing Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPE) in practice for North East India have been developed using limited or simulated datasets of recorded ground motions. The current study presents the development of a new GMPE based on a well-established model considering actual recorded ground motion data comprising of acceleration, magnitude, and hypocentral distances. A larger dataset with magnitudes ranging from 4.2 to 6.9 and up to 640 kms, with a total of 204 recordings is used in non-linear multiple-regression. The newly developed GMPE could predict ground acceleration realistically over larger ranges of distance and magnitudes, compared to existing GMPEs.

Catastrophic hazards like landslides are generally associated with extreme hydraulic conditions. Western Ghats, India is characterized as one of the most landslide-prone areas in India, other than the Himalayas, with extreme hydrological conditions acting as the trigger. Although excessive rainfalls usually serve as the trigger, the presence of excess pore-pressure due to past rainfalls has been further identified amongst the factors leading to slope failures. Considering this, the current study is performed to identify the associated Critical Phreatic Level (CPL) triggering slope failure. To study the effect of hydraulic factors on slopes, laboratory-scale models of soil slopes are created. The simulated slopes are instrumented and the effect of change in hydrological condition is monitored in real-time until failure to identify the CPL. The obtained CPL for considered ground parameters are further validated for slope stability analyses using numerical methods, and a correlation is established for assessment of CPL using regression analysis.

Massive urbanisation and infrastructural development caused by the growing population have taken place during the last decades. This means that in a rapidly expanding world economy we are running out of land. This problem has led to the use of ground improvement techniques to enhance the usability of land masses that were once not considered suitable for the development of infrastructure. Geocell is an innovative soil stabilisation product for civil engineering and development of infrastructures. They are cell containment systems which have been produced as an easy and durable material to stabilise and protect the compaction of the soil. The environmental concern regarding the disposability of quarry dust powder (QDP), produced from production units of M-sand (Manufactured sand), is of concern to the environment. The statement that is “waste of one industry should become the raw material for another” and that drawback can be addressed effectively by using it to improve the geotechnical characteristics of the weak soil. The purpose of this study is to find the optimal geocell-layer geometry and optimum combination of QDP infills to produce less settlement at a particular load using PLAXIS 2D software. The characteristics that have been varied are quarry dust powder in infill, geocell material and frequency of loading. These parameters were used for simulations to study the response of load vs settlements and the FOS of the slope. The FOS on the slope on the terrain was found to be 4.5, a steady slope. An optimised reinforcing mattress was ultimately found out.

This article presents a combined seismic risk assessment of Mangalore city, considering seismic hazard and Land Use (LU) patterns. Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis was carried out considering different source models and attenuation relations to predict Peak Ground Acceleration at every square kilometer. LU of the area was assessed using GIS tools with the built-in supervised Gaussian maximum likelihood algorithm on processed remote sensing data from temporal Landsat images. The risk map showed the concentration of built-up area South-West, toward the sea and the seismic hazard following an increasing trend from the coast to further inland.
Development of New Ground Motion Prediction Equation for the North and Central Himalayas Using Recorded Strong Motion Data

A new region-specific Ground Motion Prediction Equation (GMPE) was developed for the North and Central Himalayas purely based on recorded strong motion data. The GMPE was generated using multiple-regression, considering ground acceleration, magnitude, and hypocentral distance. An updated larger dataset was used in the present study, making the new equation applicable to a larger magnitude range of 4.1 to 7.8 and distance range up to 1560 kms, thus overcoming a major limitation of currently available region-specific GMPEs. The new GMPE was validated and observed to predict ground acceleration more accurately with noticeably less residuals as compared to existing GMPEs.

North-East India (NEI) has a long history of devastating earthquakes due to the complicated tectonic setting of the region. A shortage of sufficient recorded time-histories from the region calls for a synthesis of accelerograms for dynamic analyses. In this study, a novel Joint Time-Frequency Analysis (JTFA) technique is adopted for the synthesis of accelerograms, considering the non-stationary behavior of earthquake waves. JTFA is used for analyzing the signals in a joint time and frequency domain to better understand its characteristics and synthesize signals without compromising its inherent characteristics like frequency content and amplitude. Synthetic accelerograms are developed using JTFA techniques for different magnitude and distance ranges between 5 to 6.8 and 0–480[Formula: see text]km and response spectra are developed. Synthesized generalized accelerograms and their response spectra are compared with actual signals in the same magnitude-distance ranges and were found to match. A comparison of the frequency contents of actual and synthetic signals was also carried out using Fourier Transforms and spectrograms (SPs) and was found to be in good agreement. Further, a comparative study of various earthquake reduction measures for NEI is carried out for a scenario earthquake using the synthesized data, and the best suitable structural input for the region is recommended.
