Additive manufacturing of polymeric lox tank liner prototype and its characterization Janardan Singh, Y. Lakshman, N. Saravanan, R. Muraleekrishnan Next Materials, 2025 Additive manufacturing (AM) has revolutionized material production by enabling the realization of complex geometries with shorter turnaround times. Engineering polymeric materials such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyetherimide (ULTEM), and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), polyamide 6 (PA-6), and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) are utilized to realise 3D-printed products with a high strength-to-weight ratio. This study attempts to develop a prototype of a liquid oxygen (LOX) tank liner as a replacement for current aluminium alloy tanks used in cryogenic stages of launch vehicles. The primary objective is to reduce the weight of the upper stages for improved payload margin. Since propellant tankages contribute significantly to the mass of upper stages, replacing heavy metallic tanks with low-density composite tanks could result in significant weight savings. To investigate the feasibility of this approach, LOX tank liner prototypes were manufactured using two different materials, polyurethane (PU) and polyamide (PA), employing additive manufacturing techniques such as stereolithography (SLA) and selective layer sintering (SLS). The mechanical properties of PU and PA materials were evaluated at room temperature and in liquid nitrogen conditions. Hydro-proof pressure testing (PPT), ultrasonic testing (UT), and non-destructive testing using X-ray were performed to identify defects in the realized 3D-printed tanks. Permeability rates were verified through helium leak checks using the sniffing method. Structural analysis was carried out to evaluate the tank liner's structural and pressure loads and determine the optimal thickness of CFRP overwrap. The findings of this study will provide insights into the potential of additive manufacturing techniques for producing lightweight composite tank liners of actual size suitable for futuristic launch vehicle applications. The mechanical properties, defect detection capabilities, permeability rates, and structural analysis results contribute to understanding the feasibility of using 3D-printed polymeric tank liners for high-end applications.
Innovative surface engineering of sustainable polymers: Toward green and high-performance materials Subramani Raja, Maher Ali Rusho, K Ch Sekhar, Kassa Suresh Kumar, K. Alagarraja, Avvaru Praveen Kumar, S. Karthikeyan, Pawan Devidas Meshram, N. Saravanan, Nagabhooshanam Applied Chemical Engineering, 2024 The development of sustainable polymers is critical to the progression of greener manufacturing processes, especially for the additive manufacturing technologies of fused deposition modeling (FDM). The study aims to explore potential application surface engineering techniques that enhance the performance of these sustainable polymers within the context of FDM. Various surface modification methods, such as plasma treatment, chemical etching, and UV irradiation, were utilized on biodegradable and recycled polymers, with the treatment process conducted under controlled conditions. Mechanical testing was done using a Tinius Olsen universal testing machine, with surface morphology analyzed through scanning electron microscopy. The outcome indicated that the tensile strength of polylactic acid improved by 15% with plasma treatment, while the thermal stability of recycled polyethylene terephthalate improved by 12% with chemical etching. Surface engineering developments on various techniques will be reviewed, particularly in optimizing them within FDM processes for different types of polymers. Different surface modifications will be compared here, analyzing aspects such as adhesion, endurance, and more overall performance. This comparison provides a fundamental outlook into the relationship between surface treatment and polymer performance, paving the way for optimization of FDM processes in sustaining material applications. These findings serve as further guidance toward making additive manufacturing much more sustainable and efficient through advanced surface engineering. The numerical improvement of material properties observed in the study will aid in further endeavors towards achieving sustainability and efficiency in additive manufacturing.
Optimization and characterization of surface treated Lagenaria siceraria fiber and its reinforcement effect on epoxy composites Saravanan N., Navin Kumar B., Bharathiraja G., Pandiyarajan R. Pigment and Resin Technology, 2023 Purpose This paper aims to investigate the resultant optimal ultimate tensile strength, elongation, flexural strength and modulus, compression strength and impact strength of fabricated alkali-treated Lagenaria siceraria fiber (LSF)-reinforced polymer matrix composite by optimizing input factors and microstructural characterization by influencing fiber length, fiber concentration and treatment condition of LSF. Design/methodology/approach The fabrication of LSF-reinforced composite specimens involved surface treatment followed by custom experimental design using a simple hand layup process. The wear analysis was performed by a multi-tribotester TR25 machine, and the developed model was validated by using statistical software Design Expert V.8 and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The surface morphology of the sample was also analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Findings The alkali treatment for LSFs had reduced the hemicellulose, and enhanced mechanical performance was observed for 30 wt.% concentration of L. siceraria in epoxy resin. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed thermal stability up to 245°C; microstructure revealed fiber entanglements in case of longer fiber length and compression strength reduction; and the surface-treated fiber composites exhibited reduced occurrences of defects and enhanced matrix–fiber bonding. Enhanced mechanical performances were observed, namely, ultimate tensile strength of 17.072 MPa, elongation of 1.847%, flexural strength of 50.4 MPa, flexural modulus of 3,376.31 GPa, compression strength of 52.154 MPa and impact strength of 0.53 joules. Originality/value The novel approach of optimizing and characterizing alkali surface-treated LSF-reinforced epoxy matrix composite was explored, varying fiber length and concentrations for specimens by empirical relations and experimental design to obtain optimal performance validated by ANOVA. Enhanced properties were obtained for: 7 mm fiber length and 30 wt.% concentration of fiber in the composite for alkali-treated fiber.
Impact of alkali treatment and fiber length on mechanical properties of new agro waste Lagenaria Siceraria fiber reinforced epoxy composites Saravanan Nagappan, Sampath Pavayee Subramani, Sathish Kumar Palaniappan, Bhuvaneshwaran Mylsamy Journal of Natural Fibers, 2022 Composite laminates are prepared based on new agro waste of 4% alkali-treated and untreated Lagenaria siceraria fiber (LSF)-reinforced epoxy resin using four different fiber lengths of 3, 5, 7, and 9 mm with five different fiber contents of 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 wt% by compression mold technique. The composite laminates were cut according to ASTM standard dimensions to test its mechanical properties like tensile, flexural, compression, and impact strength. The mechanical properties are enhanced for increase in the fiber length upto 7 mm and 30 wt% of untreated and treated fiber; however, further increase (such as fiber content and fiber length) in parameters causes decrease in mechanical properties for both treated and untreated LSF-reinforced composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of fractured composite laminates studies was carried out to analyze the fiber–matrix interaction. The composite reinforced with 7 mm fiber length and 30 wt% of alkali-treated fiber composites exhibits better mechanical properties compared to other combination.
