  • Detection of Mobile Phone Use While Driving Supported by Artificial Intelligence
Gustavo Caiza, Adriana Guanuche, Carlos Villafuerte
    Applied Sciences Switzerland, 2026
Driver distraction, particularly mobile phone use while driving, remains one of the leading causes of road traffic incidents worldwide. In response to this issue and leveraging recent technological advances and increased access to intelligent systems, this research presents the development of an application running on an intelligent embedded architecture for the automatic detection of mobile phone use by drivers, integrating computer vision, inertial sensing, and edge computing. The system, based on the YOLOv8n model deployed on a Jetson Xavier NX 16Gb—Nvidia, combines real-time inference with an inertial activation mechanism and cloud storage via Firebase Firestore, enabling event capture and traceability through a lightweight web-based HMI interface. The proposed solution achieved an overall accuracy of 81%, an inference rate of 12.8 FPS, and an average power consumption of 8.4 W, demonstrating a balanced trade-off between performance, energy efficiency, and thermal stability. Experimental tests under diverse driving scenarios validated the effectiveness of the system, with its best performance recorded during daytime driving—83.3% correct detections—attributed to stable illumination and enhanced edge discriminability. These results confirm the feasibility of embedded artificial intelligence systems as effective tools for preventing driver distraction and advancing intelligent road safety.
  • Interactive Application with Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence for Improving Pronunciation in English Learning
Gustavo Caiza, Carlos Villafuerte, Adriana Guanuche
    Applied Sciences Switzerland, 2025
Technological advances have enabled the development of innovative educational tools, particularly those aimed at supporting English as a Second Language (ESL) learning, with a specific focus on oral skills. However, pronunciation remains a significant challenge due to the limited availability of personalized learning opportunities that offer immediate feedback and contextualized practice. In this context, the present research proposes the design, implementation, and validation of an immersive application that leverages virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance English pronunciation. The proposed system integrates a 3D interactive environment developed in Unity, voice classification models trained using Teachable Machine, and real-time communication with Firebase, allowing users to practice and assess their pronunciation in a simulated library-like virtual setting. Through its integrated AI module, the application can analyze the pronunciation of each word in real time, detecting correct and incorrect utterances, and then providing immediate feedback to help users identify and correct their mistakes. The virtual environment was designed to be a welcoming and user-friendly, promoting active engagement with the learning process. The application’s distributed architecture enables automated feedback generation via data flow between the cloud-based AI, the database, and the visualization interface. Results demonstrate that using 400 samples per class and a confidence threshold of 99.99% for training the AI model effectively eliminated false positives, significantly increasing system accuracy and providing users with more reliable feedback. This directly contributes to enhanced learner autonomy and improved ESL acquisition outcomes. Furthermore, user surveys conducted to understand their perceptions of the application’s usefulness as a support tool for English learning yielded an average acceptance rate of 93%. This reflects the acceptance of these immersive technologies in educational contexts, as the combination of these technologies offers a realistic and user-friendly simulation environment, in addition to detailed word analysis, facilitating self-assessment and independent learning among students.
  • Multisensory Assistive Systems for English Language Learning through Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence
Adriana Guanuche, Cristian Remache, Juan Carlos Molina, Gustavo Caiza
Etcm 2025 9th Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting, 2025
English language proficiency has become an essential tool for today’s society due to its preeminent role as a lingua franca in international communication, scientific research, and business. This article aims to create a multisensory immersive application based on virtual reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support the English language teaching process in the skills of pronunciation and grammar, through audio recognition and navigation in immersive interactive environments. This system, driven by neural networks, can accurately identify the user’s pronunciation, to subsequently generate virtual scenarios where the student can practice and learn the grammar through the representation and interaction with virtual scenarios that were created for interactive and dynamic learning where the culture and representative places of different countries are shown to offer a new experience and greater motivation when learning a new language. Among the results obtained, it was observed that the neural network achieved an effectiveness of $94.45 \%$ in audio recognition, while in an uncontrolled environment, it reached a percentage of $\mathbf{7 5 \%}$ to $\mathbf{9 6. 1 \%}$, which reflects the robustness and accuracy of the system. In addition, students who used this technology showed an acceptance rate of $94 \%$, which evidences its high impact on the acceptance of the use of these technologies to be used in the learning process and its potential to improve different skills through immersive environments. This approach integrates advanced technology with innovative pedagogical methods, promising to transform the way students learn languages and experience cultural diversity in an increasingly connected world.
  • Immersive Haptic Technology to Support English Language Learning Based on Metacognitive Strategies
Adriana Guanuche, Wilman Paucar, William Oñate, Gustavo Caiza
    Applied Sciences Switzerland, 2025
One of the most widely used strategies for learning support is the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), due to the variety of applications and benefits they provide in the educational field. This article describes the design and implementation of an immersive application supported by Senso gloves and 3D environments for learning English as a second language in Ecuador. The following steps should be considered for the app design: (1) the creation of a classroom with characteristics similar to a real classroom and different buttons to navigate through the scenarios; (2) the creation of a virtual environment where text, images, examples, and audio are added according to the grammatical topic; (3) the creation of a dynamic environment for assessment in which multiple choice questions are interacted with, followed by automatic grading with direct feedback. The results showed that the interaction between the physical and virtual environment through navigation tests with the glove in different 3D environments achieved a complete activation and navigation rate. Teachers showed a clear interest in using the application in their classes as an additional teaching tool to complement the English language teaching process, given that it can increase motivation and memorization in students, as it is an easy-to-use application, and the 3D environments designed are attractive, which would make classes more dynamic. In addition, the availability of the application at any place and time represents a support for the current academic community as it adapts to the needs of today’s world.

ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, 2022
Nowadays, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is contributing to the education field and consequently in English learning as a foreign language. To reinforce this advantage, it is important to add the chance that technological devices allow for corrective feedback comments, in which learners can identify mistakes and correct them on their own. This study considered four types of exercises in the Canvas platform and considered three types of corrective feedback to students have the chance to confirm their correct answers or to correct their mistakes by themselves through the Canvas application. Using this mobile application on cellphones allows students to find support in grammar exercises, innovating the traditional way of learning. The goal of this article is to give corrective, non-corrective, and metalinguistic feedback so students can be engaged and participate actively in their learning. Furthermore, another objective is to compare the Canvas application and its feedback types with paper-based exercises with explicit feedback. The results show that Canvas obtained a 4.6% of improving in grammar learning and that the type of question students prefer is ordering statements with 84.80%.
