Leaf anatomy of species of Calea sect. Lemmatium (Asteraceae) with a taxonomic emphasis Maria José de Sousa Monteiro, Marcos Paulo Silva Paz, Genilson Alves dos Reis e Silva, Josiane Silva Araújo Nordic Journal of Botany, 2025 Calea sect. Lemmatium is one of five sections of Calea (Neurolaeneae, Asteraceae), containing 12 species that are morphologically similar, which makes their identification difficult to non‐experts. The current study aimed to provide an anatomical characterization of species from Calea sect. Lemmatium to support their taxonomy and contribute to the distinction and delimitation of the sections of Calea. Anatomical material was obtained from herbarium collections, re‐hydrated, sectioned by hand, clarified in 50% sodium hypochlorite, and stained with Astra blue and basic fuchsin. Characters considered relevant were petiole contour, trichome type, stomate type, petiole and midrib vascular system organization, sclereids, laticifers and cavities, druses and crystals, isobilateral and dorsiventral mesophyll, and parenchymatous and sclerenchymatous sheath extension. Additionally, sclereids and laticifers are described for the first time in Calea and tribe Neurolaeneae. Thus, our study provides support to the taxonomy of the genus and can provide information to future taxonomic studies in Asteraceae.
Leaf anatomy of seven endemic species of Glicophyllum (Malpighiaceae) in Brazil CATARINA S. LIMA, JULIANO DA SILVA LIMA, FRANCISCO S. SANTOS-FILHO, JOSIANE S. ARAÚJO Anais Da Academia Brasileira De Ciencias, 2024 Glicophyllum is well supported, presenting four homoplasies, easily differentiated from the other genera of the clade due to characteristics related to the reproductive organs, which can make the identification of their species difficult when they are not in the reproductive phase. Therefore, there are provided the leaf anatomical and morphological description of the leaf glands of seven species of Glicophyllum to assist in the identification of their species. The samples for the study were obtained from several national and international herbaria, sectioned freehand, stained with basic fuchsin - astra blue and compared through a binary matrix using the Sorensen's coefficient in the MVSP software. Among the leaf anatomical characters found, the following stand out: presence/absence of trichomes; petiole contour; contour of the main vein; organization of the mesophyll, presence/absence of bundle sheath extension and the surface of the glands. In this study, an identification key with leaf anatomical data is presented for the first time, demonstrating the applicability of leaf anatomy for the taxonomy of Glicophyllum. In the multivariate analysis, it is observed that the characteristics of leaf venation and topology of the glands are more representative to differentiate the taxa. Therefore, the data obtained can support future taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of the genus.
Understanding the anatomical diversity of leaves in the Aspicarpoid clade: New insights for Malpighiaceae systematics MILENA PEREIRA VILARINHO, ANTONIA RITA DE MORAES CÂMARA, JOÃO VICTOR DA COSTA SANTOS, JOSIANE SILVA ARAÚJO Phytotaxa, 2024 The Aspicarpoid clade represents a strongly supported group within the Stigmaphylloid lineage. The group is composed of four neotropical genera: Aspicarpa Rich., Gaudichaudia Kunth, Janusia A.Juss. and Peregrina W.R.Anderson. In this study, we studied the utility of leaf anatomy characters to support groups recovered in molecular phylogenies and define synapomorphies that can be used in future infra- and supra-generic classifications. Camarea axillaris A.St.-Hil. (1823: 10) and Cottsia Dubard & Dop (1908: 20) were used as outgroups for comparison. Dry leaf samples were re-hydrated, sectioned, stained, and analyzed using a microscope and a stereomicroscope. Characters such as presence and absence of glands, their location and morphotype, petiole and midrib contour, presence of trichomes, accessory bundles, vascular system organization and mesophyll type were utilized for species comparison, showing high taxonomic value for the group. Leaf glands, accessory bundles, sheath extension in the mesophyll and presence of druses and prismatic crystals were the most valuable characters in an evolutionary approach for the clade. Our work confirms the power of leaf anatomy as a taxonomic and evolutionary tool in Malpighiaceae Juss. (1789: 252), as well as its contribution to the delimitation of phylogenetic groups in the Aspicarpoid clade.
Contributions of leaf morphoanatomy to the taxonomy of Bronwenia (Malpighiaceae Juss.) MILENA PEREIRA VILARINHO, JOÃO VICTOR DA COSTA SANTOS, FRANCISCO SOARES SANTOS-FILHO, JOSIANE SILVA ARAÚJO Phytotaxa, 2023 Bronwenia has about 11 species whose current delimitation is the result of a complicated taxonomic history marked by recent evolutionary hypotheses in Malpighiaceae. Therefore, there is a need for approaches that contribute to circumscribing the group and distinguishing the species. Thus, the aim of this work was to prove the effectiveness of leaf anatomy in this purpose and point out the characters that distinguish the species of Bronwenia. Plant anatomy techniques were used and the coded anatomical characters were plotted in a binary matrix and interpreted in a cluster analysis, using UPGMA. The relevant characters to distinguish the taxa were: petiole contour, petiole/midrib vascular system conformation, presence or absence malpighiaceous trichomes and laticifers. While the remaining characters occur widely in the group and can be used in future approaches to distinguish Bronwenia from other related genera, including Diplopterys and Banisteriopsis, which previously constituted a single genus. Therefore, leaf anatomy represents relevance in the taxonomy of Bronwenia and can direct evolutionary hypotheses for Malpighiaceae.
Morphoanatomy of the leaf and calicinal glands of Stigmaphyllon A.Juss.
The taxonomic value of leaf anatomy for species byrsonima: A difficult genus of malpighiaceae juss. João Victor da Costa Santos, Maria de Fátima Vasconcelos de Oliveira, Francisco Soares Santos Filho, Leyde Nayane Nunes dos Santos Silva, Josiane Silva Araújo Acta Botanica Brasilica, 2020 We studied the leaf anatomy of 15 species of Byrsonima and a single species of Diacidia as an outgroup to test the relevance of leaf anatomical characters to the complicated taxonomy of this genus. We present complete anatomical descriptions for petioles and leaf blades, together with an anatomical matrix, dendrogram and an identification key for the studied taxa. The most informative characters were the presence of stomatal crest, trichome type, epidermis type, contour and conformation of the vascular system in the diaphragm and medium petiole and number of accessory bundles. The aforementioned characters revealed that the anatomy of the petioles in the genus differs from that of petioles in the outgroup taxon with regard to vascular system conformation and the absence of cortical sclereids. Furthermore, the anatomy of the leaf blade appears to be quite informative in Byrsonima, especially in synonymized species. The anatomical features evaluated here have great value for Byrsonima taxonomy. These features may be used in an evolutionary approach to the group, especially for proposing a new classification system based on morphoanatomical characters of the genus.

Taxonomic relevance of leaf anatomy in Banisteriopsis C.B. Rob. (Malpighiaceae) Josiane Silva Araújo, Rafael Felipe de Almeida, Renata Maria Strozi Alves Meira Acta Botanica Brasilica, 2020 We describe the leaf anatomy of 42 of the 60 species of the genus Banisteriopsis, one of the largest and most diverse genera of Malpighiaceae in the Cerrado domain. Our aim was to identify anatomical leaf characters useful for the taxonomy and systematics of this morphological diverse genus. Expanded leaves from herbarium specimens were rehydrated and processed according to usual anatomical methods for analysis under light microscopy. All characters were compared using the Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean algorithm and expressed in dendrograms. The most useful leaf anatomical characters were petiole contour, presence/absence of vascular bundles in the petiole, the position of the vascular bundles in the petiole, shape of the midrib, presence/absence of sheath extension, mesophyll type, and both the presence/absence and shape of leaf glands. Our study indicates that the morphological groups proposed in the literature for Banisteriopsis are natural groups.
