Brazilian AMS Radiocarbon Laboratory (LAC-UFF) and intercomparison of preliminary results with Sample Preparation Laboratory (LAPA14C - UFBA) Tárcio Henrique Ribeiro dos Santos, Maria do Rosário Zucchi, Alexandre Barreto Costa, Fabiana Monteiro de Oliveira, Kita Chaves Damasio Macario, et al. Radiocarbon, 2026 This study presents the initial results of carbon-14 dating after performing sample preparation and graphite production processes at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in an intercomparison with the same processes performed at the Radiocarbon Laboratory of the Fluminense Federal University (LAC-UFF). Both laboratories are located in Brazil. The accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) system at LAC-UFF was used for radiocarbon measurements. To verify any possible contamination sources during sample preparation, we initially performed swipe tests at UFBA, which were subsequently processed and the graphite samples were produced at LAC-UFF. After UFBA, several reference materials (IAEA-C1, -C2, -C6, -C9, and OXII standards) were prepared and converted into graphite. In addition, the sample material was first partially prepared at UFF and UFBA and then analyzed with the AMS system at LAC-UFF. Subsamples were prepared for additional measurements of the δ13C composition with an elemental analyzer coupled to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (EA–IRMS) in LFNA-UFBA to study the isotopic fractionation and yield of the graphitization reaction. The obtained values closely aligned with the reference values, demonstrating reproducibility and quality and indicating minimal contamination during chemical and graphitization processes. In the future, samples from different matrices will be prepared at UFBA for application in paleoenvironmental and archaeological studies.
A SCIENTOMETRIC STUDY OF FORAMINIFERAL RESEARCH IN BRAZIL Beatriz Lima Vieira, Letícia Rizzetto Patrocínio, Douglas Villela de Oliveira Lessa, Doriedson Ferreira Gomes Journal of Foraminiferal Research, 2021 Scientometrics is a field of study that involves measuring and analyzing scientific literature and can be a valuable tool to assess and reveal major gaps in national scientific production. Among the major challenges for Brazilian science is the development of research in the extensive national marine realm. This paper provides a scientometric survey of papers involving foraminiferal research in Brazil. The metrics utilized were papers listed in “Capes Portal” and “Scopus” databases up to the year of 2019. A total of 324 papers were found and 177 were selected based upon criteria established. A generalized additive model (GAM) was used to establish a relationship between publications and time. Studies involving foraminifera increased in Brazil from 1952 to 2019. Most studies have been conducted in the southeast region. We identified the need for more research on foraminifera to be carried out in the Brazilian continental margin, especially in the north and northeast regions of the country.
First human impacts and responses of aquatic systems: A review of palaeolimnological records from around the world Nathalie Dubois, Émilie Saulnier-Talbot, Keely Mills, Peter Gell, Rick Battarbee, et al. Anthropocene Review, 2018 Lake sediments constitute natural archives of past environmental changes. Historically, research has focused mainly on generating regional climate records, but records of human impacts caused by land use and exploitation of freshwater resources are now attracting scientific and management interests. Long-term environmental records are useful to establish ecosystem reference conditions, enabling comparisons with current environments and potentially allowing future trajectories to be more tightly constrained. Here we review the timing and onset of human disturbance in and around inland water ecosystems as revealed through sedimentary archives from around the world. Palaeolimnology provides access to a wealth of information reflecting early human activities and their corresponding aquatic ecological shifts. First human impacts on aquatic systems and their watersheds are highly variable in time and space. Landscape disturbance often constitutes the first anthropogenic signal in palaeolimnological records. While the effects of humans at the landscape level are relatively easily demonstrated, the earliest signals of human-induced changes in the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems need very careful investigation using multiple proxies. Additional studies will improve our understanding of linkages between human settlements, their exploitation of land and water resources, and the downstream effects on continental waters.
