This study assesses the scientific impact and challenges facing the Rede de Coleções Biológicas da Universidade Federal de Sergipe (RCB-UFS), a regional assemblage that documents both extinct and extant flora, funga, and fauna of the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Through a bibliometric analysis of 1454 publications and training programmes linked to RCB-UFS curators, we found that 30% used collection data, with peak research productivity occurring between 2013 and 2014. However, a decline in activities after 2018 corresponds to reduced funding and inadequate storage conditions, jeopardizing the integrity of specimens. Notably, only the Herbarium (ASE) and Fungus Collection (ISE) are fully digitized, whereas other collections continue to rely on outdated methods, hindering accessibility. Significant gaps in Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) records for locally common species highlight systemic failures in data mobilization, even within national museums. We emphasize the urgency of institutionalizing departmental collections, adopting digital tools (e.g. Specify), and aligning efforts with global biodiversity networks [GBIF and the Sistema de Informação sobre a Biodiversidade Brasileira (SiBBr)] to ensure preservation and compliance with findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) principles. Despite resource constraints, these collections are indispensable for research, teaching, outreach activities, and conservation efforts. This underscores the necessity for policy reforms and sustained investment in the biodiversity infrastructure of Brazil.
The most cosmopolitan freshwater gastropod invades the Lower São Francisco River: first record of Physella acuta in Sergipe Caio Correia Régis-Silva, Leonardo Cruz da Rosa, Ana Paula Siqueira Dornellas Biota Colombiana, 2025 Biological invasion and habitat modification are major drivers of biodiversity loss. River damming, in particular, leads to hydrological, limnological, and habitat disruptions, and facilitates the introduction, establishment and spread of alien species. In Brazil, most alien freshwater mollusk species have been observed in reservoirs. This study documents the first occurrence of the highly widespread exotic freshwater gastropod Physella acuta (Physidae) in Sergipe, Brazil. In February 2019, individuals of P. acuta were observed along the margin of the Xingó reservoir. The individuals were photographed in situ and collected for identification in the laboratory. Results confirm the first occurrence of P. acuta in Sergipe, expanding its known range in Brazil and updating the list of the invasive species in both Sergipe and the Lower São Francisco River.

Unveiling the Understudied: A Look at Phylogenetic Research on Mollusks in Brazil Ana Paula Dornellas, Cristiane Xerez Barroso, Rodrigo Cesar Marques Papeis Avulsos De Zoologia, 2024 Phylogenies are essential for organizing knowledge on biological diversity, structuring classifications, and providing insights into evolutionary events. Worldwide phylogenetic studies on mollusks emerged in the late 1980s, while in Brazil, phylogenetic analyses of mollusks started around 2000. For unknown reasons, phylogenies of lower hierarchical taxa, such as subfamilies, tribes, and genera, are not common in Malacology. Here, we analyzed articles published by malacologists and evaluated the proportion of alpha taxonomic reviews compared to phylogenetic systematic studies conducted at Brazilian institutions and worldwide. Our searches were performed using the Web of Science and Lattes Platform databases for Brazilian studies. We found 537 systematic/taxonomic papers, of which 11% included an explicit phylogenetic analysis. Additionally, 31 of these studies described a new genus or higher taxon, but only seven included phylogenetic inferences to support taxonomic decisions. The remaining 24 studies relied on alpha taxonomic classification, focusing primarily on conchological features of group-related units. We observed that publications worldwide describing higher taxa based on phylogenetic systematics began in the 1970s, with their proportion increasing over the years. The few phylogenetic analyses published after Willi Hennig’s cladistics suggest that malacologists at Brazilian institutions have not established a tradition of Phylogenetic Systematics for studies on molluscan diversity.
Teledentistry Applied to Health and Education Outcomes: Evidence Gap Map Júlia Nascimento da Silva Mulder, Marcelo Ramos Pinto, Isabelle Aníbal, Ana Paula Dornellas, Deise Garrido, Camila Huanca, Ana Estela Haddad, Carmen Verônica Mendes Abdala Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2024 Background Teledentistry is a field of activities that comprises information and communication technologies (ICTs) applied to dentistry, including the exchange of clinical information, patient care, and the use of educational strategies across remote distances. Its use has grown progressively over the past decades—intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic—and has been improving the provision of dental services and educational strategies ever since. Objective This evidence gap map (EGM) study aims to present a collection of systematic reviews (SRs) with meta-analyses to answer the question “What are the applications of teledentistry in dental services and dental education?” by identifying gaps and current evidence on the improvement of health care and education. Methods The EGM methodology has been developed by the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information and is based on the concept created by the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation. Embase, PubMed, and Virtual Health Library databases were used for the literature research, using terms for teledentistry associated with eHealth, dental education, and oral health care. The data obtained from the included studies were then characterized in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, with a matrix containing 8 intervention groups (combined interventions, e-learning and tele-education, teleconsultation and teleservice, telemonitoring, telediagnosis, telescreening, ICTs, and artificial intelligence) and 8 outcome groups (diagnosis accuracy, education and professional training, user behavior, clinical practice, patient-centered outcomes, clinical outcomes, health services management, and access to health services). The quality of the studies was assessed using AMSTAR2 (A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews). The visual analytics platform Tableau (Salesforce) was used to graphically display the confidence level, number of reviews, health outcomes, and intervention effects. Results The confidence level obtained by the criteria applied was high for 28% (19/68) of the studies, moderate for 6% (4/68), low for 15% (10/68), and critically low for 51% (35/68). Among the interventions, the ICT group stood out with 182 (36.8%) out of 494 associations, followed by interventions with e-learning and tele-education (n=96, 19.4% of associations), telediagnosis (n=67, 13.6%), and combined interventions (n=53, 10.7%). Most of the outcomes were aimed at education and professional training (97/494, 19.6% of associations), patient-centered outcomes (74/494, 15%), and health services management (60/494, 12.1%). Conclusions This EGM presents an overview of the contributions of teledentistry in patient care, health services, clinical practice, and education. The study results may help guide future research and policy decisions and serve as a convenient virtual tool for accessing valuable evidence-based information on teledentistry.

Leite Zoologia, 2024 The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil ( CTFB ) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). A novel questionnaire to perform teletriage of dental emergencies in children: A before-and-after study nested within a randomized clinical trial Ana Paula Dornellas, João Vitor Marques, Isabelle Aníbal Oliveira dos Santos, Marcelo Ramos, Júlia Mulder, Ana Estela Haddad F1000research, 2023 Background: This will be a before-and-after study nested within a randomized clinical trial. Its objective will be to analyze the effectiveness of a teleconsultation and validate a questionnaire for performing teletriage in dental urgency/emergency situations in children aged 3 to 13, whose parents will have signed a free and informed consent form, and who have had full access to the internet. Methods: The Questionnaire for Teletriage of Emergencies and Urgencies in Pediatric Dentistry (QuesT-Odontoped)—will be validated by applying it to 140 randomized child parents/guardians. After validation, another 260 children seeking emergency dental care in the municipality of Carangola, Minas Gerais, Brazil, will receive a remote consultation, be randomized, and then allocated into two groups: G1, teleconsultation, and G2, teleconsultation and face-to-face consultation (immediately after the former) with a blinded evaluator, involving anamnesis and conventional clinical examination. The G2 sample will be used in the before-after study. Both groups will be followed-up for 7 and 14 days using pain and quality-of-life scales, applied at baseline and after each follow-up period. Clinical follow-up will be carried out after 12 and 24 months to assess the outcome of the tooth that had been indicated for treatment in the teletriage. The Mann-Whitney test will be used to assess pain; Student's t test or the Mann-Whitney test will be used to assess quality of life and the number of missing teeth after 24 months; and Poisson's regression analysis will be used to assess the influence of other variables. The significance level will be set at 5%. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study expects to confirm the hypothesis that remote urgency consultation (teletriage), through a validated questionnaire, will be able to define the planning of the clinical situation, reducing the chance of displacements and progression of infection, helping to eliminate patient pain and discomfort.

Simone Zoologia, 2023 The expression ‘you need to know to conserve’ is a well-known cliche among biologists. Documenting the richness of a group of organisms is the first step towards understanding biodiversity and preparing efficient conservation plans. In this context, many efforts have been made to quantify the number of species on Earth and estimate the number of species still unknown to science. A few countries have complete and integrated databases estimating the approximate number of species recorded for their territory, particularly in the Global South. In Brazil, a country of continental dimensions, revealing the richness of the second most diverse clade of invertebrates (=Mollusca) has been a goal of taxonomists. Recently, in an unprecedented, collective, and integrated effort among Brazilian malacologists, it was possible to estimate how many valid species of molluscs are there in Brazil. In this effort, more than 30 mollusc experts joined together to update the Taxonomic Catalogue of the Brazilian Fauna (TCBF), a governmental website that allows a quick and real-time updating of all Metazoan. So far, more than 5,000 updates have been made in TCBF, indicating the presence of 3,552 valid species of molluscs in Brazil, distributed among the main clades as follows: Caudofoveata (10 spp.), Solenogastres (6 spp.), Polyplacophora (35 spp.), Scaphopoda (43 spp.), Cephalopoda (92 spp.), Bivalvia (629 spp.) and Gastropoda (2,737 spp.). The present study, in addition to demonstrating for the first time the richness of Brazilian molluscs, also presents the state of the art of this important phylum of invertebrates highlighting its most representative and neglected groups.
