Journal on Efficiency and Responsibility in Education and Science, 2025
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a physical-sports activity program in nature on life satisfaction, emotional intelligence, and anxiety in university students during COVID-19 mobility restrictions. Methods: A controlled trial was conducted involving 40 students from the Faculty of Sport Sciences, randomly assigned to either an experimental group (EG; n = 20) or a control group (CG; n = 20). The EG participated in an intervention program based on outdoor physical sports activities, while the CG did not engage in any additional activities. The intervention was implemented within the context of restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and assessments were conducted before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the program. Results: The analyses revealed statistically significant improvements in the experimental group in life satisfaction, emotional attention, and state anxiety compared to the control group. No significant differences were found in emotional clarity, emotional repair, or trait anxiety. Conclusion: The results suggest that engaging in physical sports activities in nature, even under confinement circumstances, positively affects life satisfaction and certain aspects of emotional intelligence and anxiety in university students.
  • Bibliometric Analysis of Anxiety and Physical Education in Web of Science—A Performance and Co-Word Study
    Josué González-Ruiz, Antonio Granero-Gallegos, José-Antonio Marín-Marín, Antonio José Moreno-Guerrero
    Pediatric Reports, 2024
This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the concepts ‘physical edu- cation’ and ‘anxiety’ (PHYEDU_ANX) in the Web of Science (WoS) database. Background/Objectives: No previous biblio- metric studies were found that addressed this intersection, so this research is a pioneering exploration of this knowledge gap. The aim of the study is to examine the presence of both concepts in the scientific literature, identifying their trends, approaches, and future prospects. Methods: For this purpose, the methodology of co-word analysis was used. Results: The results of the study show that research on PHYEDU and ANX has traditionally focused on three main areas: motivation, exercise, and depression. In this first period, the focus was on the problem (ANX, depression…), Conclusions: whereas nowadays, research focuses on the subjects who suffer from it, mainly adolescents and students. The study suggests that future research in this field will focus on the areas of satisfaction, intervention, and association. This research also answers questions relevant to the field, such as which institutions or countries are the most prolific publishers of PHYEDU_ANX, as well as the most cited authors in this area of study.

    Clinical Nutrition Open Science, 2024
Summary: The global rise in life expectancy poses challenges for individuals in maintaining independence, health, and quality of life. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL), a key indicator encompassing physical and mental well-being, is crucial for population health monitoring. Regular physical activity (PA), especially muscle-strengthening routines and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD), positively influence HRQoL. Understanding the link between muscular strength and HRQoL is essential for effective physical activity interventions. This study explores the association between self-perceived muscular strength (MS), HRQoL, MD, and sports habits in older adults. The study followed a cross-sectional, descriptive and comparative design, with a sample of 433 physically active Spanish subjects aged 41 to 80. Stratified by MS levels, the high-level group (n = 210; 74.76% men; 57.00 years old (SD: 8.28), and the low level (n = 223; 51.50%; 71.30% men; 55.64 years (SD: 8.56). Self-reported data on MS, HRQoL, MD and PA were collected using the Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP 30), Health-Related Quality of Life (SF-36), Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) and Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity Questionnaire (RAPA-Q) questionnaires, respectively. An ad-hoc questionnaire captured sports habits and sociodemographic data. The higher MS group exhibited superior physical function (P = 0.002, d = 0.16), physical role (P = 0.023, d = 0.22), general health (P < 0.001, d = 0.61), vitality (P < 0.001, d = 0.52), and mental health (P < 0.001, d = 0.29), along with stronger adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (P < 0.001, d = 0.31). Logistic regression models indicated that a high MS level is associated with engagement in maintenance sports (ORcr = 1.71, 95% CI 1.17–2.50, P = 0.005), practicing 3 or more sports (ORadj = 1.78, 95% CI 0.95–3.36, P = 0.028), leading a very active lifestyle (ORadj = 1.96, 95% CI 1.32–2.94, P < 0.001), and adherence to MD (ORadj = 1.64, 95% CI 1.10–2.45, P < 0.016).Engaging in diverse sports, giving priority to maintenance activities and including daily muscle-strengthening routines beyond WHO guidelines, correlates with higher self-perceived strength in older adults. This, in turn, aligns with an elevated quality of life encompassing both physical and mental health, as well as increased adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. Consideration of these factors is crucial when prescribing physical activity for this population and designing institutional health programs.

Journal of Human Sport and Exercise, 2024
This research conducts a comparative study between the sports models of the United Kingdom (UK) and Spain, emphasizing the complexity of these systems and the need for a multidimensional analysis. The objective of analysing the most important characteristics and differences between the Spanish sports model and structure and the UK sports model, the leading exponent due to its efficiency in the development of sports practice and in obtaining international sports results, to determine possible improvements. To carry out this study, a comparative analysis of the sports models of both countries has been made from a political-sports perspective, and the study of the administrative-organizational structure of sport and the legal regulations that support it, through a mixed design for the analysis of different qualitative dimensions. The most significant conclusions are that in the United Kingdom, a successful transformation has been achieved with a focus on efficiency, public investment, and private partnerships, while in Spain, sporting results have been maintained without a clear strategy, suggesting the need for a re-evaluation of its model. Moreover, the stronger associative culture and a higher number of qualified professionals in the United Kingdom are significant advantages. In conclusion, the United Kingdom's sports model is considered more developed and efficient, highlighting the importance of comprehensive planning and collaboration between public and private entities as key factors for sporting success.
  • Spanish women athletes’ performance in the Summer Olympic Games history

Journal of Human Sport and Exercise, 2020
In this study, an analysis was made of the qualitative and quantitative evolution of the participation and results obtained by the Spanish athletes throughout the Olympic Games, for which their records were compared to those of the men's team from Paris 1900 to Rio 2016. During the study, the growing weight of Spanish women athletes was analysed, resulting in the Women and Sport programme (2007), which seems to have been a determining factor in the improvement of the performance of Spanish women athletes, which surpassed that of the men's team in the last two editions, for the first time in history and in a consecutive manner. The data revealed a growing weight of women, with a historical representation much lower in the Olympic Games (less than 14% until Barcelona 1992) and significantly lower than men from the same (beginning to be more than 30%). This progression has been accompanied by a greater value in the variable weight of the medals, this fact was accentuated in the last editions of London 2012 (65%) and Rio de Janeiro 2016 (60%). It is clear from the results that there is plenty of room for improvement in women's sport. Empowering Spanish female athletes, increasing social and economic recognition, and identifying which are the differential factors that make them more efficient with respect to the male team, can optimize strategies and results in the third sector of sport in Spain.

Mega-sport events create a new image of the host country, attracting viewers and the media (Santo, 2005; Cornelissen and Swart, 2006). The economic impact of an event can be defined as the net economic change in the host country that derives from the expenditure attributed to the event (Crompton, 1995). Since one of the most important benefits are the permanent benefits in the city (Witt, 1988) as the improvement of the facilities or the image of the country. In relation to the tourism of a big event there is a moderate increase of the internal business tourism in a city during the development of the event (OECD, 2012). Thus, the city increases its investment potential and commercial activity (Avison Young, 2003). The objective of the present study was to analyze the economic impact generated by the attendees in the city of Granada during the Universiade Granada 2015.
  • Analysis and evaluation of the United Kingdom and Spain's sport models

Journal of Human Sport and Exercise, 2019
In this study, we have undertaken an analysis of the status of Spanish and British sport models. Sport has become a major socio-economic marvel of the modern world, with broad media coverage and both active and passive participation. Sporting achievement, the public image of many countries, is a top priority for the governments of developed nations and represents a goal of general interest. Using data analysis, we have examined the reality of the sport models in both countries through sportive variables, as well as the financials behind the sporting economy in the last 5 Olympic Games. The data reveals a more efficiency model in UK and a need of change if Spain wants to keep its current level of achievement internationally, where the current model requires a review of its structure and funding sources, public or private, and the modernisation of the federated management model that must be preserved and encouraged through (non-profit) organisations that benefit from a favourable tax system, such as the Sports Federations.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of a recreational general physical activity program with moderate intensity and short duration on blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors (BMI, cholesterol, Rest Heart Rate, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides) in hypertensive patients older than 50years. DESIGN: Non-randomised pre-post design, quasi-experimental study. LOCATION: Íllora, Granada, Spain. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 60 subjects aged 50-75years taking part in the Health Hypertensive Program in the Medical Centre were selected. INTERVENTION: A recreational general physical activity program, mainly aerobic capacity, of 4weeks duration, 3days/week, and an intensity of 45-55% HR Reserve. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: SBP, DBP, HR, BMI, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, TG, and Glucose. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Statistically significant decreases (P<.05) were observed in BMI (-0.51%; 95%CI: 30.26 to 31.93units), HR (-5.57beats/min; 95%CI: 68.76 to 71.73beats/min), SBP (-14.82mmHg; 95%CI: 131.57 to 137.52mmHg), DBP (-5.33mmHg; 95%CI: 78.94 to 83.68mmHg), Glucose (-7.63mg/dL; 95%CI: 125.06 to 153.73mg/dL) and REGICOR risk (-20.46%; 95%CI: 5.45 to 6.90%). Statistically significant increases were observed in HDL (+2.82mg/dl; 95%CI: 46.78 to 52.11mmHg), and TG (+8.27mg/dl; 95%CI: 133.89 to 152.60mg/dL). Men had a wider variation in HR and DBP, and women in SBP (P<.05). Subjects with baseline SBP≥160mmHg experienced greater declines in HR, SBP, DBP, Glucose and TG (-10.67beats/min, -31mmHg, -8.27mmHg, -10.86mg/dL, and 34.66mg/dL, respectively) than those with an initial SBP<160mmHg, where there was an increase in HDL and a decrease in LDL. After this program, improvements in BP and other cardiovascular risk factors were obtained in hypertensive subjects over 50years.
