Iberian Conference on Information Systems and Technologies Cisti, 2021
Recent advances in biosensing technology have allowed for a wider access to sophisticated data gathering tools, such as electroencephalography. These devices have the potential to be applied in several fields of study. In this paper, we investigate the application of a low-cost electroencephalography device in the context of the treatment of aphasia, a neurological condition that compromises the ability to communicate. Specifically, we aim to aid rehabilitation programs, allowing continual and online monitoring of the working memory capacity of aphasic patients. Evidence suggests that the main cause of difficulties in communication within aphasia lie in the deterioration of the ability to store and process data in the short term. We propose an analysis technique based on Event-Related Potentials and inferential statistics to provide a general score of working memory capacity. Preliminary results indicate that a low-cost, portable and wireless electroencephalography device is able to properly capture brain signals, which are then made available to a station that is responsible for analyzing and displaying the processed information to the rehabilitation professional.
  • Measuring working memory usage on aphasic individuals and analysis of emotional valence through electroencephalography

Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine Update, 2021
Recent studies discuss the use of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) in medicine, more specifically in the treatment of post-stroke conditions. Those studies seek to develop therapeutic, diagnostic, and rehabilitation strategies to provide a better quality of life. One of those approaches consists of stimulating working memory (WM) usage, which is closely related to language-processing observed in individuals with aphasia. Aphasia is a health condition, usually developed from a stroke, that compromises both oral and written communication skills. In this work, a low-cost non-invasive signal acquisition system based on electroencephalography (EEG) was used to analyze short-term changes in the spectral properties of the brain. An n-back application was developed to attend specific demands stimulating the working memory load during the experiments. As a result, it was possible to explore brain activity by performing the power spectral density analysis of theta (4–8 Hz), alpha (8–12 Hz) and beta (13–29 Hz) waves. Wavelets were used to perform time-frequency analysis. It was possible to verify that working memory could be activated for a longer period of time through the sessions. Besides, the evaluation of users' emotional valence was simultaneously developed to identify whether the user has a positive or negative emotional state. Four aphasic volunteers, two non-aphasic individuals and a neuropsychologist participated in the experience. This study affords preliminary results to aphasia treatment based on electroencephalography, being a pioneer experience in Brazil.
  • Subjective well-being: Linear relationships to character strengths
Catiane Oliveira, Maiana Farias Oliveira Nunes, Eduardo José Legal, Ana Paula Porto Noronha
    Avaliacao Psicologica, 2016
Subjective Well-Being: Linear Relationships to Character Strengths Subjective well-being has been studied in relation to strengths and virtues.Principal references from Positive Psychology propose six virtues and 24 strengths, whereas subjective well-being is appraised by life satisfaction, positive and negative affects. This study aimed to analyze the association between the level of character strengths and subjective well-being.The authors used two scales, namely the Subjective Well-being Scale (EBES) and the Strengths Scale, with 237 university students. All strengths correlated significantly with at least one aspect of subjective well-being.Negative affect was significantly correlated to only two strengths: creativity and vitality.Life satisfaction items showed 16 significant correlations, and the general factor of subjective well-being also showed 16 significant correlations. The results have partially confirmed the theoretical assumptions. The authors discuss the influence of cultural aspects and the need to empirically test the assumptions of Positive Psychology.
  • Body dissatisfaction and common mental disorders in adolescents

    Revista Paulista De Pediatria, 2012
