Non-transferred DC plasma arc method for Al2O3 nanoparticles synthesis Imam Sholahuddin, Lilis Yuliati, Djarot B. Darmadi, Rudy Soenoko Results in Engineering, 2025 • A new real-time monitoring approach enables Al 2 O 3 synthesis controlled via NTDC plasma arc. • Post-synthesis analysis revealed the atomization mechanisms in the plasma synthesis of Al 2 O 3 . • Reproducible γ/δ/θ -Al 2 O 3 NPs phases emerge across multiple cycles in a single synthesis round. This study presents a new real-time monitoring approach for the non-transferred direct current (NTDC) plasma arc production of Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs). Observations of plasma ignition, ember dispersion, and plasma surface temperature during aluminum feeding demonstrate successful thermal decomposition, driven by substantial energy absorption that enables particle fragmentation and underpins atomization. Spectral emission study verifies the generation of gaseous Al-O, with excitation wavelengths for Al–O formations detected in the 450–550 nm range, surpassing the aluminum emission at 396.1 nm, indicating complete oxidation, corroborated by consistent findings from EDX and XRD investigations. During the feeding process, the emission temperature attains 5640 K, whilst the surface temperature is 503 K, indicating cooling rates exceeding 10 2 K/s, enabling initial phase estimation. Post-synthesis characterization (SEM and TEM) verifies the effective transformation of spherical Al 2 O 3 NPs (20 to 130 nm). Observed NPs behaviors—such as expansion, shell breakup, internal growth, and electrostatic adhesion—underline the nanoscale atomization pathway. EDX and XRD elemental analyses indicate that the minor presence of Cu (2.07–3.33 %) suggests electrode erosion. The phase fractions obtained from Rietveld refinement calculations reveal the presence of γ-Al 2 O 3 (26.6 %), δ-Al 2 O 3 (60.8 %), and θ-Al 2 O 3 (12.6 %). These variations are attributed to localized temperature gradients that result in a non-uniform cooling surface of the NPs, thereby promoting the formation of these metastable phases. These Al 2 O 3 phases consistently emerge across multiple cycles within a single synthesis round with minor discrepancies, emphasizing the method's potential for reproducible, controlled and scalable nanoparticle production and its possible extension to other metal oxides.
Impact of Mendong fiber–epoxy composite interface properties on electric field frequency exposure Heru Suryanto, Yudi Surya Irawan, Rudy Soenoko, Joseph Selvi Binoj, Azlin Fazlina Osman, Hakimah Osman, Jibril Maulana, Alamry Ali Polymer Composites, 2023 This research investigates the effects of the frequency of the external electric field during the curing process on the interfacial properties of epoxy composites reinforced by Mendong fiber. Epoxy was used as a matrix with cycloaliphatic amine as a curing agent. The AC electric field by frequencies of 1, 2, and 3 kHz and strength of 750 V/cm were applied during the curing process. The functional groups, structure, interface properties, and morphology of treated epoxy were observed using Fourier‐transform infrared, x‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and pull‐out test, respectively. The result indicates that after treatment with an electric field of 1 kHz, new peaks were observed in the epoxy diffractogram at the angle of 6.2° and 12.3°, change in morphology, the wettability properties of epoxy were increased and interface shear strength was improved. Increasing the frequency of electric fields results in more damage to the interface and subsequently reduces the shear strength at the interface.Highlights Interface properties of the composite after curing in an electric field characterized. Exposure to electric field frequency during curing changed epoxy properties. Shear strength of Mendong fiber/epoxy varied post‐exposure to the electric field.
ASSESSMENT OF ASSEMBLY PROCESS COMPLEXITY USING MATERIAL COEFFICIENTS FOR HANDLING AND INSERTION Nelce Dominggas Muskita, Rudy Soenoko, Achmad As’ad Sonief, Moch. Agus Choiron Eastern European Journal of Enterprise Technologies, 2023 Complexity principles are very important for reducing difficulty while at the same time continuously attaining the requirements of the product, process, and system. A crucial factor affecting the complexity of assembly is material selection. The material used for a product will be closely linked to the handling and insertion process. In a previous study, the methods used to select materials and assembly processes have been developed separately. In this study, those methods will be developed together into a single entity with respect to the complexity of each process. Scientific information about this matter has yet to be revealed, so it still requires intensive study. Hence, the study aims to promote a new way to measure the complexity of parts assembly by examining the material selection parameters. The proposed method involves material coefficients in establishing an assembly complexity index and consists of two phases. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the suggested design comprehensively, which uses three material variants in piston products to calculate the complexity index of the assembly process. Variants with a small complexity index are ideal and facilitate the assembly process. The study creates a material coefficient model to specify the assembly process, where each component has various coefficient values. The material coefficient describes the value of material characteristics related to the assembly method, namely the process of handling and insertion. The material selection requires a clear understanding of the assembly requirements for each component. The related material characteristics are density, fracture toughness, Young’s modulus, elastic limit, tensile strength, elongation, and hardness. Assessment of the complexity index using methods from previous studies obtained 6.02. Using the present method, 5.777 were obtained for variant 1 and 5.769 for the second variant. The mean complexity value is compatible with the material coefficient and assembly time
Investigation of Artocarpus Heteropyllus peel extract as non-toxic corrosion inhibitor for pure copper protection in nitric acid Ira Kusumaningrum, Rudy Soenoko, Eko Siswanto, Femiana Gapsari Case Studies in Chemical and Environmental Engineering, 2022 Artocarpus Heteropyllus Peel as non-toxic fruit waste contained some antioxidants. Peel extract of Artocarpus Heteropyllus could used as inhibitor to reduced corrosion rate. In this study, artocarpus heteropyllus peel extract was used as inhibitor corrosion to protect pure copper in 1 M HNO3. The inhibitor concentration was varied of 0–800 ppm. The measurement of corrosion rate was conducted by applying potentiodynamic polarization methods. The inhibitor performance, isotherm adsorption the thermodynamic parameter and kinetic activation energy were analyzed. Artocarpus heteropyllus peel extract was mixed inhibitor type and tended to anodic inhibitor type. The highest inhibitor efficiency was 98%. It occurred at its concentration of 800 ppm and temperature of 25 °C. Isothermic adsorption pattern followed the Frumkin adsorption isotherm equation. Inhibitor molecules were adsorbed on the pure copper surface physically.
THE EFFECT OF MILLING TIME ON THE ALUMINA PHASE TRANSFORMATION IN THE AMCs POWDER METALLURGY REINFORCED BY SILICA-SAND-TAILINGS Sukanto, Wahyono Suprapto, Rudy Soenoko, Yudy Surya Irawan Eureka Physics and Engineering, 2022 This study aims to determine the effect of milling time and sintering temperature parameters on the alumina transformation phase in the manufacture of Aluminium Matrix Composites (AMCs) reinforced by 20 % silica sand tailings using powder metallurgy technology. The matrix and fillers use waste to make the composites more efficient, clean the environment, and increase waste utilization. The milling time applied to the Mechanical Alloying (MA) process was 0.5, 6, 24, 48, and 96 hours, with a ball parameter ratio of 15:1 and a rotation of 93 rpm. Furthermore, hot compaction was carried out using a 100 MPa two-way hydraulic compression machine at a temperature of 300 °C for 20 minutes. The temperature variables of the sintering parameter process were 550, 600 to 650 °C, with a holding time of 10 minutes. Characterization of materials carried out included testing particle size, porosity, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), SEM-Image, and SEM-EDX. The particle measurement of mechanical alloying processed, using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) instrument and based on XRD data using the Scherrer equation, showed a relatively similar trend, decreasing particle size occurs when milling time was increased 0.5 to 24 hours. However, when the milling time increases to 48 and 96 hours, the particle size tends to increase slightly, due to cold-weld and agglomeration when the Mechanical Alloying is processed. The impact is the occurrence of the matrix and filler particle pairs in the cold-weld state. So, the results of XRD and SEM-EDX characterization showed a second phase transformation to form alumina compounds at a relatively low sintering temperature of 600 °C after the mechanical alloying process was carried out with a milling time on least 24 hours
ANALYSIS OF TENSILE STRENGTH, CRYSTALLINITY, CRYSTALLITE SIZE, AND THERMAL STABILITY OF POLYPROPYLENE JOINED BY FRICTION STIR WELDING Bambang Kusharjanta, Rudy Soenoko, Anindito Purnowidodo, Irawan Surya Journal of Applied Engineering Science, 2022 This paper aims to investigate the joining of polypropylene using friction stir welding (FSW). FSW parameters were the rotation speed of 620 rpm, the travel speed of 7.3 mm/min, and 13 mm/min. The tensile test was using a universal testing machine, and the results of the tensile test were related to the degree of crystallinity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) examined the crystallite size and degree of crystallinity. The thermal analysis was using thermogravimetry analysis/ differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC). This paper explained the degree of crystallinity effects on the thermal stability at the weld nugget area due to travel speed. The findings showed FSW with a travel speed of 7.3 mm/min had a bigger crystallite size and degree of crystallinity than that with a travel speed of 13 mm/min. There was a fusion of crystals also recrystallization occurred. It was an effect of the difference in the length of time exposed to heat during the FSW process. A travel speed of 7.3 mm/min sample had high tensile strength because it obtained sufficient heat for an extra complete joint. In terms of thermal stability, the specimen with a lower travel speed showed a higher stability level than the specimen with a higher travel speed in the higher degree of crystallinity.
Jackfruit peel extract as environmentally safe inhibitor for carbon steel protection in acidic solution Ira Kusumaningrum, Rudy Soenoko, Eko SIswanto, Femiana Gapsari Journal of New Materials for Electrochemical Systems, 2022 The addition of corrosion inhibitors into the acidic environment is an environmental modification to control the rate of corrosion. Organic compound inhibitors become an environmentally friendly alternative. In this study, research and analysis have been carried out on jackfruit peel extract as a corrosion inhibitor for AISI 1037 carbon steel protection in 1M HCl solution. Variation of inhibitor concentration is 200-3000 ppm. Corrosion rate measurements were performed by applying weight loss and potential polarization methods. The addition of inhibitor concentrations up to 1000 ppm increased the inhibitor efficiency up to 90.98%, but the efficiency decreased at concentrations of 2000 ppm and 3000 ppm. The adsorption inhibitors that occurred in this study was physical adsorption. It followed the Langmuir isothermal adsorption. The fungsional group of the film layer on the carbon steel surface indicated that the jack fruit peel extract compounds was adsorbed on the steel surface.
Effect of cooling rate on microstructure and hardness in gray cast iron casting process Agus Yulianto, Rudy Soenoko, Wahyono Suprapto, As’ad Sonief Acta Metallurgica Slovaca, 2021 This study aims to investigate the thermal conditions of the molds, changes in microstructure and hardness of casting products using sand mold and permanent mold. The use of sand mold and permanent mold results in different cooling rates. Thermal analysis was performed using a thermocouple to obtain a temperature versus time curve. Metallographic observations were carried out using a Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. The Vickers hardness test was carried out in three areas with different thicknesses. The results showed a constant temperature at 691 oC where the eutectoid phase reaction occurred. Testing with sand mold showed that cast iron with flake graphite was finer and spreader than graphite in cast iron produced by permanent mold. Meanwhile, gray cast iron from a casting process with a permanent mold has a higher hardness than gray cast iron from a casting process using a sand mold.
