Revista Brasileira De Educacao Especial, 2011
  • WSPE: A peer-to-peer grid programming environment
Romulo B. Rosinha, Cláudio F. R. Geyer, Patrícia Kayser Vargas
Concurrency and Computation Practice and Experience, 2009
Grid programming environments are tools designed to isolate users from issues such as heterogeneity, scalability and adaptability, thus simplifying the use of a Grid infrastructure. This paper presents work stealing programming environment (WSPE), a Grid programming environment for Grid‐unaware applications. WSPE can be defined as a programming environment, since it is a software tool that presents both a programming model and an execution system. The WSPE consists of a simple programming interface and a fully decentralized runtime system following a peer‐to‐peer organization, both presented in this paper. It's runtime system employs a new scheduling mechanism, known as round stealing, inspired by the idea of work stealing. The main focus of our work is to research on methods to achieve efficient execution of parallel applications in a Grid computing infrastructure. By simulation, we show that our scheduling mechanism outperforms a more traditional mechanism in a Grid environment. We also demonstrate how an appropriate choice for a network overlay mechanism can further improve the execution efficiency. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Cache memory hierarchy contributes positively to system performance. Moreover, tuning cache architectures in platforms for embedded applications can dramatically reduce energy consumption. This paper presents an automated method for adjusting two-level cache memory hierarchy intended for data caches in order to reduce energy consumption and improve the performance of embedded applications. We propose an automated mechanism called TEMGA (Two-level cache Exploration Mechanism based on Genetic Algorithm), to determine the suitable cache hierarchy configuration by exploring a small part of search space. In our experiments, we applied the proposed mechanism to 12 different benchmarks from the MiBench suite. The results show an average reduction of about 15% in the energy consumption for data caches when compared to existing heuristics and a reduction of 5 times in the number of cycles needed to execute applications from Mibench Benchmark suite.

One of the challenges in Grid computing research is to provide a means to automatically submit, manage, and monitor applications whose main characteristic is to be composed of a large number of tasks. The large number of explicit tasks, generally placed on a centralized job queue, can cause several problems: (1) they can quickly exhaust the memory of the submission machine; (2) they can deteriorate the response time of the submission machine due to these demanding too many open ports to manage remote execution of each of the tasks; (3) they may cause network traffic congestion if all tasks try to transfer input and/or output files across the network at the same time; (4) they make it impossible for the user to follow execution progress without an automatic tool or interface; (5) they may depend on fault‐tolerance mechanisms implemented at application level to ensure that all tasks terminate successfully. In this work we present and validate a novel architectural model, GRAND (Grid Robust ApplicatioN Deployment), whose main objective is to deal with the submission of a large numbers of tasks. 2005 IEEE International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid Ccgrid 2005, 2005
Grid environments are ideal for executing applications that require a huge amount of computational work, both due to the big number of tasks to execute and to the large amount of data to be analysed. Unfortunately, current tools may require that users deal themselves with corrupted outputs or early termination of tasks. This becomes inconvenient as the number of parallel runs grows to easily exceed the thousands. ReGS is a user-level software designed to provide automatic detection and restart of corrupted or early terminated tasks. ReGS uses a Web interface to allow the setup and control of grid execution, and provides automatic input data setup. ReGS allows the automatic detection of job dependencies, through the GRID-ADL task management language. Our results show that besides automatically and effectively managing a huge number of tasks in grid environments, ReGS is also a good monitoring tool to spot grid nodes pitfalls.
  • Hierarchical submission in a Grid environment

One of the challenges in grid computing research is to pro-vide means to automatically submit, manage, and moni-tor applications which spread a large number of tasks. The usual way of managing these tasks is to represent each one as an explicit node in a graph, and this is the approach taken by many grid systems up to date. This approach can quickly saturate the machine where the application is launched, as we increase the number of tasks. In this work we present and validate a novel architectural model, GRAND (Grid Ro-bust ApplicatioN Deployment), whose main objective is to deal with the problem of memory and load saturation of the submission machine. GRAND is implemented at a middle-ware level, aiming at providing a distributed task submission through a hierarchical organization. This paper provides an overview of the GRAND submission model as well our im-plementation. Initial results show that our approach can be much more effective than other approaches in the literature.
  • Application partitioning and hierarchical management in grid environments

ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, 2004
Several works on grid computing have been proposed in the last years. However, most of them, including available software, can not deal properly with some issues related to control of applications that spread a very large number of tasks across the grid network. This work presents a step toward solving the problem of controlling such applications. We propose and discuss an architectural model called GRAND (Grid Robust ApplicatioN Deployment) based on partitioning and hierarchical submission and control of such applications. The main contribution of our model is to be able to control the execution of a huge number of distributed tasks while preserving data locality and reducing the load of the submit machines. We propose a taxonomy to classify application models to run in grid environments and partitioning methods. We also present our application description language GRID-ADL.
  • Applying scheduling by edge reversal to constraint partitioning

Proceedings Symposium on Computer Architecture and High Performance Computing, 2003
Scheduling by edge reversal (SER) is a fully distributed scheduling mechanism based on the manipulation of acyclic orientations of a graph. This work uses SER to perform constraint partitioning of constraint satisfaction problems (CSP). In order to apply the SER mechanism, the graph representing the constraints must receive an acyclic orientation. Since obtaining an optimal acyclic orientation is an NP-hard problem, we study three nondeterministic strategies known in the literature: Alg-Neigh, Alg-Edges, and Alg-Colour. We implemented the three algorithms and the SER scheduling mechanism, applying them to the CSP constraint networks generated from 3 applications. Our results show that SER has a great potential to perform a good partitioning of the constraint graphs.
