Exploring the Concept of Inequality Through the Lens of Concept Image Students Mathematics Teaching Research Journal, 2026
Integrating Assessment for Learning with Differentiated Instruction to Foster Students’ Mathematical Resilience Ade Evi Fatimah, Muhammad Daut Siagian, Azrina Purba Open Education Studies, 2026 Mathematical resilience is crucial for students’ academic success, yet many teaching methodologies overlook the anxiety and negative attitudes frequently associated with learning mathematics. This study examines the impact of integrating Assessment for Learning (AfL) and Differentiated Instruction (DI) on fostering mathematical resilience among elementary students. A quasi-experimental design was employed with 70 fifth graders divided into an experimental group ( n = 35) and a control group ( n = 35). The experimental group received mathematics instruction through a structured four-phase AfL-DI framework, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Mathematical resilience was assessed through pre- and post-tests, and data were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Results indicated a statistically significant and statistically significant and large intervention effect on post-test scores after adjusting for pre-test scores, F (1, 67) = 236.63, p < 0.001, with a very large effect size (partial η 2 = 0.779). Students in the experimental group exhibited higher resilience (M_post = 79.20) compared to the control group (M_post = 63.31). The non-significant pre-test covariate (p = 0.582) suggests inclusivity across different initial levels. These findings underscore the AfL-DI model as an effective and equitable pedagogical approach for cultivating mathematical resilience and fostering supportive learning environments.

Improving Students' Mathematical Problem-Solving Ability Using Differentiated Instruction Approach Ade Evi Fatimah, Muhammad Daut Siagian, Suwanto, Fitry Wahyuni, Azrina Purba Aip Conference Proceedings, 2022 Problem-solving abilities are very important in mathematics, not only for those who will study mathematics in the future but also for those who will apply it in other fields of study and in everyday life because in the process of learning and solving it, students can gain experience using knowledge and skills already possessed to be applied in solving non-routine problems. This study aims to analyze and describe students' mathematical problem-solving abilities through the application of the Differentiated Instruction approach. This research is quantitative research with a quasi-experimental method. This research was conducted in one of the Vocational High Schools in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, for grade 10 students consisting of two classes, namely the control class and the experimental class, where each class consisted of 24 students. The sampling technique with cluster random sampling was used to collect data. Data collection is done by giving a test on trigonometry material. Data analysis was performed using a two-way ANOVA test. The results of this study indicate that the increase in mathematical problem-solving abilities of students who receive learning using the Differentiated Instruction approach is better than students who receive direct learning.
The Effectiveness of Worksheets Based on the Scientific Approach to Enhance Critical Thinking Skills Rosliana Siregar, Muhammad Daut Siagian, Tuti Hardianti, Lisa Ariyanti Pohan, Suwanto Aip Conference Proceedings, 2022 A scientific approach is a learning approach that uses scientific steps as a learning reference. The scientific approach aims to improve intellectual abilities, especially pupils' high-level critical thinking skills. This study aims to describe the effectiveness of the scientific approach-based worksheets in improving pupils' critical thinking skills. The method used in this research is research and development using a 4D model. This paper discusses the development stage. The subjects in this study were pupils of class X private high school in Medan, amounting to 32 pupils, the subject was obtained by using the purposive sampling technique. While the object of this research is pupils' critical thinking ability. Data was collected by giving tests, questionnaires, and observations. Furthermore, the data were analyzed descriptively, for the questionnaire data, conversion from ordinal data to interval data was carried out using the Method of Successive Interval (MSI). Based on the results of the study, it is known that the worksheet based on the scientific approach that was developed has an effectiveness category in terms of (1) classical pupil learning completeness; and (2) pupil responses.
Evaluation of online learning for mathematics education students G M A Siregar, Hidayat, Sukmawarti, M D Siagian Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2021 The Covid-19 pandemic has affected most countries in the world, including universities in Medan, Indonesia. The spread of Covid-19 through social interaction requires the omission of face-to-face learning activities. Based on UNESCO data, 850 million students around the world, including Indonesia, study at home. For the mathematics education students in a private university in Medan, Indonesia, studying at home is a new phenomenon. Students and lecturers must change the learning method without preparation due to the sudden pressure. This article examined this phenomenon. The method used was descriptive qualitative to describe the process of implementing distance learning, the media, and evaluation used in e-learning during the Covid-19 pandemic for mathematics education students. Data collection was conducted by a questionnaire administered to 200 lecturers, interviews, and direct observation. The results show that Group Chat via WhatsApp was the most widely used online communication media, especially the Baby Boomers and Generation X, but millennials used online multimedia more frequently. The implementation has several shortcomings: the lack of interaction between instructors and students, students being asked to learn independently and do independent projects, teachers using more than one media not following the teaching-load hours or spending less time, and many experiencing technical obstacles.
Investigating students' concept image in understanding variables M D Siagian, D Suryadi, E Nurlaelah, M Tamur, R Sulastri Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2021 Abstract Concept image is the overall structure associated with a concept, including all mental images and their related properties and processes. The concept image develops continuously through experience and changes as the individual faces stimulation and maturity. This study aims to analyze and describe the concept image of students in understanding the variable concept. This study is qualitative research with a phenomenological method. Data were collected by means of interviews and tests, then analyzed using the content analysis method. Participants involved in this study were ten eighth-grade students, while the object in this study was students’ concept image in understanding the variable concept. The findings revealed that most of the students understood a variable as something whose value is unknown, whilst some other students comprehend a variable as a substitute for something whose value is unknown. Understanding students’ thinking or concept image provides educators with an insight of the learning process aligned with students’ needs as a way to increase their understanding of mathematical concepts.
