Effectiveness of antimicrobial agents to reduce epibiont community in estuarine crab embryos Pedro Slongo, Pablo Damian Borges Guilherme, Josiane Aparecida Gomes-Figueiredo, Ariane Lima Bettim, Murilo Zanetti Marochi Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, 2025 The influence of antimicrobial agents on aquatic fauna has been described in many studies, but few have tested the effects on invertebrate embryos and the associated epibiotic community. The role of epibiotic microorganisms in embryonic development needs to be better understood due to their ecological role and use for aquaculture purposes. Therefore, enabling the removal of the microbiota without affecting embryonic development is the first step to understanding the effects of microbiota on organism development. We tested the impact of two antimicrobial agents, Terramycine (oxytetracycline compound) and Biofor (iodine compound), during the embryonic development of the crab Leptuca thayeri to verify their effectiveness in reducing the microbial load and the impact on embryonic development. The mortality rate, time and rate of embryo hatching, and microbial growth in Petri dishes were evaluated over 30 days of embryonic development under laboratory conditions. Biofor reduced the hatching rate and increased mortality, whereas Terramycin did not differ from the control for both variables. The time in days to hatching was not influenced by contact with Terramycin. Both antimicrobial agents efficiently reduced the microbial load, with greater effectiveness over time for Biofor. The concentrations and exposure time tested for Terramycin were promising in reducing the microbial load without harming the embryos, facilitating future studies. In addition to ecological importance, our results apply to sterilizing live embryos.
Screening of potential biosurfactant-producing yeasts isolated from the mangroves of the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (PEC) Matheus Sampaio Araujo, Caroline Alves Cordeiro, Danyelle Stringari, Josiane Aparecida Gomes-Figueiredo Acta Scientiarum Biological Sciences, 2025 Mangroves have been critical to discovering microbial diversity and for their use in biotechnological resources. The Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (PEC) is surrounded by mangroves that are exposed to anthropogenic actions resulting from industrial and seaport activities. The present study evaluated the molecular diversity of mangrove yeast isolates obtained from the PEC. Furthermore, the ability of these microorganisms to degrade oil was researched using the redox indicator 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol (DCPIP) and dehydrogenase activity assays. Biosurfactant production was screened using the blue agar plate method, drop-collapse test, tilted glass slide test, oil spreading method, and emulsification assay. Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequencing revealed a great diversity of yeast species in the PEC, including Candida sp., C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, Meyerozyma carpophila, M. guilliermondii, and Debaryomyces hansenii. The isolates D. hansenii A2M1(1A), M. carpophila P2M5(74), and Candida sp. P2M3(74) tested positive for DCPIP and dehydrogenase activity. All isolates showed positive results in the blue agar plate method. The isolates M. carpophila A2M3(20), D. hansenii A2M3(15), C. tropicalis A2C5(2), C. parapsilosis A2C5, and M. carpophila P2M3(42) indicated activity in the tilted glass slide test. The isolates C. tropicalis A2C5(2), M. carpophila P2M3(42), and M. carpophila P2M5(74) showed activity in the emulsification assay. These findings provide important information about the composition of yeasts in the PEC mangrove, highlighting their potential for application in bioremediation processes of environments contaminated by petroleum.

Bioprospecting highly diverse endophytic Pestalotiopsis spp. with antibacterial properties from Maytenus ilicifolia, a medicinal plant from Brazil Josiane Gomes-Figueiredo, Ida C. Pimentel, Vânia A. Vicente, Marcio R. Pie, Vanessa Kava-Cordeiro, Lygia Galli-Terasawa, José O. Pereira, Antonia Q.L. de Souza, Chirlei Glienke Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 2007 Thirteen endophytic fungal strains of the genus Pestalotiopsis were isolated from the medicinal plant Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. ex. Reiss (commonly known as “espinheira santa”) and their antimicrobial properties were investigated. Two isolates were successful in inhibiting the growth of the tested microorganisms ( Escherichia coli , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Micrococcus luteus , Staphylococcus aureus , and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) using the technique of bioautographic thin-layer chromatography (TLC) agar overlay assay. An analysis based on a polyphasic approach integrating taxonomic information, morphological traits, RAPD markers, and the sequencing of the ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 of the rDNA led to the assignment of the isolates as belonging to the species Pestalotiopsis microspora , Pestalotiopsis vismiae , and Pestalotiopsis leucothoes . Therefore, the present study presents a new approach to the study of endophytic fungi of the genus Pestalotiopsis.
