Thermodynamic approaches for integrating power generation and thermochemical energy storage with a novel solar-ORC system Arif Karabuga, Behiye Yuksel, Devrim Aydin, Zafer Utlu, Saffa Riffat Thermal Science and Engineering Progress, 2026 In the present study, a solar-driven Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) integrated with thermochemical energy storage (TCES) is investigated for flexible heat and power generation. An evacuated tube solar collector (ETSC) is employed to harness solar energy. Electricity generation is achieved through the ORC using R134a as the working fluid. The TCES system is used to store part of the gained solar energy to meet the peak heating demands. A novel heat recuperation method is applied in the system to recover the waste heat of TCES charging exhaust air to preheat the R134A prior to entering the evaporator. In the TCES system, CaCl2 impregnated Pumice is used as the composite sorbent. The analysis of the integrated system is performed based on the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics. Accordingly, energetic and exergetic efficiencies of the ORC, TCES, and whole system are evaluated under different operating conditions. Within the analyses, the TCES performance is evaluated independently for the charging and discharging processes. The exergy efficiency of the TCES unit is calculated as 2.66% during the charging phase and 4.19% during the discharging phase. Additionally, the exergy efficiency of the ORC and the whole system are obtained as 7.16% and 5.67%, respectively.
Thermodynamic assessment of power generation from waste heat in natural gas compressor station: A case study Arif Karabuga, Murat Iskender, Behiye Yuksel, Elif Sultan Aydin, Zafer Utlu, Ferhat Eti International Journal of Thermofluids, 2025 • Waste heat supported power generation system was discussed. • The recovery of waste heat in a natural gas compression unit was examined in detail. • The exergy efficiency of the whole system was calculated as 23.27%. • The power generation was calculated as 3838 kW. This study presents a comprehensive thermodynamic and economic assessment of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system for waste heat recovery in natural gas compressor stations. The research systematically evaluates the impact of critical thermodynamic parameters, including turbine inlet temperature, pressure, working fluid flow rate, and exhaust gas temperature, on both energy and exergy efficiencies. The findings, system energy and exergy efficiencies increase by 22.52% and 22.41%, respectively. Additionally, an economic analysis was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of the system. The results indicate that higher turbine inlet temperatures contribute to lower LCOE, improving cost-effectiveness, while also enhancing sustainability through increased exergy efficiency. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was performed using the Theil-Sen Robust Estimator, confirming that the system remains operationally stable across reasonable fluctuations in key parameters. These findings highlight ORC technology as an effective and sustainable solution for waste heat recovery, offering both economic and environmental benefits in industrial applications.
Assessment of carbon trading within blockchain and subfield of artificial intelligence: a review Sofya Morozova, Arif Karabuğa, Zafer Utlu International Journal of Global Warming, 2025 How can blockchain and AI revolutionise carbon trading? This article explores this question by reviewing the literature on blockchain's potential to create smart contracts for carbon trading. It also illustrates step-by-step guidance to write a smart contract that covers the essential aspects of the market. It is suggested that blockchain technology can address some shortcomings of the current system while usage of the data provided by ML makes contract actually smart.
