The revival of tribes: An analysis of Platystomatidae (Diptera, Tephritoidea) phylogeny based on external morphological traits João Paulo Vinicios Rodrigues, Ramon Luciano Mello, Claudio José Barros de Carvalho Systematic Entomology, 2026 In this study, we present the first phylogenetic hypothesis for Platystomatidae based on morphological evidence. The matrix consisted of 194 characters, 129 terminals, five outgroups and 124 ingroups. Based on this dataset, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis using a traditional search with the Tree Bisection and Reconnection (TBR) algorithm under implied weighting with k = 27. A tree with a length of 2437, a consistency index of 12 and a retention index of 45 were recorded. The family was recovered with three synapomorphies, and four subfamilies were identified. Trapherinae was recovered with two tribes: Trapherini and Xirini. Plastotephritinae included two tribes: Agrochirini and Plastotephritini. Scholastinae was recovered with one tribe: Scholastini. Lastly, Platystomatinae was recovered with six tribes: (Rivelini (Cleitamiini (Senopterini (Achiini, Platystomatini)))). In addition, a classification is proposed upon the hypotheses obtained, and a new genus and new species, of Trapherinae, are described: Trapheroplatystoma Rodrigues, Carvalho & Mello gen. nov., T. cabila Rodrigues, Carvalho & Mello sp. nov. Additionally, an updated key to the genera of Trapherinae is presented. Lectotype male and one paralectotype male are herein designated to the species Eopiara chrysoptera Frey, 1964.
A catalog of the Milichiidae of Chile (Diptera: Carnoidea) LUIS M. OSORIO, JOAN S. ÁVILA POLO, ANDRES F. SABBATINO, LEINER A. SUÁREZ MARTÍNEZ Zootaxa, 2025 The previously monotypic genus Aenigmarachne Schmidt, 2005, known only from a single male specimen collected presumably in Isla el Coco, Costa Rica, is reported here for the first time in Colombia, with the description of a new species based on male and female specimens. Thus, we expand the known geographic range of the genus and enhance our understanding of Theraphosinae diversity in northern South America and Colombia. Additionally, we provide detailed observations on the urticating setae in the species and discuss aspects of its natural history.
Phylogeny and taxonomy of the Australasian Zygaenula Doleschall, 1858 (Diptera: Platystomatidae) with a description of a new species João Paulo Vinicios Rodrigues, Ramon Luciano Mello, Claudio José Barros de Carvalho Austral Entomology, 2025 Zygaenula Doleschall, 1858 and Mesoctenia Enderlein, 1924 syn. nov. are small genera restricted to the Australasia region. Here, both genera are considered synonymous, supported by the synapomorphy width of frons, in relation to height, more than two times. A new species, Zygaenula mcalpinei sp. nov. is described from the Manu Island, Admiralty Archipelago, Papua New Guinea. Zygaenula australis (McAlpine, 1973) comb. nov. , Z. celyphoides (Walker, 1859) comb. nov. , Z. coalescens Hendel, 1914 comb. reinstat., Z. hilaris Hendel, 1914 comb. reinstat., and Z. paradoxa Doleschall, 1858 are redescribed. The lectotype and paralectotype are designated for specimens of Z. celyphoides comb. nov. In addition, an updated identification key and a distribution map are presented. The hypothesised phylogenetic relationship of the Zygaenula species is represented by the following parenthetical notation: ( Z . paradoxa ( Z. coalescens comb. reinstat.. ( Z . hilaris comb. reinstat. ( Z . mcalpinei sp. nov . ( Z. australis comb. nov . and Z . celyphoides comb. nov .))))).

It presents the first checklist of Diptera from EBB, based on literature and museum specimens. Currently, 721 species, belonging to 312 genera and 57 families, are known from EBB, including 193 species described from the area. These numbers are likely underestimated, as they are based on multiple short-term studies; to date, no comprehensive, long-term inventory specifically targeting Diptera has been conducted in the area. Among the species examined, 56 are new records for the state of São Paulo and 13 for Brazil. The three most species-rich families are Mycetophilidae, Drosophilidae, and Muscidae, while the three most diverse in the number of genera are Tachinidae, Asilidae, and Muscidae. These findings reinforce EBB’s role as a Diptera biodiversity hotspot and highlight the need for expanded research infrastructure and taxonomic expertise across Brazilian biomes. This checklist provides a foundation for future research in taxonomy, biogeography, and evolution.
Catalog of the Ulidiidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea) of Chile RAMON LUCIANO MELLO, CHRISTIAN R. GONZÁLEZ, MARIO ELGUETA, ALEXSSANDRO CAMARGO, RODRIGO M. First record of Pyrgotidae (Diptera, Tephritoidea) from Uruguay with two new synonyms in the genus Leptopyrgota Hendel Ramon Luciano Mello Papeis Avulsos De Zoologia, 2024 Pyrgotidae are a small family of Tephritoidea of worldwide distribution, whose larvae are known to be endoparasites in the abdomen of adult Scarabaeidae beetles. This study presents the first record of the family from Uruguay, represented by the Leptopyrgota albitarsis Aczél, 1956 from Treinta y Tres, Quebrada de los Cuervos. Based on the study of holotypes, the following synonymy is proposed: Leptopyrgota albitarsis Aczél, 1956 = Leptopyrgota definienda Bernardi, 1991, new synonym and L. liae Bernardi, 1991 new synonym. Photos of the holotypes of the three studied species are presented, for the first time.
A phylogeny of Carrerapyrgota Aczél (Diptera, Pyrgotidae) Maria Leidiane Alves Cordeiro, Ramon Luciano Mello Papeis Avulsos De Zoologia, 2024 Carrerapyrgota Aczél, 1956 is a Neotropical Diptera genus within Pyrgotidae. Currently, the genus comprise four species: C. miliaria Aczél, 1956 (type species), C. personata (Lutz & Lima, 1918), C. aczeli Mello, Lamas & Rafael, 2010, and C. bernardii Mello, Lamas & Rafael, 2010. This study investigates the phylogenetic relationships among Carrerapyrgota species, aiming to establish their monophyly as a genus. To achieve this, we conducted phylogenetic analyses based on 22 external morphological characters of adults, emploing the principle of parsimony. Analyses using both equal and implied character weighting support the monophyly of the genus, based on the following apomorphies: absence of the postscutellum, R₂₊₃ with spurious apical vein, lower calypter with a longitudinal row of bristles, and the presence of a posterior longitudinal groove on the female fore femur. The species C. aczeli, C. bernardii, and C. miliaria form a monophyletic group, supported by the synapomorphic condition of a spot on the forehead. Within this group, C. bernardii and C. miliaria are sister species, sharing the synapomorphic condition of a less sclerotized M vein, after dm-cu compared to the anterior region, as well as the homoplastic condition of a spot on the median occipital sclerite. This phylogenetic analysis reaffirms the synonymy proposed by Bernardi (1990), which treats Anapyrgota Steyskal, 1967, as a junior synonym of Carrerapyrgota. The evolutionary relationship among the species of the genus is represented as (C. personata (C. aczeli (C. bernardii, C. miliaria))). Furthermore, this study includes an updated distributional map for the genus, featuring the first record of Pyrgotinae in the Andean region.

Leite Zoologia, 2024 The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil ( CTFB ) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606
